An Inspection of the working draws Ings from which the furnaces are built will convince the most skeptical that the brick work {8 of the most substantial and lasting character. The brick work carries nothing but its own welght and s of ample thickness. The alr spaces undoubtedly add to the life of the brick work by carrylng away the heat. In the ‘contracted throats, where the tems poratures range from 3,000 to 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit, the arches are constructed of fire brick of the most refractory character, 80 designed and supported as to appear als most ndestructible. The repairs in five years at the Florence plant were unimportant and accomplished at a nominal cost. “Although the resuits obtained are o ox- ceptionally high, an inspection of the records indicate that the fire could have been handled to even better advantage. The ash analysis tion last August, during which Smoke Com- | Shows thero was some 20 per cont of un- missfoner W. H. In the course of his report Mr. Br: n says cnce plant as a whole. Assuming that the | large Allis pumping engine is developing & horso power with twelve pounds of water per hour, a figure probably above the true state of affairs, the management is maintaining one-horse power with a consumption of 1,42 pounds of coal per hour, a result which I do not_believe 1 reached, oertanily not ex- ceeded, by any of the steam plants in the “The furnace Is the invention of Frank | Mississivpl valley, if, indecd, It is beaten any= where with fuel of this character. The gaseous products of STANDING BEAR IN OMAHA, combustion in passing over the bridge wall traverse a contracted opening and ars fmme diately deflected downward by a hanging wall, They then emerge into a combustion chamber of liberal dimensions, the exit from which is through another contfacted throat area or checker work of fire brick. From this point the gases take the usual course lkruugh boller tubes to the chimney. Re oknizing the value of an ample supply of oxygen properly distributed and pre-heated, the Inventor made use of hollow side walls The air is admitted into the walls and passes through channels of considerable height, but limited width, the channels being separated from the furnace proper by only the linings and arches, which are always of high tem- perature. This construction not only absorbs to a large extent the heat usually lost by radiation, but returns it to the furnace, one channel ‘discharging immediately over the fire at the front end of the grate, the other immediately behind the bridge wall at the entrance to the combustion chamber. “The bofler is of the Reynolds vertical type, not differing except in detail from the ordinary vertical internally fired boiler common in small plants, It is, however, eighteen 'feet over all, six foet external diam- eter, with 124 two and a half inch tubes, six- teen feet long, only thirteen feet of which, however, other threo feet passing through the steam space of tho boiler. The standard form of construction is departed from in this In stance to the extent of cutting away most of the boiler, there being an annular ring two feet high and five feet wide. This construc- tion permits the most thorough interming ling of the heated gases with the water. The boiler rests directly on the brick work of the furnace, immediately above the last fire throat. HOW THE TEST WAS MADE. “Tho test was made In close accordance with the rules of the American Soclety of Mechanical Engineers. ~The usual firemen handled the fires. Ordinary slack coal was used and the boiler was operated In all re- spects as if in everyday service, except that it was pushed beyond its ordinary capacity. The furnace and boiler were well heated b fora the test, at which time the water level, thickness and condition of the fire bed, steam pressure, etc, were noted on logs and brought to the same condition at the close of the test. Frequent and regular observa- tions were taken and noted on the logs cover- ing the steam pressure, chimney draft, tem- perature of room, chimney, feed water, as well as on the Barrus calorimeter, to deter- mine the character of the steam as to dry ness. Special observers looked after the: coal and water logs, an independent tally record ol which was kept to.insure a check on the logs. The draft was measured in the up- take leading from the boiler to the smoke flue, some twenty feet aboye the level of the grates, The draft was by no means good, be- cause eight other boilers were using the same chimney. ““As to smoke abatement, two charts were taken, each of an hour's duration and of dif- ferent conditions of service. The results worked up by means of a planimeter showed an average of 2.79 per cent, a most excel- lent result, considering the fact that eight boilers wero connected with the same chim- ney, all being fired irregularly, different doors being left open. It will readily be seen that if each independent boiler should make a light cloud of smoke while being fired the result would be quite a perceptible cloud of smoke. In no case, however, was the smoke bad, and the occasfonal puffs were never black and continuzd but a few seconds, although the boiler under test was being crowded beyond its nominal capacity. Ob- servations of this and other chimneys con- nected with the Reynolds furnace indicate that under normal conditions the furnace is practically smokeless. No smoke was made when the fires were being cleaned, and in this the Reynolds furnace differs from most of the improved devices; in fact, the only time that smoke was visible at all was when the fires were carelessly handl:d, or when they were allowed to get dirty and were forced considerably beyond their usual ca- pacity. DEGREE OF EFFICIENCY. “The efficiency of the furnace was extra- ordinarily good. The plant realized 79.4 per cent of the heat value of the coal. The or dinary boiler and ‘furnace rarely reach 60 per cent, and that is only with the best coal and the most skillful management. he capacity was equally high, the boiler running 68.77 per cent above the usual rat- ing. The most surprising result is shown of evaporating, nearly four pounds from, and at 212 degrees per square foot of heating sur- face, and of developing and maintaining a horse power with less than nine square feet of heating surface, with a boiler composed largely of two and a hali-inch tubes. “In respect to safety, the Reynolds furnace ranks among the best. The furnace proper is in no way connected with the boiler proper and there s no pipe work under pressure and no complicated mechanism of any naturé; in fact, the improved results following from clean heating surfaces, due to the absence of soot, and the uniform temperature, due to the use of the arch and checker work should Increase the safety of the boiler plant as a_whole. “No extra degree of skill is required to se- cure proper results in the handling of the Reynolds furnace. Considerable time should always be given in the raising of steam, so that the walls may be heated gradually and uniformly, and in a short time the brick work will become white hot, and when the gases first given off by the disintegrating mass of coal pass through the contracted throats, which are maintained at high tem- peratures, they are thoroughly mixed and thelr combustion effected under the most favorable circumstances. Repeated observa- tions showed that only rarely were the gases passing through the last throat colored to a perceptible degree. “Any ordinary boiler can be changed to (he Reynolds setting in a week's time, and even less, if absolutely necessary. Bear was accompanied by two sergeants of company I, Twenty first ine fantry (Indians), now stationed at Fort Omaha. The general's gnest stood as solid $and straight as a statue, and In replying to questions never moved' a muscle except his lip Four years ago this winter, when the Sioux went on the war path, and attempted to whip all of the whites and half of the United States army at the Plne Ridge agency, Standing Bear left his tepee and went over (o the soldiers, belleving that his brethren were wrong in making fight against the whites, The Bear 1s not a Sioux chief, and thi chances are he never will be, but at the same time he Is one of the most progressive and intelligent Indians now living on_the Pine Ridge reservation. When Standing Bear left his kin and appealed to General Brooke for protection and offered assistance in gulding the soldiers across the weary wastes toward the hills where the battle of Wounded Knee was fought, his ofter was accepted. To substantate the t that he was a good Indlan, Bear went out and brought quarters yester- into the soldiers' camp sixty-five other Sioux Indians, who claimed that they were ready and willing to help the white soldiers In their fight These sixty-six redskins promised to be £00d and showed by their actions and dress that t had forsaken the blanket and tepee, and were anxious to take up the ways of the white man. General Brooke gave them employment as scouts and guides, and every one fulfilled his trust. After the Indian war was over General Brooke caused to be made a medal for these sixty-six good Indians and presented it to them. Yesterday wifng Bear wore the general’s medal on his breast and was as proud of it as.any prince with a king's decoration. After paying his respects to General Brooke Standing Bear asked for a letter of recoms mendation and the general wrote a note on war department paper stating that Standing Bear was a good Indian and had assisted United States troops when in need of & guide. Before returning to Pine Ridge Standing Bear will visit bis friends in com- pany I at Fort Omaha for a few days, While Standing Bear has great respeet and adwiration for General Brooke and has made aq effort to conform to the rules of the army when In milltary circles, he is a lttle nry on some matters of military etiquette. While the two soldiers who accompanied him on his vigit to the general were backing from the room, according to the army custom, and saluting the general as they retired, Stand- ing Bear was unmoved. When his business had been completed he threw formality. to the winds and with a brief “Mornin’, gen- eral,” strode from the room with an un- consiclous dignity that commanded even Gen- eral Brooke's smiling admiration. - Life is so short.
