Washington; master of exchequer, W. M Word was received in the city yesterday that & case of smallpox had been discovered at Weston, which is about nine miles from Council Bluffs, The afflicted person 18 sald to be & stockman named Tom Rob- orts, whose home is at Alllance, Neb. Roberts a few days ago brought in a shipment of horses aud was taken sick at the home of Henry Scott, a well known farmer Iiving about two miles north of | ..y~ ‘Tne first town to be connected Weston. He was treated for chickenpox, but word recelved from there yesterday indicated that the attending physiclan had doctded that it was & fully developed case of smallpox. What steps, it any, have been taken to quarantine Roberts and the Scott residence is not known here. Unless & fresh case of smallpox should develop at the Woman's Christian associa- tlon hospital, the quarantine on that in- stitution will be ralsed Wednesday of this week, the soventeen days that the law re- quires the place shall be under quarantine expiring that day. Senter's Case Comes Up. In the district court this morning Judge Green will take up the criminal calendar, the first case on the docket for trial being that of the State against Thomas R. Senter, the Mewnphis (Mo, man charged, under the name of James L. Palmer, with ob- tajning a loan of $640 from Lougee & Lougee of this city in October, 1595, on a forged farm deed. There are two indict- ments against Senter, the first for obtain- ing money under false pretenses and the second for uttering a forged instrument. It fs understood that his defense will be an alibi and that he will attempt to prove that he was fn Memphls at the time he 18 charged with operating here. His attorney, Thomas H. Wagner of Memphis, arrived yesterday to assist J. J. Stewart of this city n the defense. John B. Mudd, sald to be a witness for the defense, also ar- rived from Memphis yesterday. Death of Allen M. Spoor. J. W. Bpoor received u telegram yester- day afternoon announcing the death of his with Des Molnes by electric line was Valley Junction, six miles out on the Rock Island. The city street cars carry pasiengers to Velley Juuction for a fare of & cents from the city limits. The line is very successtul, as Valley Junction has grown Into a considerable city. The Street Rallway company has caused to be sur- veyed in the direction of Winterset, in Madison county, another line, which is virtually an extension of the Valley Junc- tion line, crossing the Coon river near Commerco and turning southward into Mad- ison county. The route is feasable and when it fs buflt will greatly shorten the rall dista between Winterset and Des Moines. Tho owners of the city lines also an- nounce that within a short time they will lay out a line to the site of the proposed United States army post, south of the city. It 1s now deemed by Des Molnes men prac- tically certain this post will be estab- lished, as it orly remains for General Otls and two other army officers to approve the ground offered. One or two lines of rall- road will be bult to the site of the post and the city street car lines will be ex- tended to the site. But the electric cars will not stop at the post. A line has been planned running south through a well-settled frult-growing country to Som- erset, in Warren county, and on to In- dianola. Such a line would also bring many farmers foto closer touch with Des Mofnes and it is reasonably certain it will be bullt. Jones and May of Cleveland, the engineer and busines: agent respectively of the Cleveland Inter- urban Raflway company, were in Lies Moines the past week looking oven ghe plans. The company will ask a franchi#e over one street of Des Moines to the business center from the eastern city limits and may build termi- nals a part of the way. Franchizes will also be asked through Altoona, Mitchel- ville, Colfax and Newton. It is estimated | that the greatest business of this line will be with Colfax. The Colax springs has not been patronized as well by Des Molnes peo- ple as by those from a distance becauso of the diffculty of going there and back again. It s expected that the electric line will make a rate of 25 cents each way be- tween Des Moines and Colfax and as there will be many trains a day Colfax will be- come practically a Des Moines suburb, State College Loas. News of the burning of the college bufld- ing of tho lowa State college at Ames was heerd with regret by the hundreds of tormer students of the college in central Iowa. The name of the college was for many years the Iowa State Agricultural college, but has been changed to lowa State college, as #ts scope has been broad- ened. Although there are fifteen buildings on the campus devoted exclusively to col- lege work and these cost more than $500,000, the collego trustees have been considering for soveral years the advisability of ask- ing for an appropriation to build a fine new colleglate building. There has been no strictly collegiate bullding, as the one destroyed was used both as a dormitory and a college bullding. Prof. Stanton, who entered the college as a student In 1873 and has been an instructor since his grad- uation, says it has been the design of the board of trustees, of which he is secrefary, to abolish the dormitory system so far as possible. In view of these facts it fs ex. pected the trustees will ask that the build- ing to be erected on the site of the present ruin will be an entirely mew colleglate bullding, to be devoted entirely to class rooms, offices, instruments, museum, etc. There {8 a considerable town growing up outside of the campus, where students can secure rooms.
