The as a mere natural phenomenon was certainly not very interesting. It was much in nead of a boyish imagination to liven it up. It was too low to allow: of Mr. Mor. ford’s walking upright in it, and the floor was littered with ancient rubbish, and with the decayed remains of a paleozoic cart After creeping inwards for ten or twelve paces they turned a corner, and Nellie showed signs of reluctance. The little wax taper, burning in its socket in the silver matchbox, showed what looked like queer, irregular pillars and rafters; they were really straggling roots of the big butternut tr overhead At the end of the passage they found some half rotten planks fixed upright like a rude door; Morford pulled at one of them, and it came away, revealing a further narrow cavity beyond. Nellie shrank back “What is there in there?’ asked Morford “I don't know it isn't nice; let's go back.” “A potato cellar, perhaps. Yes, we'll go back. The sunshine is pleasanter, isn't it Do you supps Tom ever explored that place when he played robber ‘He must have been brave if he like to be whera it's all alive and She sighed with relief when they stood once more in the broad October daylight. They strolled round the corner of the house, and looked up at the mighty, overspreading boughs of the butternut “It reminds me of when T used boy,” remarked the young man. “I wa very fond of nuts in those days. That old tree seems to be full of them; wouldn't it ba fun to get up there and pick some! Have you ever been up?”’ Nellie shook her head. “There's no rope; des, T don't climb ropes; I'm a girl.” 3ut’ here's a good ladder,” rejoined her companion, pointing to one that lay nder the end of the house hard by. “Why, so there is! They overlooked the flattened roof of the old house, and had a fin> view all about the surrounding country. The breeze blew sweet and fresh, the sunshine twinkied down be. tween the leaves, and the nuts bobbed against their heads. It was fine! Nellie had never been up in a tree; but now she thought it would be wise to spend most of her time here. It was more exhilarating than any other habitation she knew of. “This is just like a little room, with a delightful smile at her companion, who smiled back. “‘And see—here is another almost as big on the other side of the great branch. I'm going to climb over into it. Mind you don't fall, then; let me hold your hand. She scrambled across, and Morfc carefully down into the broad crot a moment she uttersd a shout. “Oh, see! The Utah jobbers have been clamoring for a conference of the traffic maragers of the Union Pacific, Southe ern Pacific and Rio Grande Western for months and a dozen meetings have been slated, only to be called off. Trafic Mana- ger Munroe of the Union Pacific has been in the west for over a month and has, it is an- nounced from Salt Lake, agreed to meet a committee at Salt Lake on Friday. He and Mr. Smurr of the Southern Pacific have fixed that date. but the Rio Grande Western has kicked out and will probably not attend the meeting. At Union Paciflc headquarters Mr. Munroe is scheduled at Portland, Ore., on Friday, and if that program is carricd out the conference at Salt Lake will have to be postponed again, An eftor: is also being made to have a mee % called at Chicago next Tuesday to consider the Utah rate question, and another meeting Is booked for St. Loms at the same time to take up southeastern matters. As many freight men, particularly of western lines, have business at both meetings, an effort is being made to have the Chicago meeting tra ferred to Louis. In the meantime the Utah jobbers are hav ing a hard time of it. The S thern Pacifio wcted naughty and put in a rate for the Frisco Jobbers to Ogden thit was way below schedule ar/ffs, and the Union Pacific and Rio Grande Wostern refused to do business on thoir basis, As a result Ogden jobbers cannot get the bene efit of the Union Pacific and the Salt Lake jobbers are shut out of the Southern Pacific low rate. The Southern Pacific people demand a general revision of rates from tha Missouri_river before they will restore their tarifis. The Union Pacific claims that its re- ductions in rates from Omaha to Salt Laka and Ogden were not as fiyers, but will be kept permanent. The Overland has also re- duced rates eastbound on bullion, and ha been giving Utah the benefit of rates to com= mon points. It is prefty safe to say that the Salt Lake conference will not be held, and that the Utah jobbers will find no relief until the matter is taken up at a general meeting of the managers of all the lines Interested, - WERE UP FOR ARRAIGNMENT, sed Parties ke ore the Judge.
