Sl SR VAN LEUVEN PENSION FRAUD, Further Prosecutions to He Undertaken in Connection with Swindles WASHINGTON, Oct. 12.—Steps will be taken by the pension bureau to mete out punishment to the remaining members of the boards of pension examiners involved in the Van Leuven frauds. Indictments against veral of the physicians have already been returned. It has been found that one of those involved in the frauds, Dr. Pegg, is dead, and prosecution of anothe. has been owing to advanced age, and prob ably ili-balanced mind. There were five boards involyed in the corrupt methods, and several members of these yet remain {o be prosecuted, prebably half a dozen, The action against them will probably be based on sections 5,501 and 5,541, The report of Special Examiner Waite and his corps of assistants now at work about Dubuque will be forwarded to the Department of Justice Wwith a recommendation for prosecution, and the department will call the attention of the district attorneys who have jurisdiction, to the cases with the purpose of securing in- dictments. The Van Leuven frauds are re- garded as among the most important that have been under investigation, though not involving as much perjury and forgery as the cases filcd by Attorney Bown Moore of Buffalo, now serving a_sentence. The num- ber of ‘cases filed by Van Leuven probably reaches 700 or 800, and about one-third of these have been Investigated.
