The arrest of Joseph Reevess and Rdward Rust, two boys 11 years of age, discloses to the police for the first time a gang of young thieves who have been committing depreda- tions in Omaha for the past two months. Many articles of value which have mysteri- ously disappeared are now accounted for. Monday evening these two boys went Into the Omaha Business college and proceeded to rob the pockets of the coats and cloaks of the students, From the cloak of Miss Tina Pearson they took $3 and a number of post- age stamps. The loss was soon discovered | and President Roose of the college saw the boys going out of the building. He at once suspected the lads and followed them quite a distance down Sixtecnth street, where' he met a policeman and +caused their arrest. The boys were taken to the station and con= | fessed “to the theft Yesterday two tear- ful mothers appeared at the fail, having spent a night of anxiety looking for their boys, but learning for the first time of their arrest through’ the morning papers. The boys were | brought out before their mothers and all ot them began crying. Young Reeves fs the on of a widow and has been selling popeorn in the different large office buildings, The Bee, New York Life, city hall, Paxton and other blocks. Rtust' fs the son of a loco- motive engineer and has been running around with a pretty tough gang of youngsters, In the prescnce of Sergeant Sigwart and Assistant County Attorney Day the boys cone fessed to being thieves and said that they stole Miss Pearson’s money and s They further confessed to robbing candy stores, a hardware storo and the theft of a pocketbook from a drawer in an oflice in the New York Life building. Young Reeves has been allowed considerable freedom In the office blocks, as he had a note stating that his mother an invalid and that he was her only means of support. Rust usually went around with him and when they would find an office unlocked they would rummage around to seo what valuables they could find and carry away. They would spend the stolen money for anything that captured their fancy. The poiice are inclined to the belief that the boys stole a gcod many things dur- ing the rush of the holidays. About the time of the robbery in the New York Life building an office in The Bea building was robbad of §57, but no trace of the thief has been discovered. The boys denied this theft yesterday, but said that they had stolen stamps and other articles frem this building, In making their confession the boys sald that Joe Hawkins, a colored hoy of about the same age, was the 'ringleader of the gang and that he had educated them how to steal. They said that Joe forced them to ide their plunder with him, and not long ago ho tock a sum of money and a stolen pocketbook away from them, refusing to give them a cent of the money that they had stolen. Joe Hawkins o the rcputed son of a olored woman living on Ninth street and has bzen arrested a_number of times on charges of vagrancy and petit larceny. The county attorney has filed charges of Incorrigibility against all of the boys, and as they have confessed to thelr misdeeds it fs quite likely that they will be sent to the reform school. The mothers of Reeves and Rust say that they have tried to make the boys go to school, but through the influence of evil companions they were induced to commit crimes and run away from school. ey CONFESSES TO CAR ROBBERY.
