They have always been cut, there no apparent reason why they should not be cut this y well. That, at least, {§ the way some the roads are looking the matter, E move of every competitor is being watched with great care, and the very first time that any rate to Denver ig shaded there will be ono of the liveliest fights that the western roads have seen in a long time. Sever other excursions that have been advertised are being closely watched, as it is difficult to see how some of the trips can be made and all the accessories that are pr can be furnished at the advertised rates. The rates proper will not be cut, but the side trips, meals, transfers and other things wh are to be thrown in will make the r much lower than can be obtained by the reg ular tourlsts, Clark 10 Succeed Megeath, D. 0. Clark, -who for the past two years has been the representative of the coal de- partment of the Union Pacific at Denver, will be appointed to the ppsition made vacant by the resignation of G. W. Megeath and will enter upon his duties shortly after July 1. Mr. Clark was general superin tendent of the coal department of the Union Pacific when it became a department and con- tinued at the head of the coal interests of the company until Charles Francis Adams be- eame president of the Union Pacific, when, like the rest of the “old guard,” he was requested to resign to make room for a Boston fhan. The “whirligig of time brings its revenges” and now Managing Receiver Clark will see his old friend back again in the place which he made I years a D. O. Clark knows the coal properties as Intimately as the retiring superintendent He was assoclated with their growth and knows their needs. In an interview had with a Cheyenne Sun-Leader reporter Mr Clark admitted he was coming back to Omaha to take the place he held prior to the assumption of t management of the Unlon Pacific by the Adams combination. General Superintendent Hughes of the Elk horn d yesterday that the rye in most sections along the system ywas mostly cut, but would not yield a very large crop, on a count of the frosts. “The oat crop,” said he, “bids fair to be large and will all be cut by the middle of July, or a short time there- after. This moderate weather, while it has a tendency to retard the growth, will give the heads an opportunity to fill out, a very decided benefit to the graln. Corn is n spiendid condition and the Elkhorn valley never has looked g0 well as now." Harvesting will be late along the main line of the Union Pacific, but s proceeding well in Kansas.
