s A AB A R A A THE OMAHA DAILY BEE:; FRIDAY, AUGUST 9 ner ED TO NB A CUBAN STEAMER Swift Salling Ship Recently Pare ehased and Loaded at Baltimore. BALTIMORE, Aug. 8.—The Associated press dispatehies to the effect that the steamer James Woodall is being chased by a Spanish warship on susplofon of engaging in flibus- tering operations are confirmatory of reports In circulation here prior to the veasel's ar- rival on July 9. A number of suspicious circumstances led to the belief in shipping circles that the Woodall wae in the service of the Cuban insurgents. She 1s a small steamer of more than average speed. and was bought early in July from the Woodall Shipe building company by a stranger giving his name as Captain Hudson of New York, the price pald being $13.500 In cash. He said he wanted (he vessel to transport coal to Progresso Mexico. Enough hard coal and provisions to last a year were placed aboard and the large supply of the latter, coupled with other facts, led the Spanish consul here 10 have the steamer photographed and coples, with other information concerning her, sent to all Cuban and Spanish officials in southern waters. No action against her could be taken here, everything being regular, It is supposed that off Klorida or Mexico the Woodall discharged part of her cargo and took aboard fnsurgent reinforcements and arms. moderate cash, 64t4o; No. 1 hard, but Interest; ints net Rrazilian movement, quiet and without speculative Wteady at unchanged to & p 2 northern, ol we. This action was not unexpected. In fact, we learned that it was coming two weeks ago.” Mr. Payne added that the question was purely oue of law. “We debts are charged, I which should not see, with paying off be preferred. The truth Is, we have paid off some preferred debts by order of the court, but you may be sure we have not pald anything we were not required to pay. The receivers are also charged with standing in with Mr. Adams, ch nan of the reorganization board. Now it Is true that Mr. Adams has given the re- ceivers very strong financlal support. He had advanced $5,000,000 to the receivers and urally they have tried to work in harmony with the people who own the property an who are entitled to consideration. But Mr. Adams does not control the receivers and doe not direct their polic As a matter of fact the receivers do not approve of his plan to unite the interests of the Northern Pacific and the Great Northern. I consider the p posed unfon of interests as against publ interests, not to be countenanced by the pub- lie. The Northern Pacific is a great public highway and its construction was largel alded by a land grant. The people, there fore, have a right to expect continued ind vidual operation of the road. The receivers have recently entered upon a new policy in regard to the disposal of these lands to a tual settlers. They desire the advent of im migration and the settlement of the coun- try. The lands will accordingly be sold to purchasers of this class and prices for tillable tracts will be clos to the government prices."” Regarding Mr. Ives' plan of local receivers along the line of the road. in other words, a receivership by states or sectlons, he sa d such a plan would result in utter confusion and disaster. Forecloxure of Mortgnge Ordered. PORTLAND, Ore., Aug. 8.—In the United States court the suit of the Farmers' Loan and Trust company agalnst the Oregon Rail- way and Navigation company for foreclosure of ‘a mortgage amounting to $12,500,000 and interest from December, 1803, came up. Judge Bellinger allowed the bill and the de- cree of foreclosure will be entered. The suit was brought June 25, 1884, on account of the failure of the Union Pacific, which then con- trolled the Oregon Railway & Navigation com- pany, to pay interest amounting to about $1,000,000. nd Burlington V Two special Pullman sleepers will leave Omaha today for Hot Springs, the Black Hills and the Yellowstone National park, re- turning via Minneapolis.
