COMMERCIAL AND FINA) Wheat Was Almcst Btationary in Price During the Forenoon, CORN WAS EASY EUT CLOSED LOWER - i Cable Advices Recoived Near the Close Re- porting the Argentine Wheat Har- vest treatly Delayed by Heavy Raing Holped Prices, (1AL CHICAGO, Dec, 19.—Wheat was almost stationary In price during the forenoon, but had an upturn In the latter half of the sesslon, which ended in ‘an advance of e New York started the by sending numerous buying orders here Corn was eagy and only rallied in sym pathy with wheat near the end, closing e lower, May oats closed unchanged, and provisions finished lower all around. Wheat was very dull early, with little news of importance to turn prices up or down. May started unchanged at 58%c, and fluc- tuated largely within %e limits during the greater part of the session, Toward the mid- dle of the day news from other markets became a little more interesting. The for- elgn markets were reported to be about steady. The northwestern rec very much reduced, and the totals of the primary market receipts were much than those of a week ago or of the before. The Atlantic port cle | light, cable advices received near the close | reporting the Argentine wheat harvest de- layed by heayvy rains, and liberal b orders from New York helped the May closing at o Corn was the weakest one of the principal grain markets, It cpened a trifle under the closing price of the day before, and kept up a slow decline until it recéived a little encourngement from the later strength in wheat, May opened at from 49%4e to 490%c and old “off to from 48%c to d8%e by 2 o'clock. It recovered to 4% bid about half an hour later. The cash demand was poor _and prices for carloads in the sample market from Ye to g lower. The slack- ness of the castern demand encouraged ghort selling, May closing at 491c bid. Oats_continued to weaken, influenced by free offerings. The weakness in corn could flso be credited with a share of the govern- ing power. May started at from 32c to 82e, sold down to 31%c and closed at 3214c, react- ing in sympathy with wheat. Provisions had a _weak tone. The run of hogs was 37,00 head, and 3, 00 head “are estimated for tomor- row. The pi were the big sellers of the day. The tone of the market was heavy during the greater part of the sional rallies took place owing to the covering of short con- tracts at the lower figures, but the selling was far in excess of the buying, and ex- cept In a few instances the closing prices show loges on the day of from % to 1 cent, -the heaviest loss being in Suga | wag thought that the publicatinon of the | statement of the Distilling and Cattle Feed- ing company's directors would precipitate a lot of the trust stock upon the market, but there was no great pressure to sell. At the closing the bears hammered the stock down 1 per cent to 8, but it was well supported by insiders, and the strong buying frightened the shorts into covering, with the result that % per cent of the loss Quickly recove Before noon an. slight demonstration & made nst the shares which depressed them But % per cent. At noon the sales up to that hour were 5300, Only 700 shares ad- ditional ‘were sold during the afternoon, the fluctuations being within 14 per cent, and the last sale was % per cent above the lowest of the day and % per cent below yesterday's closing, The trading In the stock made it very cvident that the managers of the trust had declded to stand under the stock and break the force of their disclgsures of the unfavorable state of the company's finances. Sugar was the most active of the entire list and was sold freely, it is believed for the account of the clique which controls the movement of the stock, reports being put m circulation that strong efforts would be made at Washington to put an ad valorem tariff on sugar. The shares declined gradu- ally throughout the day and closed at the lowest point touched, and 1% per cent be- low last night's figures. The preferred lost 7% per cent. The grangers show a depre- clation in value on the day's transactions of % tc per cent St. Paul was the only one of the group in which the trading was at all heavy. The selling in_that stock was based on rumors the statement of the net earnings for November will be unfavorable. The shares of the Reading road were depressed by liquidation on the part of holders who are dissatisfied with the plan of reorganization. A decline of 1% per cent took place, of which % per c'nt was recovered in the final sales. Chicago Gas was in good buy- ing during the first hour, and this, together with the scarcity of the stock in the loan ‘market, caused an adv; of 11 per cent from the opening, which was at a decline of 1 per cent. Liquidating sales brought about a reaction of 1 per cent, of which 1§ per cent was recovered, making a net gain of per cent. Northwestern preferred rose 1 per cent, and is the only stock which gained over 1 per cent on the day. A decline was recorded in American Tobacco of 3t per cent, with asubsequent recovery of 2 per cent. New Jersey Central Is down 18 per cent, and Lead and Laclede Gas 1 per cent each. The market closed weak. The bond market betrayed weaknzss dur- ing the entire day. The Volume of business was large and " ageregated $1,631,600, of which $173,000 was of St. Louis & San_Fran- ciseo_consol 4s, $160,000 of Chicago & North- ern Pacific fifst trust receipts, $149,000 of Southern s, $114,00 of Reading second in comes, $102,000 of Reading deferred incomes nd $101,000 of Missouri, Kansas & Texas seconds. The Evening Post's London cablegram: On general realizations before the holidays even consols were lower today. South Americans were generally good, but Brazil- ians have fallen on the continued declines in exchange. Americans lower, closing flat on the bellef that impending gold ship- ments from America must seriously affect the financlal situation on that side. The fact that no serious attempt is apparently contemplated to deal with the currency question has a bad effect here and is the main_cause of keeping influential dealers here from touching Americans vet. WEDNESDAY, Dec, 19, There was a siight improvement in re- ceipts of all Kinds todlay, the total being in the nelghborhood of 22 cars, In round numbers there have been received during 13,700 hogs and 1 Compared with arrivals for the corresponding three days last week this is an increase of about 5u0 cattle, a decrease of 200 hogs and no materfal change In sheep, The cattle market today was one of those dull affairs In which no one receives any satisfaction. Buyers bought a good many cattle 10¢ and 15c lower than day, and some 2c to 40c lower than lay, and still they were apparently not at all anxious for the cattle even at these figures, The supply was tolerably liberal and the quality none of the best, and with bad markets east, discouraging shipping and speculative crs, the dressed beef men, whose wa limitsd, had everything the Slaughterers claim that their cool are at present full and that there s very little demand for beef, and hence even low pricas have comparatively little attraction for them. There were a good many cattle till in first hands when business for the day was over. The cow market G e M was not much better than the market for beef steers, Buyers were generally insisting on lower prices and the general trade was dull on the basis of a 6c to 10¢ decline, The best veal calves ruled firm, common &tuff was dull and weak. Good feeding bulls were in fair request and steady, but rough stock generally sold lower.
