BIRMINGHAM, Ala, Oect. 17.—It re- ported on authority thoroughly rellable that the Southern Railway = company, having failed to fain control of the Cincinnatl Southern, I8 seeking a western outlet through St. Louis. It {s sald arrangements are quietly going on_looking to the purchase of the Southern, Paducah, Tennessee & Ala- bama_rallroad, which has been completed to Florence, Ala. The scheme also Ine cludes the purchase of the Birmingham, Sheffield & Tennessee River road, which extends from Florence to within forty miles of Birmingham, and Is soon to be com- pleted to this city. These roads are on the market. With them completed and the connections afforded at Paducah the Southern will have a western outlet. The new route will develop a rich mineral country and also create a new line from St. Louls to the Gulf, if the Southern buys the Moblle & Birmingham when that road fis sold at receiver's sale. This slight change in his condition gave physicians hope for his re= covery, - SHE LED HIM TO JAIL, ts Unsatisfuctory Results from Writing Nozes to a White Girl, Edgar Stanley, a young colored man, was put in Jail yesterday for ‘“disorderly con- duct,” his offense consisting of writing notes to a young lady of the opposite color, asking for a personal acquaintance. For three years and over Miss Rosa Brad- shaw has been employed at Bennett's store as a clerk. Stanley saw her, and, as he says, fell in love with her. When Miss Bradshaw received a loving epistie signed by Stanley she turned it over to her father, and a quiet investigation showed that the writer was a negro. At first Mr. Bradshaw was inclined to go end get a club and go after the negrog but the letter was referred to Chief Detective Haz He took it upon himself, at the request of the father, to answer the letter. The chief detective s not an expert at writing love letters, but ho finally ground out a letter that made Stanley’s heart leap for joy Another letter was sent to Miss Bradshaw by her dusky admirer, and then a gray-coated mail carrier brought to Stanley a note mak- ing a date for a meeting. The time was 3 o'clock yesterday after- noon and the place Sixteenth and Cags strects, In the note making the date the writer directed Stanley to wear a boquet in his buttonhole. After considerable urging on Hazo's part Miss Dradshaw was induced to g0 to the corner of Sixteenth and Ca streets at the hour named. On time, alo came Stanley with a huge red rose on his coat lapel. The young lady bowed to the negro, and as he stepped up to salute her Haze and Dempsey took him in tow. Miss Bradshaw then boarded a passing car and returned to her desk at the store. Stanley was 50 surprised that he could not speak for awhile. When he regained his vocal powers he denied any intention to do wrong. Miss Bradshaw is an estimable young lady and bears an excellent reputation.
