DUN'S Retail AND BRADSTREET'S "rade Shows a Considerable Inorease Over Last Year, NOT UP TO AVERAGE YEARS, HOWEVER Wholesale Trade Orders 10 Ma o Continnes Large, but facturers Are Fulling Depression of Farm Pro- ducts Having Tts Effects, NEW YORK, Sept. 28.—R. G. Dun & Co. weekly review of trade, which issues tomor- row, will say: Special inquiry has been made this week at all commercial centers regarding the state of retail trade. Wide diversity appears in different trade The main facts disclosed are: Marked Improv ment within the past month and a consid- erable excess over the business ¢ ago, particularly in the necessuries of life But, second, it appears that the volume of wrade at present is on the whole consider- ably less than in a normal year, at most points, and in the more important trades is one a y pparently about 2 per cent smaller than in September, 1882 KEvidence of continued fmprovement in wholesale trade and manu fucture does not appear this week. There are large distribution orders given some time ago, but new business going to the manufacturers fs everywhere slackening. The completion of orders for replenishment of stocks leaves a narrower demand, and it 1s vet too early further orders. The depression in prices of farm products will have some influence, Un- precedented records have been male i cot- ton and wheat, though as to wheat only in contracts for future delivery, in which the prices are the lowest ever made. The available stocks are about 15,000,000 bushels greater than a year ago a ern re- ceipts for the week were ushels, against §,191,004 bushels last Year, and since Auyzust 1 51,000,000 bushels, agaiist 38,0,000 bushels last year. The Atlantic exports for the week and since August 1 have been about a third smalier than last year, but the fall in prices during the week has been 1.75 cents. "Cotton on the spot |s lower at 6.44 cents than at any other time since 1849, and quotations then did not mean what the do now, while the option which was quoted at 6.4 nts 18 below all | previous record. Even at the close the fall for the week fs one-quarter. An estimate of 0,600,000 ales, minimum, this y has inflienced = market, but 'would receive less attention if stocks in sight were not heavy, while all agres that this crop is likely to exceed the world's records of American cotton. It is icouraging that the speculation in corn has broken, and the price has fallen & cents ess gloomy e than those of the department havir ned general creden It 1% now supposed that the yield 1s not far from much in fal 1,600,000.000 bushels, which will compel economy in Teeding, but speculation pork_has also broken and the price has while lard has declined of demand and t age But Tittle below. the Jow mer pig 1s weaker at §11 at an impression th shows a shrink s quoted today st this year Pittsburg of B t excess prod must cause a f decline until [ow prices are made teel rails. Billets, structural forms and nails are a shade weaker and in eastern markets competition of works to get business tends to destroy profits. There is more demand for sheets and for bar in small lots reported from Chicago, and for coke plg, though plates and boiler tubes are weaker. The boot and ghoe manufacturers continue to lead others In comparative activity, and shipments from for the month have been 308,907 against 222,608 last ye 328, 106 > few and small, f mount to only 728 the week's of which 285, were manufacturing and $2,575,112 ding concerns. The failires during the week have been 235 in (he United States against 334 last vear, and - ada, against thirty-thre BRADSTRE EVIEW, Moderate Keaction from the Recent In- cronse in Trade, NEW YORK, Sept. 25.—Bradstrect's to- morrow will say: The fealure of the gen- al trade throughout the country {s found in moderate remction d ng the week, more particularly in the volume of purchases of staples west, where trade has n quite active, and at eastern points, the week failing to show any upward movement of note in this line, and the check to business south, together 'with damage to the rtice and orange Leading jobbers at dis- tributing pol hich for ‘a month past have reported relatively mos! vorably con- cerning {he @ of business-Baltimore, St. Louls, Nashville and Chict ified“advices as to activity and the bright outlook. Wheat has mad nother “'lowest’’ price, and corn and oats I both declined, Sugar and coffee record lower figure: and another lowest price for cotton has had an unfavorable inflence on the tone of busines at important southern markets, particularly in view of the activity of (he receipts of that staple. Bessemer plg iron sales show loss of 2 cents and steel billets almost as wuch. Standard brands of forge irons, west and south, show like depressions, and the trade admits production has exceeded consumption. The conspicuously irregulur price is for’ lumber, It being fairly acti but low at Minneapolis, but stiffer at St Louis, in contrast with advices from Chica- g0 and elsewhere. Leather is fairly firm, and in distribution dry goods, shoes, mil- linery and notions lead, Exports of wheat (flour included as wheat) from both coasts, United States and Canada, this week, have en off some. amounting to 2, X' bush- against 3.5 000 bushels 000 hushels last in the same w ago. Two years ago the total was 4,060,000 bushels; three years ago, 3,105,000 bushels, and four years ago, 158,000 bushels. Lon- don wool sales have proved disappointing to those who predicted or anticipated heavy purchasing for the American market and a rapid advance in prices. On this side quotations are off 1 cent, fleeces particularly being weak. There is a’better trade in ter- ritories and Australian. Distribution of dry goods from eastern points has declined on the slackening at all points of all dema and Little confiden pliaced by buyers in the higher prices :ottons due to strikes of operatives, and print cloths are weaker.
