LINCOLN, Nov. 7.—(Special)—The su- preme court convened today pursuant to | adjournment and a number of cases were argued and submitted. The habeas corpus case of Attorney VanScelver of California, the man wanted badly in that state, was reviewed by the court and submitted on a brief filed by his attorney. Sherift | Auble of Los Angeles Is firm in the convie- tion that his patience will be rewarded with victory and that he is destined to enjoy the company of Van back to California. A decision 1s expected tomorrow morning, to which time the court adjourned. One of the alieged victims of C. R. Bertram, the missing saloon keeper, who suddenly shook the dust of Lincoln from his feot last Saturday, 1s a young man named Rosenstock. He says that Bertram borrowed | from him $160 as ‘a short time loan. This | happened to be all the money possessed by him at the time. It Is Rosenstock's candidly expressed opinion that he was quite fortunate In not having more cash by him at the time Bertram negotlated the loan. As a sort of security and to reassure Rosen- stock, Bortram requested him to take charge of tho receipts of the place until he re- terned and to keep the same in his pock But the conscientious Roscnstock deposited them in a bank, and now finds himself let in for the whole amount of the loan because the real owners of the saloon attached every- thing in sight, bank account and all, Information has just reached the friends of Mrs. E. T. Shields, wife of the abscond- Ing dentist, to the effect that she has dis- covered her recreant spouse in Denver, and that they have mutually agreed to kiss and make up. Shields, it s understood, fs the man who a short time since sent his wife to a nelghboring town to use her good business judgment in selecting a location for him, and subsequently took advantage of her absence to depart from the city, leaving a note advising her to return to her parental home in Tllinois, as they could no longer live together. On giving the bond he was presented with his liberty, and now stren- uously claims that he is & vietim of perscu- tion at the hands of parties whom he de- clines to name. The intelligence was received today of the suiclde at the Norfolk insane asylun of Mrs. Shaw, mother of Mr. Arthur W. Shaw of this eity. A fair and apparently healthy specimen of the heloderma horridum, or “Gila monster,” was received today at the geological depart- ment of the State university. This is the largost and ugliest lizard found in the United | States. Its bite is deadly and its favorite menu consists principally of bofled eggs. The monster reptile was enclosed in two thick- nesses of wire netting as a probable pre- caution againt Inquisitive postal clerks, ex- press messengers and baggage men. As a further precaution the box was attached to upright supports by which it could be safely handled. Its colors are marked and brilliant, this particular specimen having adopted the well kunown insignia of Princeton college, orange and black. In experimenting with this reptile Prof. Shuefeldt was once bitten. In describing its venomous nature he says that it 1s only by the most skilled medical as- sistance that a person once bitten can be saved. A new wire cage has been buflt at the university for the reptile, and he will be kept on exhibition at the state museum. Mary Sturey s suing the Rock Island Rail- road company for $3,090. The trial is before a jury in Judge Tibbet's court. She alleges in” her petition that the company has dam- aged her property that amount, said property consisting of a lot in Houtz Place addition. She avers that If the road would only keep its track in one place she might endure the annoyance with some degree of complacency, but it is being continually shifted from one point on her land to another. Defendants claim that the lot is not worth over $1,500. EXETER, Neb., Nov. 7.—(Special)—Tho funeral Monday of Ben Merritt, the man und dead in a livery rig at Atlantle, Ta., Wwith a bullet in his head, was held here today. It was the largest ever held fn Fillmore county. The procession was over two and a quarter miles long. The Anclent Order of United Workmen and the Modern Woodmen of America lodges had charge of his burlal. Exeter, Fairmont and Geneva lodges were very largely represented. It is now fully conceded that he was murdered. He left hera the Thursday morn- ing before he was found dead, with ahout $260, but when found had only o few dollurs in change on his person. His own revolver was found at his home in a bureau drawer. It is belleved the detectives are on the track of the murderer, and Lave located him in this county, Fillmore.
