COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Wheat Was Irclined to Pe Strong Yester- day on Emaller Receipt: THAT CEREAL OPENED RATHER FIRM Corn Averaged Firm, Although There Were Soft Spots Which Appeared to Sug- gest a Fighting Chance to the HBears CHICAGO, Sept. 12.—Wheat was Inclined to be strong today on smaller roceipts, but the bears dealt out wheat freely and em- ber closed unchanged. Corn closed Yc lower for May, but cats wound up with May %c higher, and provisions closed at slight ad vances ¢ Wheat opened firm at a upon yesterday's closing price, was probably due to the moderate here and in the northwest and to the steadi- ness of the cables.December started at it was immediately attacked by son the most p minent traders id it gradually weakened until had rubbed off its epening values, It roze again to the opening quotations, and about an hour om the ¢ from e to pald for it. Est mated receipts for tomorrow were quite 1'ght, 160 cars, and were an ald in sustaining prices toward th: close, December finishing ut 57%ec. v Corn averaged firm, & ft spots which appei Ing chance to the bears. early that some corn bought by a prominent commission house: would be for e during the forenoon, and some selling which actu ally occurred was thought t- be the corn in question, but it was afterward found to be no part of the rather important long tone referred to, for the same commission which bought yesterday took more The market started strong, but there was suflicient realizing sales from tiered longs 10 caus: temporaty depression, and a decline of about Sc from the highe: price made near the upening. May started at from 56%c to 56%c, sold for a time at around AN touched 6563%c for a moment, declined to B5%e, recovered again to 56%c, dropped back to from 0B6%c to and at the end was at 56c. Business was active in spots and dull for much longer intervals. The oats market was fairly active and higher. The movement of corn had some- thing to do with the firmer feeling, but th re was also independent strength vigible outside of that. Good buying orders were recelved from the outside, and the disposition in gen- eral was to take in instead of dispose of stuff. Schwartz-Dupee & Co., and F. G. Logan were the principal traders on the purchasing #ide. May started steady at from 35%e to 36%ec, sold down to 36c, back again to 36%¢, where it closad. The provision market was fairly easy at the opening, but the demand at the slight decline which augmented the trading were so go°d that sell>rs soon with- drew their offers, and prices quickly recov ered the first loss. The feeling became quite strong after that and prices rose until pork had gained 17%c on the lowest price. Jan uary stood at the close only 2 under its best price for the day and 10c higher than it closed yesterday. Lard in the end gained 2%c and ribs 5c Freights steady, charters to Buffalo 1%c for wheat, 1'%ic for corn and 1%c for oats | and to Port Huron 1%c for wheat.
