iy ERGIAL AND FINANCIAL @rain Markets Had a Tempestuous Time of it Yesterday, ~ WHEAT HAD A STRONG START GENERALLY b fl Had Scarcely Got Under Way, However, * When the Orders of the Short P Bellers Were Turned Loose. CHICAGO, Oct. 5, —The grain market had a tempestuous time today. The reported death £ Of the czar, a héavy New York faflure, light " fecelpts and light clearances mixed them- #elves and the traders up badly, and fluctua- tions were sharp and numerous. At the fin- " Ish December wheat was %c lower, May corn Uinchanged and May oats e lower. Provi- slons declined moderatly. The small local receipts of grain and firmer markets abroad gave the wheat market a Atrong start. It had scarcely got under way, however, when Pardridge and Leeming and other commission houses whose principal Clients are short sellers opened their flood g:e- and swamped the early buyers. Decem- , Which started at from bi%e to 64%c bid, and with a sale or two at 54%c, was knocked down to 63%c in the course of fifteen min- utes. The short sellers had but a few min- utes of triumph at that time. The people Who handle cash grain reported buyers of their goods at an early hour of the session. The reports from the northwest were con- firmatory of what was telegraphed yesterday regarding the falling off in farmers’ deliveries at Interfor stations, but the decreased move- ment was generally ascribed to the rainy weather and consequent bad state of the Toads. The report that the czar of Russia was dead was a matter which tangled up legitimate influences for a short time until the rumor was killed and the czar restored to his family and subjects. The price recov- ered equally from its decline and soon sold up to bdlo for December, May keeping step in the advances and declines of from Sc to -16¢, more or less than that. The strength it corn at this time helped wheat. The fafl- ure of a New York stock house was the sig- &" for general sclling again by the local pers, under which the price dropped again %c for December. A few buying orders at the decline quickly changed the feeling of the crowd once more. The price on the last named advance reached 543%c. Primary mar- ket receipts were light at 748,621 bu., which Included two days' arrivals at £t. Louis. To offset that the Atlantic port clearances were om{ equal in wheat and flour to 220,000 bu. including 10,000 bu. at New Orleans. Clos- ing cables were firm and higher from Liver- pool and Berlin, but rather easier from Parls. The last turn of the whirligig market was downward, The bears took more comfort out of the Wall street failuro than the bulls 0. 3, delivered, $340: No, 3, 82e: No. 2 W@awe; No. 1 white, 3SaaNe; truck Bgsse; track white, 8@ 0c. — Options steady, ruled quist and elosed dull; Jan- uary elosed ‘%o, nominali May, T@Slc, ‘,'J d at 37%0; October olosed at 3%e, ndmina ovember, 33%G3%e, closed at 33%0; December, BE@ %0, cloasd at BNe. The Bvening Post says: With no great show of activity, the stock market con- tinued today to manifest its returning confi- dence. Nearly all the prices moved up slowly from the start, the gains in some of the granger stocks being cohsiderable. For- clgn brokers did little, though American stocks went above our lgvel In the London market before this market opened. There wero some faint echoes of the war scare in the form of bold and transparent dispatches that the czar was dead, but this was all. The Evening Post's London cablegram says: The stock market opened firm today but quickly gave wa on continental selling, accompanied by rumors of the death or fatai sickness of the czdr. Neither report was confirmed, but the latter statement is gener- ally belleved. ~Americans. were firm the greater part of the day, owing to support on the New York side and the scarcity of the stocks here. So far this week receipts uf cattle have been nearly 7,000 heavier then last, while hog supplies have fallen oft about 3,000 head and sheep nearly 2,000 head. Late arrivals on Thursday swelled the re- celpts to 8,647 head, Which was tho largest number of cattle ever recefved here in any one day. The largest previous run was 7,786 head, which number arrived nearly a year ago, on October 23, 1893, A good share of the cattle that cama in late on Thursday were on today's market, so that, with the 4,900 fresh cattle there were over 7,000 on sale today when the market opened. Nearly everything was direct from the range and there was an unusual scarcity of beef for so large a number of cattle. Conditions were all against the sellers and they had to ac- cept a very material decline in prices. With such ample offcrings buyers could afford to be indifferent, and in the face of a decline of from §0c to G0c in Chicago this week they were inclined to be very bearish. Bids and sales were all of from 10c to 15 lower than Thursday, making a decline since Mon- day of from 25c to 40c. Of course, the under grades, being most abundant, suftered the most, but even the more desirable grades did not escape. It was a dull, weak market throughout and nothing like a complet: clear- ance was made. Cows also shared in the general depres- sfon. Including holdovers, there must have been nearly 1,000 loads on sale, and, although the demand was quite active, both from local and outside butchers, most sellers were pe fectly satisfied if able to work off their hold- ings at within from 10c to 15c of Thursday's prices. Calves were in good demand and firm, notwithstanding the liberal offerings Bulls, oxen and stags generally sold at a shade under Thursday’s quotations. The market was simply oversupplied with stockers and feeders, s0 that buyers were able to shade prices somewhat, in spite of the continued active demand from all sources Good to chofce feeders are quotable at from $2.70 to $3.15; fair to good, from $2.40 to $2.70, and common grades from §2.25 down. T 218 HOGS—Receipts fail to show any Improve- ment either to quantity or quality. To- day's run fell about a thousand short of Thursday, or a week ago, and while there ‘were a few very good heavy hogs on sale, the proportion of poor light and underweight Stuff, was aboyt as large as ever. Packers again had it all' their own way, and only the smallness of the supply prevented prices from going considerably lower. On account of the lower markets east and the ample supplies there, shippers are doing very little at western markets, and only the good fresh meat demand and the light receipts are re- sponsible for the maintenance of values. The market opened about steady, with falr to very good mixed hogs selling at from $4.75 to $5.10. Cholce heavy stuff sold up to $5.30 and poor light mixed and rough stuft down to $4.50. Pigs and stock hogs were not In very active request, bt they.sold about as usual down around §2.50 to $4.50, according to welght and quality. The market weak- ened off as the morning advanced and clos- ing sales were pretty close to a nickel lower than Thursday. Falr to good mixed hogs sold very largely today at from $4.76 to $5.10, as against $4.85 to $6.10 on Thursday and $5.10 to $6.26 a week ago. Representative sales: No. Av. 8h. Pr.
