Simpson of West Virginia, who recently arrived in San Franclsco from South America, Is on his way home after an experience that few men would care to undergo, he having crossed the Andos mountains on foot in dead of winter, facing perils of wild elements and wilder In- babitants of the country. The story of the trip, as told by Simpson in the San Francisco Chronicle, s romantlo those usually found in books where fiction s combined with travel, but the appear- ance of the narrator, his calloused hands and worn face, bear mute witness to the hardships that were undergone during that terrible journey. Stmpson started from his West Virginia home with the determination of seeing as much of the world as possible and salled for England, whence he took ship for Buenos Ayres, expecting to make an easy excursion across the continent to Chill and home by the way of the Pacific ocean to San Francisco. He did not make caleul tion, however, for many things unforeseen and his easy excursion developed into a weary tramp over mountains through fce and snow for many tiresome days and nights, sometimes suffering from thirst and often hungry and cold. It was a tour of comfortable traveling and pleasant sight- seeing until the little city of Mendoza, nestling at the foot of the Andes, wi reached, but from thereon It was al most a struggle for existence until the waters of the blue Pacific cheered his tired eyes and the soft beds of Valparaiso gave rest to his exhausted body. The ntory of the trip over the mountalns is best told In Simpson’s own words: “I was accompanied by a young man who had deserted his ship at Buenos Ayres,”” sald Stmpson, “and who wanted to reach the Pacific. His name was George ‘Temple, and as he was without means I helped him along and pald his expenses in order to have company. We made the mis- tako of attempting to cfoss the mountalns after the passes were closed and were ad- vised at Mendoza not to try it, but as our money was limited and we could not go back over the 1,000 miles of plains to Buenos Ayres we determined to do the best we could and get to Valparalso it possible. Weo were well armed with re- volvers and knives and did not fear any trouble with either natives or wild ani- mals. We were compelled to leave my big trunk at Mendoza and started out with my handbag filled with food and with a canvas bag holding our clothing. 1 car- ried my umbrella that I had kept ever since leaving home, and this served many & cold night to protect us from the plercing wind which sweeps across the mountains. We started over the foothills, expecting to reach the Mendoza river in a short time. We carried a leather bottle full of water, but it was emptied long before we reached the top of the mountaln, and we wero compelled to return to Mendoza for a new supply. We then concluded to follow the line of the rallroad along the river and started out bravely enough. The first night out we met our first experience in hard- ship and were compelled to sleep under o water tank. We carried a supply of ool and it was woll that we did, for there was no possibllity of obtaining any. We met scarcely anyone we traveled, and when we tried to get food we were charged most exorbitant prices. The second night out we reached a little cabin occupled by an old Frenchman and his wife. They were glad to see anyone from Europe and tried to entertain us, but as we could not under- stand them mor they us it was a difficult matter. The old man showed us the skins of many wild animals that he bad killed, and made us a bed on'the floor out of the furs. Next morning we started without breakfast and walked all that day and far into the night. We stopped at a place kept by an Irishman, who would not give us supper, bed and breakfast for less than $25 each. We could not afford that and trudged on until we were so worn that wo could scarcely drag one foot after thé other. ““We supposed that we would always be close to water, but we found that the trall led 80 high on the mountain that the river was thousands of feet below us and we often suffered from thirst. While hunting for water we were passed by two of the worst looking Indians I have ever seen. They evi- dently thought we would make good gam and during the day they passed and re- passed us, evidently sizing us up. I feared an attack and told Tomple to get ready next time and bave his revolver out where they could see it. When they saw our revolvers they hurried away and we did not see them again. ““We reached a town that looked es if we could get accommodation, and we asked a priest where we could get something hot for bre but the man wanted §7.560 each for breakf: 1told the priest that we were almost broke and could not afford that much fora meal. He argued with the landlord and finally suc- ceeded {n getting breakfast for us for ach. It was a good breakfast and we did full justice to it. We had mow been five days and were at the foot of the last elimb to the divide of the Andes. The priest ad- vised not to attempt to climb until we bad remained in the town for several days snd got thoroughly rested. We told him that at $5 a meal we preferred traveling and started for the summit. “The climb was something fearful, and after about three hours’ walking we reached bheavy snow and had to fight our way through it to the summit. At the top, which we reached late in the afternoon, we found that the wind had blown all the snow away and lefc the bare rock. Here we found the big signboard marking the dividing line be- tween Argentine and Chill. It was cold up on that plateau and we started down the other side, expecting am easy time, but found that it was worse than climbing up, for the snow was 80 bad that we were con- stantly slipping and were in danger of fall- ing ioto deep gulches. How we ever got down I camnot tell, but we made our way and as darkoess came on we found a place where there was a slight shelter. I took my umbrella and fastened it down with stones, and we tried to sleep under its shebs ter, but it was cold and the wind blew so that we were thoroughly benumbed and could scarcely move next morning. We worked our way down, however, and finally reached a cable station, where there was an Englishman. He invited us into his hous and gave us refreshments and a bath and offered to get us a pass on the rallroad to Valparaiso, but we told bim we lntended to get there on our own account and started on. We were now over the bad part of the trip and found little difficulty in getting to the coast. I sold our revolvers and found that we could get along unttl tho first steamer went to S8an Francisco.
