CANNOT VOTE ON BOND PROPOSITION Members Clause in Statate Anent R tration Does Not Apply 10 Women in the City | of Omaha. 1u the opinion of City Attorney W. J. Con- nell women who desire to vote for members of the Board of Education at the coming election need not register. In fact, Mr. C rell holds that women cannot register le- gally In a city of the metropolitan class be- cause tho sections of the code which set forth the school laws for metropolitan cities provide that women are entitled to a vote | for members ol the Board of Education after swearing that thoy are 21 years of age, that | they have been in the distriot forty days and that they eliher pay taxes or have chil- ren of school uge. The law specifically states that women shall vote only for mem-« bers of the school board and Mr. Connelt | says that they cannot bo permitted to vo! on the High school boud proposition to be submitted at the coming election Contusion concerning the registration of women was brought about by an amendment 10 section No. 4 under subdivision No. 2 of the school laws of Nebraska. This section | applies, in the opinion of the city attorney, to school districts other than those in met- ropolitan cities. The amendment is as for- lows: “All electors in school elections in cities whero reglstration of voters is re- quired shall comply with the provisions of such reglstration law before they shall be entitled to vote." Although Mr. Connell admits that the author of this amendment may bave in- tended that it should require the registra« tion of women votbrs in Omaha he says thae it does not apply to Omaha because it 18 noe included under the subdivision prepared es« pectally for the regulation of school elece | tions in clties of more than 100,000 populae tion. AL the last school election this same quess tion was in dispute and there were many arguments presented on both sides. The re« sult of the agitation was that all women who were entitled to a vote exercised the fran- chise regardless of registration. Mr. Con- nell expressed at that time the same opinion which he holds now and says that many at- torneys who formerly contended for the reg- istration of women now accept his interpre- tatlon of the law and agree that the amend- ment was not made to the right subdivision of the school law to be effective in Omaha A Thousand Tongues. Could not express the rapture of Annle . Springer of Philadelphia when Dr. King's New Discovery cured her of a hackin, cough that for many years had made life a burden. She says: ‘“‘After all other rem- edles and doctors falled it soon removed the pain in my chest and 1 can now sleep soundly, something I can scarcely remem- ber doing before. I feel like sounding its pralses throughout the universe.” Dr. King's New Discovery is guaranteed to cure all troubles of the throat, chest or lungs. Price, 50c and $1.00. WANT CARS TO FORT OMAHA te Men Will Ask Company ve Service to that Point. neral Miles stated, while on a visit to this city, that old Fort Omaba is too valuable a property to stand idle and should be utilized by the government for military purposes. He stated that its value would be enhanced and the probability of its use by the government would be fin- creased if there were direct street car con- nections between Omaha and the old fort, At yesterday's meeting of the Real Estate exchango this matter was taken up and, act- ing upon the suggestion of General Miles, a resolution was introduced and passed unanimously asking the street car company to run its cars through to Fort Omaha. Johw Gallup, a real estate man from Den- ver, was a visitor at the exchange's meet- ing and delivered an interesting address on the topic of real estate. He compared the sitiuation existing in Denver and Omaha at the present time and expressed it as his opinion, formed after inquiring into ths conditions of both cities, that the two cities are much alike in regard to real estate uftairs.
