BY EDWARD (Copyrighted, 1895.) CHAPTER 11 The sunken, cat-like eyes of Alfonse, the suavity of movements and the closeness he stuck to the detective's eib while the latter was making his second anc more complete examination of the papercd room, had maturally drawn attention to him “You walit with which maroon Stacey's 1 upon the parties fn this room at the time when these were killed, 1 believe,” said the detective suddenly, turning upon him after a long look out of one of the windows Yes, sir,” replied the waiter. He cast a_ fur- tive glance into the impassioned face of the Roman woman and took the chair. Stacey took from his pocket two diagrams procured from the coroner's physician, show- ing the location of the wound and the direc- tion taken by the bullet in each of the vic- 5. With these as a guide he located upon Alfonse’s head the spot marked by the wounds and placed a finger on it. As he did €0 he felt that the man trembled slightly, but he appeared not to notice it. He next gauged the track of the bullets by means of his walking stick, which he held against Alfonse’s head, regulating its angle by means of the diagrams. This done acey f:It that he had secured the line along which the fatal square bullets had traveled. Having very little of the artistic in his soul, the detective had therefore paid but slight attention to the picture, excepting as one of the component parts of the room as a whole, possessing abont the same refa- tive importance in his eyes as the windows and the furniture. Tt now suddenly leaped into prominence as the one single feature of the apartment worthy of his attention. He dismissed Alfonse and turned to the picture. hung about eight feet from the floor level and three feet above the oaken mantel. The canvas appearad to be about 24x30 inches and was surrounded by a heavy gilt frame. Having observed this much from the vantage ground of the carpet, Stacey rang the electric bell and demanded a stepladder. When this was brought and he was again alone he pro- ceeded to make a closer inspection of the picture. He was no sooncr at the top of the ladder and his face upon a level with the portrait than he made an important dis- covery. What was the motive back of it all? The day afier these discoveries Stacey was 1king down Broadway above Union square with a fellow membor of the force, when, in the vicinity of Eighteenth street, he sud- denly drew his companion into the doorway. of a cigar store. “Do you sco that man going up the street on the other side? Wears a soft hat and has a half-slinking walk? The other nodded afirmatively “Do me a favor and find out where he I cannot do it, because he knows me."” Without a word the other detective started o follow the retreating figure, which was none other than that of Alphonse, the eclub waiter. Stacey continued his walk downs town. v Several hours later he recelved a report from his companion. Alfonse had proceeded up to Madison square, turned up Fifth avenue and had finally disappeared in one of the brown stone mansions of the latter thorough- fare, entering by the rear way after making a short detour through several small siteets. The mansion in question was found to be the one occupied by the Countess Claire Brodsky. This was a startling bit of {nformation to Stacey. To the ordinary man, perhaps, it would be nothing out of the ordinary for a club servant to be seen visiting a_ Fifth avenue residence by the rear way. He was probably calling upon the domestics. But to Stacey it had an entirely different aspget. It enabled him to indulge in what he admitted to be some of the wildest guess- ing of his entire official carcer, but which guessing was, nevertheless, based upon what little of fact he had been able to establish regarding the double crime at “The Myrtl The result of his guessing was that he in'mediately dispatched an officer in citizen's clothes to the club house with a warrant for the arrest of Alfonso upon sight. The officer shortly returned with the information that Alfonse had restgned his employ at “The Myrtle" the day before, and that his residence and present whereabouts were un= known. Then Stacey took the warrant into his own hards, and, after swearing out another one to go with it, was hastily driven in a cab to the Countess Brodsky's residence. There he was met with the Information that the countess had that morning quietly left the country on the Etruria, intending to return to Rusela, and that her household effects were at that moment being packed to be sent *Find out where he goes." after her. An inspection of the mansion by the detective confirmed the statement that the bird had flown. But what of Alfonse? He had certainly not left upon the Etruria, because it was less than five hours since he had been going into the Fifth avenue house. But a dili- gent search of the city by the metropolitan | police, and a close watch kept upon depart- ing steamers for weeks after, failed to locate him, and he very likely slipped away in some sort of disguise and joined the countess upon the other gide of the Atlantic. And so Stacey was bafl the two warrants which became so much waste But that his guesses in the matter wera not o wild as one might infer from the facts at his disposition is proven by the fol- lowing statement from the head of the Pari- sian_police, which was transmitted to In- spector Byrnes by cable two days after the flight of the countess “Laroue and Narbon were after all, and he had sworn out aper. membegs of a | notorious revolutionary society of Monfmartre known as ‘Les Couteax Rouges.'
