COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Bull sh Bontiment Was Braced Up by Higher Oables, CORN WAS DULL, FOLLOWING WHEAT Provistons Opencd Fism and Higher than Thursday's Closing Prices Kept Gaining in Strength Hourly. CHICAGO, Sept. 27.—The bullish senti ment of the local wheat traders of the | market was braced up by higher eables and northwestern receipts today, and December closed e higher; May corn lost Yc and May oats %c, but provisions closed at sharp advanc Wheat ruled nervous and irregular, There was nothing sensational fn the way of news and the course of prices was governed largely by the momentary changes in loc sentiment. The Board of Trade cables w higher, and the deliveries in the northwest seventy-five cars smaller than a year ago. There was a very nervous fecling at the start, with shorts anxiously endeavoring to cover, while there was little wheat for sale, and some of the carly transactions were at %e advance on the close last night But Baldwin & Farnum appeared to be free seilers, and many brokers supposed to be acting for Cudahy also had plenty for sale, and the action of these big leaders caused immediate weakness, A dispatch from Liverpool was very bearish in tone and helped to keep the market on the down grade for a time. But the bull senti ment was too strong to be successfully resisted, and the market soon began to re- act on liberal purchases on the break. The crowd was finally Inclined to give mc heed to the public advices quoting higher prices in Liverpool, and under good buying there was a rally’ of 7c, but it was not held, The reports of retarded seeding of winter wheat by droutii, both in this coun try and in France, is attracting more and more attention, and is getting to be quite a bull factor. December opened with few trades as high as 6l%c, but with little business over 6lle, fell irregularly to 60%e, up to 6lle, off to 60lge, and closed at 6ite. « was dull, following wheat in a list- Jess and weary fashion, The closing bulge in wheat, however, failed to carry prices up to last night's closing level. May opened higher, at 29%c, sold to e, and closed i e at 29t Onts followed corn, and were even m uninteresting than that_tired market. G. Dun & Co's Weekly Review of Trade says: Th speculation In cotton has lifted the price e during the past week, and quotations here are some higher than at Liverpool, so that free exports cannot be expected. It scems no longer possible to hope for a ®ood crop, and Neill Bros. have issued a clreular predicting a yield of only 7000000 bales. The accounts of in jury and loss grow more dismal each week, and while they may be somewhat werated, the general outlook 1s decidedly unfavorable. But for the ex traordinary supplies carried over from last year, the manufacturers would be in trouble. But prices of goods rise each week, ding to the profit of the mills, which, on Loth sides of the ocean, can use for some time to come old cotton bought at low prices. It Is not yet clear how the con sumption will support the manufacture at the present rate and at the present prices for goods, and the 1 goods s not particularly good, whil price is constantly rising. There is some chance for strike in Fall River mills, though the rise in prices will make it easler for the milla to grant some advance in wage The wheat market hus been excited with out much discoverable roason, and the price has advatced over 5 cents for spot and 2t cents for December deliveries. Tt may be said that crop prospects abroad are not quite as favorable as they were a month ago, and with a short supply at best in this country the market 18 lable to be unusually short. Western receipts for the week have been S bushels, ag 5432250 last year, for the mic 303,25 bushels, against 21,923,881 busl vear. The exports from Atlantic ports flour_included, have been 1857001 bushel for the week, against 240 pushels Tast year, and for the past ks 7,524 bushels, ageinst 8472318 bushels last’ yea Holders of corn decli ave judiciously to “sympathize’” with wheat to a great ex tent, and the price is practically unchanged Pork and hog products are all somewhat lower. Nothing is clear ahout the iron and stecl manufacture, but some of the largest Pittsburg concerns, professing to have or ders for many months ahead, bidding for small contracts in easterh markets at $1 1o $1.50 per ton less than auoted rate. Some say that it is done to depress the market, and, again, it is thought that the object ‘may ' be to buy material, but racts have been made at the east fou tons of foreign ore, to be used ir bessemer iron making at eastern furnaces and the termination of the Marquette strike sets free about half a lion tons more bessemer ore within the perlod of lak: There {5 _also a halt in the of leather. No higher prices have been recorded this week, though hides are on the whole a shade stronger. The advance in wool at the London sales stimulated the speculation, but prices are on the whole unchanged,'and sales have been for the month 970 of which 10,566,370 were n, against 021,000 pounds for the weeks of of ‘which 9,523,900 were foreign. NRADSTRERT'S TOCK REVIEW, Decline of “the Bxehn ad n Favorab NEW YORK, Sept. 27.—Hradstrect's Stock Review tomorrow will say: The decline In exchange rates to figures which apparently put an end to gold shipments to London direct has had a favorable effect on spec ulative sentiment. Even the unexpected ene ke Rate Effeet. gagement of $2500,00 gold for shipment to Germany by the principal “amateur’ specie porter could not overcome the impression d by this tendency. Canadian bank- ers have taken $&0,00 of gold for transfer to that ocountry. All of this was offtset by the tangible wenkness that has reigned in the exchange market In consequence of the appearance of liberal suppiies of com- mercial bills and the offering of a large quantity of bankers' sixty-day sterliog |n connection with loans of foreign merchants, The formal dissolution of the Belmonts Morgan bond syndicate is aiso favorably regarded While these events account for the as- sertion of an underlving ness in speculation, v ne of the market s w. Public “participation develops bullish- till nar- slowly and London has not been n factor. En- couragement to pool operations is found in the assured safely of the torn crop and in the increasing tendency shown in railroad earnings. The bellef in speculative circles is that heavy gains will be recorded within the next month by all the western roads and that this will give Wall strect plenty of material to discount speculatively, thoush some qualifications ar ised by ‘the low prices ‘which still rule in grain.
