Brady of Buffalo handed up a. resolution to the ef- fect that when the house adjourn it be until Tuesday, January 8, at 10 o'clock. It was ruled out of order. Then followed a pro- tracted suspeasion of busin while the liouse waited for the appearance of the senate to join with it in canvassing the vote on state "officers. Meanwhila thirty-three chairs were placed in position for the ex- pected solons. The honorable senators of the state of Nebraska were announced, and entercd representativo hall, led by Secre- tary of the Senate Sedgwick, followed by Lieuterant Governor Majors. ‘The _latter presided at the jaint deliberations. ol of the senators was called By Secrctary Sedg- wick; of the house by Chief Clerk Geddes. It was anuounced that all wero present of both houses. Lieutenant Governor Majors announced to the joint session that they had been convened for the purpose of canvassing tho votes cast for state officers at the last biennial state eleetion of November 6, 1891, RESULT OF THE ELECTION DECLARED, Addressing the speaker the sccretary of ate sald ir—Agreeable to the provisions of sec- tion 4, article 5, of the constitution of the state of Nebraska, and section 1,634 of chap- ter iv., Consolidated Statutes of Nebraska, 1893, entitled, ‘Blections,’ I have the honor to hand you herewith the original abstract of the votes by counties as cast at the general election held in the state of Ne- braska on the 6th day of November, A. D., 1894, for officers of the executive depart- ment, members of congress and the choice of electors as expressed for United States senator. *“*Accompanying thess sealed returns T also have the honor to hand. you a tabulated statement of the foregomg votes, as pre- pared by this office from the duplicate re- turns to the sccretary of state as the law directs.” The method of canvassing the original re- turns is of a perfunctory order, the county clerk’s returns being opened and the total vote of the county read. Then, from the tabulated statement prepared by the secre- tary of state, the speaker declared the of- ficers clected. A ripple of mirth was created when the speaker said: “I find that William J. Bryan received 80,000 votes for United States senator, but I do not find that he is elected. On motion the joint session was de- clared adjourned, the senators retired and the speaker directed a roll call of the house. RULES WILL WAIT. Meyers of Brown sent in a resolution that as the rules of 1889 have been adopted by the house, he moved that the rules of 1893 be adopted in their place, with a few of the rules of 1889 inserted. Chapman of Saline moved that the whole question be postponed until the speaker had appointed a committee on rules, Carried, 1t was moved by Bacon of Dawson that the committeo of five on relief for destitute be Inereased to seven. Carried, The question of adjournment was finally adjusted by the adopiion of a motion by Brady of Buffalo that when the house ad- Journed it adjourn until Monday, January 7, at 3 o'clock p. m, The inevitable trouble over the new high backed chairs culminated by the Introduction of a resolution by Casper of Butler that the cards on the desks be raised in order that the speaker could see the name of the members and the counties from which they hatled. ~ The chairs cost $6.50 apicce, and it was suggested by one member that the backs of them be sawed off. The houso went into an irformal committee of the whole on mechanics and all sorts of sug- gestions in regard to getting out of the dif- fleulty. One member suggested that a puppet show contrivance be attached to the desk by means of which a member, on arising, could press a spring and shoot the name of himself and his county into the alr, In tho midst of this jangle over the $975 pur- chase of Impracticable chairs the house tool a recess until 3 p. m, After tho joint convention clincd ta coneur in the senate motion to ad- Journ until Tuesday, and afier a brief con- fereuce the senate ‘agreed to assemble again Monday, as per the house resolution adopted this forenoon. assist- mail car- sp Chester Harlan, Howard he would suggest the Barry of to the be held the house de- SENATE PROCEEDINGS QUIET, Routine Worlk Occuply lutroduced, LINCOLN, Jan. 3.—(Speclal)—The senate Wwas in a more composed mood this morning and patiently listened to the reading of the Journal of the past two days' proceedin Some little friction was engendered at the very outset of the proceedings between the opposing partisans. Pope of Saline offered a resolution authorizing the secretary of the senate to purchase all necessary supplies for the use of the senate. Stewart, the stalwart populist from Sloux county, wanted the reso- lution to e over under the rules, and the lieutenant governor let him have it that way, Pope then moved a suspension of the rules and the republican majority hung up the rules without a question. Pending the re- submission of Pope's original motion Stowart sent to (he secretary’s desk In writing a motion requesting the secrotary of state to furnish a copy of the inventory of the senate's property and supplies taken at the close of the Twenty-third session. The motion was set aside on & point of order raised by Pope to the effect that a motion was already pending. “My motion waa intended as a substitute,” interjected Stewart. “The chalr did not There was nothing in mation to so indicate," governor's reply. It has always been the custom to read all bills the first and second times by their titles only. The In- novation of a full reading on the day of intro- duction will doubtless pall npon the ears of the senators and will hardly be continued for a great length of time. After the reading of seven bills the senate took a recess until 2:30 o'clack. At the afternoon session Senator Rathburn of Furnas withdrew the recolution he offered at the morning session relating to the senate employes. Senate file No. 9, by Watson, was read the first time and then a concurrent motion providing that when the senate ad- Journ it be until Tuesday, January 8. Boyd's theater last evening had a decidedly ar'ety flavor, Sandow's Trocidera Vaud-v L'es giving in the main an interesting and novel varlety entertainment. It Is pretty hard at this lato day to say anything new of tho modern Hereules whese feats have been the subject of exhauctive newspaper articles for three years past. Sandow closes the per- formance, and rightly, too, for the audience has been led gradually up to the crowning feature of the night, and interest is excited to see the great athiete of the century. His marvelous display of the muscles is an an- atomical study, uetive alike o the physi clan and the’la There Is nothing re- pulsive In the exhibition, although oversens tive souls might protest against a too marked display of the human form. The Jordan fam- ily of gymnasts are unexcelled in their aerial flights and the paraphernalia they require makes Boyd's look like a section of a winter circus. Ben Dunham is probably the great- est bar performer in the world. His act Is clean and artistic, and the young man won quite as much if not more applause than did tho star of the company in his display of stréength. Tom Browne, the whistler, and William Lucifer as a high jumper held the audience interested to the close of thelr acts, while Marguerite, the contorticnist, created a great sensation. Amann is an excecdingly versatile imperscnator. Whether his imper- sonations a‘e lifelike is purely a matter for those who have seen the characters to tes- tify; certainly a great many of them look like their pictures. But when Amann had given an impersonation of Harrison and then followed it with a picture of Cleveland it was asking too much of a portion of the audi- ence at least. Billy Van figures in the house bill, but nowhere else. His act has been ancient for a decade, and it is time for Billy to bo thinking of the Forrest home for de- crepits of the profession. The private exhibition given by Sandow, the strong man, in the pariors of the Millard yesterday afternoon was intensely enjoyed, especially by the members of the medical fraternity. Sandow, In citizens' dress, Is but an ordinary looking man, aside from’ his handsome face, but when stripped 1s a veri- table muscular monstrosity. He began by giving an exhibition of the different muscles of the chest, back, abdomen, arms and legs, both in a contracted and quiescent state, and the exclamations of admiration and amazement eclicited were both many and fervent. Sandow's chest expansion is some- thing wonderful. His abdominal muscles were like corrugated Iron; the biceps knotty and adamantine, and the bectorals like ridges of brass. In fact, his whole muscular de- velopment is of such a character as to in- duce instant belief that he is anything less than a matchless physical freak. The doc- dors were in their elements, and put the modern Hercules through such another cate- chestical and manipulatory process as would have surely taxed the patience of a man evenly balanced as to temperament and di position. He seemed to enjoy their over- towering curiosity, and entered heartily into their reseaches for enlightenment, The big Sandow Troeaderc Vaudeville show will close its engagement at the Boyd tomor- row afternoon with the matince performance, This s to enable the company to reach St Paul for a Sunday matinee, B, D.
