COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIA Whest Was Given a Vigorous Down the Beale Yesterday, THAT CEREAL RULED WEAK EARLY orn Was Agnin Very Wenk and Re- ecelved No Support but from Shoerts Covering—Stocks and Uox CHICAGO, Sept. 4—Gold shipments, weak eables and heavy selling gave wheat a vigorous shove down the scale today, De- cember closing 1%ec lower. May corn closed %e lower, May oats e lower, and pro- visions also finished at declines, Wheat ruled weak nearly the entire ses #lon, Cables were weak and lower and de- liveries in the northwest were again large— nearly double what they were a year ago— and all domestic markets were on the down grade. Advices from New York sald that there was some continental buying e, but If so It was of a very conserva- order and not ctive enough to have any influence in steadying prices. The gen- eral duliness in speculation, together with the bearish factors in the situation, as seen in the heavy and Increasing deliveries in the northwest and the declining forelgn markets, made holders despondent, and there was a general disposition to get rid of long stuff, but there was so little de- mand that concessions had to be made, and hence the price was steadily on the down grade and there was little recovery. De- cember sold early at 61%e, #old off steadily to 60%c, and that wus about the price at noon. Trade kept dull during the last hour, but_improved a fraction on covering by #hort: December sold at from 60%c to 6lc and 61%c split, but with more qul\l ship- ments and heavy selling by Pardridge the miarket went to pleces at the finish, Decem- ber closing at t0%c. Corn was again very weak and recelyed no support but from shorts covering. The day's rm‘vl{:l& numbered 714 cars by rail and 284% bu. by canal. May sold at 30c and from 29%e to e for about fifteen min- ut after the opening, and even touched 8%e for an Instant. At the close it was Oats held steady, notwithstanding the weakness in corn.” May sold from 21%c to 20%c, but improved some, closing firm at 2ic. In sympathy with grain and on heavy sell- ing by Armour, provisions were weak at the. start and weaker later. They rallied a little from the lowest point of the day's range, but the improvement was due alto- gether to covering b, shorts. Compared with the previous day's closing price Sep- tember pork Is 20c lower and January un- changed, tember lard is unaltered, but January Is 7ic lower and January ribs 2ijc lower. The advance, which had been quite marked in the southwestern shares the previous day, was checked by realizations. The declines recorded in this group did not, however, exceed fractions. The rise was variously ex- plalned as a move against the shorts and as due 1o the early impending completion of the Reading reorganization plan. In coal circles it has been held that a tenabfiitation of the anthracite in dustry would be impossible until the Reading had been placed on n solvent basis. August 30, CATTLE- was characterized by another large run of cattle, the liberal re- ceipts of yesterday being exceeded by 1,000 head. It was the same old story that has been repeated with slight variations every day for the past month or so—large offerings of cow stuff and stock cattle, but a dearth of good beef stecrs. There was, in fact, al- most nothing In the way of fat cattle. There were some good grass westerns that would do for killers, but the feeders were strong competitive buyers for that class of stuff and got the greater share. Chicago and all eastern markets continue very dull, and the reports from those points had a depressing effeet upon the market here. The result was a very dull market on ali grades, with prices generally 10v lower. Theré were forty or more loads of cows and heifers on sale, and the buyers seemed to feel that they could afford to take their time. The bids were generally lower, and that made the seliers slow, and the result was a dull and lower market, prices as a rule showing a decline of 10c, Stockers and feeders were in large supply, and there was no scarcity of either light of heavy cattle. The demand wus pretty fair and the offerings were pretty well cleaned up before the close. Prices ranged all the way from easier to from bc to loc lower, The break in the market of the two past days Is expected to increase the country , as there are pleaty of buyers who ttle and who have been waiting to y on a break.
