TUESDAY, Edward Locke, one of the oidest and most popular passenger conductors running into Omaha, was severely injur yesterday morning and as the result of the accident had his left leg amputated at the kne Mr. Locke w in charge of the Missourl Pacific passenger train which left Omaha Sunday night enroute for Kansas City At Unlon, where the train arrives at 12:05 midnight, considerable switching is neces sary owing to the cutting out of the Lin coln coach. Ordinarily the conductor has little to do with the switching, but yester. day morning Mr. Locke relleved his brake man of some of his duties and in doing so suffered the accident that proved so dis astrous, The tracks were slippery with snow and while attempting to board the train when it was moving Mr. ke missed his foot ing and fell on the rails. The train passed over his body and so mangled the lower ¢ tremities of his left % that it had be amputated. His right leg crushed and a portion of the foot had to be amputated. The train was held at Union until the surgeon’'s work was completed and then Mr. Locke was taken to his home in Kansas City, Telegraphic reports re- celved from Kansas City are to the effect that Mr. Locke might be unable to recover from the severe shock, as his condition now 1s somewhat eritical.
