Tha In a recent number of the Journal of Education superintendents of the public schools In various cities make statements concerning the commercial departments in thelr high echools. Only one superin- tendent, Aaron Gove of the Denver schools, opposes commercial education in city schools and his attendance report, showing that only 2 per ceat of Denver High school puplls take a business course, Indicates that there has been no attempt to popular- 1ze the work. Superintendent Pearse's report on the Omaha commercial department shows that one-sixth of the Omaha High school puplls aro taking commercial work. When the courses are compared It s apparent that the Omaha schools offer a more compre- Lensive business training than any other bigh school in the United States which answered the inquiries of the Journal of Education. Omaba is the only city which requires four sears of training in a modern language and attempts to give students such instruction in German or Spanish that they may be fitted for positions in foreign countries Fred C. Ball of the Bangor, Me., schools reports that one-third of his High school pupils bave commercinl work. This is the largest percentage shown by any city. Providence, R. i, cor.es second with 29 por cent and many of the schools show a higher percentago than Omaha. Mr. Pearse ac- counts for this, however, by the fact that Omaha hae a fully equipped department this year for the first time. Detailed reports of the meeting now in the hands executive officials of roads inter- ested show that of the 582 changes in ex~ Istiug rates and classifications proposed only about forty were accomplished. In nearly every nstance the chapges recom- mended which received favorable action were in the nature of concessions to the shippers, classifications on certain articles being to changed as to give the shippers | the beuefit of lower rates. One of the most important changes made in its relation to the jobbing Interests of Omuha and to the agriculturists of the state as well was that affecting the rate on agricultaral implements, vehicles and parts of vehicles returned by the owner to the manufacturer or jobber for repairs. At the present time the tariff for such shipments 18 one class lower than the rate on the shipment of the new article. It was decided at the Mot Springs meeting to reduce the rate on shipments of this kind to one-half the tarift applied on the origl- nal shipment.
