On Tuesday there was a hearing on & motion by Figg’s attorney to set aside the judgement and give leave to file an answer, The court held that Figg had been negligent and he should haye attended to the suit, he overruled the motion. In consequ the sheriff proceeded to levy against Figg's property to satisty the judgment. Figg and his followers say they are anxtous to get away from Gretna and live in a com- munity where they will not be annoyed by non-believers in their creeds. For the first time in the history of the trade the greater rart of these goods are direct importations. In previous years the Omaha tradd depended upon the curio deal- ers of the tern ‘states for their supply of Orlental goods. This year Chimewe and Japanese goods nearly all come by the way of Ban Francisco and Seattle. The opening up of the Asiatic trade is revolu- tlonizing the raliroad business of the coun- try and rallroad men of all sections look upon a change in the transcontinental busi- nl a8 inevitable. Ocean freights are cheaper than railroad freights, but the American people are will- ing to save time at an increas expendl- ture of money and for this reasen the bulk of the {mportations from Asia will come by the way of Pacific ports. As this trad increases the freight movement over trans continental lines will show an fincrease from the west to the east, untl, according to the ideas of many conservative people, the eastern movement will be in excess of that toward the west. The opening up of trade from the Orient through the gateway of Manila promises to make the transcontinental lim steady dividend payers and place them on a par with the eastern trunk lines, which have for years paid the cost of hauling trains in both directions. The Northern Pacific rail- road is the first one to take active s eps to handle this trade. On Monday it pur- chased fifty acres of ground at Tacoma, Wash.,, upon which it proposes to spend $1,000,000 in the erection of warehouses and terminal facilities for the handling of Asiatic freight.
