LOUIS First of the New American Built Ooean Passenger Bteamers, MRS. CLEVELAND CHRISTENS THE RACER New and Powerful Amerlean Liner and Rival of the Fast Cunarder Afloat in Cramps’ Shipyards—Landmark in the Country's Sh ding History, PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 12.—Shortly after 1 o'clock today the magnificent steamship St. Louis of the American line was succoss- fully launched at Cramp's ship yards. The affair was witnessed by fully 50,000 people. Mrs. Cleveland, wife of the president, broke the traditional bottle of champagne on the bow of the noble ship as it glided down the ways, at the same time uttering these words: “I christen thee St. Lous.” In this instance and for the first time since the ceremony was observed at Cramp's ship yard the champagne was of American manufacture. All preparations for the launch bad been carefully made, and although the ship s 120 feet longer than any that has ever been launched at the yard, the difficult feat of getting a vessel from the ways into tho water was accomplished without a hitch, After the launch the invited guests to the number of 400 were entertained at a luncheon in the offices of the company. Charles H. Cramp in his speech of wel- come to President Cloveland said that with two exceptions the St. Louis is the larges and most powerful ship in the world. He referred to the progress of ship building under Cleveland’s administration and credited to his policy the fact that such wonderful results have been accomplished in America. The St. Louis, he said, is built on Ameri- can plans; by American workmen, and of American ‘material. The building of these ships was recommended by Mr. Cleveland and authorized by congress. In closing, he sald, that while there might be honest dif- ference of opinion on other subjects, Mr. Cleveland’s honorable and * patriotic naval policy will always be unanimous. The St. Louls is chiefly remarkable in that she is the first modern merchant marine structuro approaching her dimensions built in this country. She will also be the pioneer in what promises to become in time a spirited contest between the present’ English built ocean greyhounds and those which will be turned out from American ship yards. When completed she will - take her place among the vessels owned by the Interna- tional Navigation company which includes the Paris, New York and St. Paul, the latter being in process of construction in the yards of the Cramp company. SIXTEEN MONTHS BUILDING. The work of constructing the Sf. Louls was begun by the builders on July 27, 1893, fifteen months ago. More than 6,000 tons of steel have already been worked into the mam- moth steamer, which will, when completed, exceed in length and tonnage both the New York and Paris, and equal any other trans- atlantic liner. * Her length over all is feet 2 inches; length between perpendiculars, 35 feet 8 inches; extreme breadth, 63 feet; depth molded, 42’ feet; number of decks, 5 depth of water bottom, 4 feet: number of principal water tight compartments, 17; dis- tance of collision bulkheads abaft of stem, 33 feet. . After the vessel has been towed back to the docks the work of putting in her en- gines will begin, These aro of the quad- ruplo expansion type, and are expected to develop not less than 20,000-horse power. Each of the two engines will have four cylin- ders of 36,50, 71 and 100 inches .in dianieter. The piston stroke will be about 6) inches, The steam to keep the big engines going will be supplied by a battery of six double-ended boilers, each 20 feet long and 17% inchies in diameter, The steam pressure is expected to be about 200 pounds, to the square inch. The engines of the new ship, when completed, will be the largest of the quadruple. expangion type in the world. The cranks, shafts, connect- ing rods and steerage gear will be made of the finest ingot steel. In orderto come up to the builders' contract with the owners, these engines will have to send the St. Louis through the water at the rate of at least twenty knots an hour, under ordinary seas and golng conditions. The steerage apparatus will be of the screw gear type, with Willlams steam and hand. steering engine. The hull is of mild steel, of the best quailty. The arrangement of bulkheads and water provt compartments is such as to.make it practically impossible to sink the vessel It in collision the bulkheads are damaged three of the compartments might be com- pletely flooded and yet the vessel remain completely seaworthy. The same arrange- ment practically insures the ship against fire as it would be a comparatively easy mat- ter to confine a blaze to any one compart- ment. Another novel featuré In the con- struction of the St. Louls is that which has bsen introduced for the purpose of avolding low tide difficulties at the harbor bars in New York and Liverpool. Her double hull is filled with water ballast which can be pumped out as the vessel nears the end of her journey, thus decreasing her draft to a sufficient extent to enable her to pass over the bar at almost any tide. PASSSENGER ACCOMMODATIONS, When completed the St. Louls will have aceommodations for passengers as follows: First cabin, 320; second cabin, 200; steerage, 850; crew and employes, 400; total 1,770, To increase the safety of this multifude the ship will carry fourteen Chambers collapsi- ble lifeboats, fourteen ordinary lifeboats, one cutter, one gig and four metal boats, ail on the cabin deck. For the comfort of the pas- sengers there has been supplied In the plans a superb saloon, 110 feet long by fifty feet wide, which is to be exquisitely furnished Over the saloon rises a dome thirty feet long by sixteen feet wide and twenty-five feet | high amidships above the dining room deck. The dining room tables will be set fore and aft. The normal complement of officers, sea- men, eugineers and firemen, hands and at- tendants, will be about as follows: Captain, 1; oficers, 6; seamen, 48; firemen, 120; en- gineers and machinists, 30; oilers, 80; tew- ards and cooks, 124; sfewardesses, 16; chefs de cuisine, 2; mall clerks, 2; doctors, 1; pur- ser, 1; printer, 1. Total, 381, The gross register of the St. Louls will be 11,000 tons and as she slid into the water today it was 6,100, The St. Louis and St. Paul will differ materially in appear- ance from the Parls and the New York in that they have straight in stead of clipper stems. A feature which will be appreciated by the new ship's patrons will be the promenade deck which is designed to extend the entire length of the vessel with- out a break. America has entered the lists with Great Bridatn and will hereafter dispute with the Clyde builders thelr former supremacy in the construction of ocean greyhounds, As usual, when America starts in to do any- thing in rivalry with any other country, there is no half-way business about it If the performance to be rivaled cannot be eclipsed it must at least be equaled. And o the Philadelphia shipbuilders were not dismayed when they got an order to build two 16,000-ton passenger ships, which should be as big and as fine and as fast as anything that ever croised the Atlantic. One year nd threo months ago, almost to a day, the Cramps “laid down" the first of the big steamers, and three months later the keel plates were laid for the other, and, by direc- tion of their owners, they were designated respectively the St. Louls and St. Paul. It has been claimed that steel ships can now be built in American yards just as cheaply as on the Clyde, and the Cramps set themselves the task of proving it. As everybody knows, the New York and Paris are British bullt ships, and salled for some time under that flag, but congress, in 1892, passed an act granting the two ships an | American registry providing thelr owners would add Lo the fleet two vessels of not less tonnage and speed and equipment, to be built_ wholly of American materials and by American skill and labor. The American company accepted the conditions, congress passed the act, and we all remember how esident Harrison and his eabinet went to New York In person to haul down the cross of 8t. George and hoist in its place the stars | and stripes as the big liner New York was about to depart on her first real American | voyage across the Atlantie. 18 AMERICAN THROUGHOUT, The bullders of the uew leviathans bave Gustay Weist, Omaha, . The ships American from keelplate to oathead. 1s not a pound of forelgn metal in them, nor' will there bo an ounce of other than Amerls can material in their furnishings and lux~ urious equipment. Even the chronometers, will be of American make. There have #l- ready been used in the St. Louls more than 6,600 tons of American steel. The displacement of the St. Louls and St. Paul is 16,000 tons each, nearly twice the displacement of the New York (the big cruiser built by the Cramps) and 6,000 tons greater than either of the battle ships now under way. The ships are more than twice: the size of the Columbia and Minneapoli: the speed cracks of the navy, and dre b 2,000 tons smaller than the oneo famous Great Eastern, that monstrous British folly of thirty years ago. The motive power of these steamers consists of two quadruple expansion, vertical, six-cylinder engines on four cranks, driving twin screws, with & working pressure of 200 pounds of steam’ supplied by ten bollers, It is caloulated that the engines will develop about 20,000 collective horse power, and, that they will drive the ships at least twenty knots an hour In all sorts of weathor, The St. Paul will be ready for launching some time in February At the conclusion of Mr. Cramp's speech, Peter Griscomb of the International Naviga tion company, who acted as toastmaster, pros posed the health of the president of the United States, which was drank with cheer: Prosident Cleveland, in responding, said: “I would not be entirely frank if I did not acknowledge the extreme personal satlsfaction, afforded by the reference just made to me, in regard to the part which fell to me as a high duty in the work of creating a great navy, and, at the same time, stimulating American ship bullding. We shall fall to realize the full significance of what we have seen today If we overlook the fact that the causes of our congratulation reach beyond actual accomplishment and are not limited to' the things already done and within our sights While we may well be proud because we have, launched the largest and most powerful steamship ever built in the western hemiss, phere, and, with two exceptions, the largest and most powerful In the world, and while we may find reason for additional pride in the fact, notwithstanding general economy, untos ward conditions not cncouraging to such an achievement, this great vessel has been buflt on American plans, by American mechanics and of American material. ~ REVIVAL OF AMERICAN SHIPPING. “Yet we must not forget that our greatest cause of congratulation is found in the hope and promise these incidents furnish of the revival and development of American com merce, and the renewed appearance of the' American flag in forelgn ports. “I hope I shall not be accused of making a suggestion calculated to mar the gratificas tion which this occasion inspires It I remind you the ship we have just launched was bullt in_fulfillment of conditions imposed in cons sideration of the relaxation of our reglstry laws. Commerce s the life blood of & nation, and no country that loses or impove erishes it can obtain and maintaln a coms manding position among the nations of the earth. Our flag not only tells of our ex« istence, but it is a symbol of all that Amerls can_institutions represent. “It scems to me that the stars and stripes entering a port of the United States and spread over American property should never be frowned upon and repelled by American officials acting under the mandate of oun navigation laws. In the interest of a revivi of American commerce, 80 much needed, and for the honor of our flag, so dear to us all, 1 am willing that the defense of our governs ment and flag shall be accorded to all shipa of American ownership wherever bullt. Make: our flag a more familiar sight in the oceans carrying trade, and thus remind our citizens that” a large share of the carrying trade of the world is under laws giving them a. fair chance.” In conclusion President Cleveland . sald; “Since my participation in rebuilding our navy during a former official term has been flatieringly referred to, I hope it is not amiss for me to say that 1 shall deem myself espas claily fortunate if in time to come it can be sald that 1 did sométhing’ diring my n\:’tfll incumbency in a'd of the freedom and ex- tension of American commerce and the cons sequent further growth of American ship= building.
