TH[‘ OMAHA DA!LY BFE i’RII)AY S PTPMBFR 7. 1894, COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL | Wheat Steadicd from the Tired Fe:ling Near the Clcse, OTHER MARKE S SYMPATHIZED LARG LY Corn Took Ita Cue from Wheat and Tos ward the xeitedly Strong—Oats Met with = Fale Sale. ose it Meea CHICAGO, Sept. 6.—Wheat steadied from fts tired feeling near the close today and with good buying on the spurt finished %e higher for December, The other markets sympathized and corn closed 1%c higher for May., September oats gained e and pro- vislons closed slightly higher all around. It wee a dull day at the start in wheat, as It was also in all the other speculative orowds. Nothing especially new or strik- ing occurred during the forenoon, and con- sequently the speculators had ample time to thresh over the old straw. The possibili- ties In the direction of substituting wheat _ for corn for stick was about the only thing that kept the price from dropping oft in view of the almost total cessition of trading during what is generally the busiest time cf the day. There was a spurt of activity on it becoming known that a well known crop expert, who has given his particular atten- tlan to the cendition of the northwestern spring wheat crop, estimated the total yield for the three states of North Dikota, South Dakota and Miunesota at not to exceed 60,000,000 bu., bas'ng his estimate on the mctual threshing returns. Then a tone of confidence quickly supplan‘'ed the carly feel- ing of uncertsinty and the price of December, which had been confined all the afterncon to A range of from 56%c¢ o §7%e, rose with con- siderablo vim in the trading to 58%c, and closed at 583%c. Today it was corn that took its cue from wheat.” Some of the big local shorts wh have for a week made such a poor attempt at menufacturng a bear market out of a sorely mangled crop report in the west changed their tactics, The market was ex- tremely dull until 12 o'clock, when it be- came quite active, December was at no time other than very firm and toward the close it became excitedly streng. — September rose from 57c, sold off to 567%c, but after- ward rtose to and closcd at 68y May Kept very close to 55c until within an hour of the close, when It rose in quick jumps until it reached 56%c, and closed at 56 Cash oats met with a fair sale and were steady o a shade firmer. The strcng fe ing extended into the speculative crowd, with a good dispositicn to sell, and buying orders were quiet. Prices were chiefly in- fluenced by the movement of the corn mar- ket. September at the start was e higher than it closed yesterday, at 30 Tater it fell to 29%c, and at noon it was again selling at 80c, closing at 30%c. Provisions closed farly firm, but the packers had more than enough for sale t supply the demand. The afterncon strength in grain caused those who sold earlier to bid for ‘some of their short stuff, and the clo ing prices were substantially the highest of the d The January deliveries were purely sympathetic and moved up with Al conditions showed no fmportant market ¢ September, B4 September No. 1 Win aliout 2o under tendency from this tis rupposed, will be toward a the premium A wheat lest new wheat 's getting In altion ty Flour was_ fiem. | with wheat, and millors ased $1.20 1o § paten 10 $2.25 for bakers, The produ was .00 bble, for the tw four Shipments were 34,635 bbis. rowing of of the ea OMANA G AL MARKETS, Condition st The mark ste of Tr de and ple and Faney n country produce remaina about Quatationy uce. dy CTTER 144 ™ stock 15 e to i separator e Y—OId hens, {lg@ic: roosters, | chickens, 5e; ducks, hen tu wobblers, 0c; 0ld geose, A Vrairle chickens, younk, per dot., $2.75 pratiie chickens, old, doz., $2.000 i grouse, young, per doz.. & W grous old,” per doz., 2,00 ducks, blue wing teal per dog. An active trad- ing was in progress from the opening to the close, but it was mainly on the bear side, and the greater number of the stocks traded in show a decline on the day’s transactions ranging from % to 2% per cent, the heavest loss being made in Distilling. Ru- mor was a large factor of the speculation nd was used by the bears to depreciate the shares of the two leading industrial proper- tles, Sugar was attacked under cover of a report and at the next week's directors’ meeting the dividend on the common stock would be reduced. This stcry found some believers and precipitated upon the market @ large amount of stock. The room traders also old the shares, and within the first quarter of an hour Sugar had broken 2 per cent to 1024 The lower raunge of brought in some buyers and the rumored divi- dend reduction was fcund to have no founda- tion, and being denied by the trast brokers, a steady recovery took place, which was fol lowed by fractional reactions, and rallied until after delivery hour, when a brisk buy- Ing movement was crganized on what was believed to be a ‘streight tip, that the regular dividend would be declared next Tuesday. One takes a sleeper on the Elkhorn at Long Pine in the even- ing and the next morning at 7:30 he s called by the porter and finds himself just cpposite the hotels at Hot Springs. The hotel accommodations are ample for all tour- ists and sick persons for s to_come. They are well conducted and the charge reagonable. The place is destined to be a great summer resort. While the famous Arkansas hot springs, on account of Jhe mild climate, is a better place for invalids to g0 in winter time, the Dakota springs are far superior to the southern springs for about six months of the year. There Is everything to make life desirable arround the t, hotels procure their drinking water from a ge, clear, cold mountain spring of pure water, Their plunge bath, 200 feet long and fifty feet wide, with a natural temperature of 92, toboggan slides, spring boards, et is the finest in the world. We spent five of six hours a day in this bath without feel ing lassitude or chilliness, It is not lying in"an ordinary bath tub; you slide down the toboggan, ride a barrel, dive, and keep your blood in brisk circulation, and all of the organs of the body begin to work like an old clock after it has been cleaned and oiled up, and after a few days you develcp i appetite which is marvelous. The ele- tion is about 3,500 feet, high enough to get away from malaria and other bacterla, and not high enough to be oppressive. The pla urrounded by picturesque hills and mountains, covercd with beautiful evergreen A person getting up in the morning swimming for an hour, with genial friends climb some hill. Then, after finishing his breakfast, that he has eaten like a bear, he feels as if he wanted to vell with de. light. The place has mamy attractions and places of interest besides the spring Among the many, the wind cave. Battle mountain, Cascade’ springs and Bob's Hole are the chief. Tourists go out at 8:30 in the morning and return at 5 p. m. The cave I8 in the mountain and is supposed to cover about five miles square; it Is eight rooms deep, and as far as discovered there are ninety miles of passageway from room to room” within a circumference of twenty miles, The cave appears to breathe air like an animal. In the daytime, when the air s light and dry, the air rushis out, and in the evening. when the alr is more dense, it rushes in. It is so strong, whether going in or out, that it will blow out a candle, and tourists have all they can do to keep right side up while entering the cave, until they have gone in fifty feet; then every- thing fs quiet and ‘still. The (heory s t, as the air {s fresh and 50 feet deep and four miles from the mouth. About three miles from the ning there is a_large room called the arden of Eden. There is no evidence that Cain slew Abel on this particular spot, nor there any trace of the serpent and th fruit trees, but to say that this room is gorgeous I putting it too mild. The room is decorated by nature with the grandest display of sparkiing crystals, box work and other curious petrifications. Seeing it is the only way it can be appreciated. At a room called the Fallen Flats, the lowest point in the cave, the guide ordered all the light: put out, 'so that the party could see total darkness. It was a complete success, The guide said that when the lighis were put out the day before a voung fellow tried to kiss his sweetheart, but as she had lopped her head over in her mother's lap he kiss the old lady instead of the daughter. one would have known it had not mother said: “You have made a mistake, and the young man said: “1 know it The party sang “Swest Bve and Bye other hymns, and with lights in their ha one was reminded of knights and monks of old. No tourist should miss seeing the grandest and most curious cave on earth Battle mountain s about two and one-half miles from and 1600 feet higher than the springs, making it about 5,100 feet above the sea level. The air up there is nice and fresh and there scems to be plenty of it, but no one can get enough at one time to do him any good. The view from the peak is grand. It is said that the Sioux and Cheyennes had a fight up there and that the Sloux drove the Chevennes out of that count This sounded to us like a ghest story. for an intimate acquaintance with the Cheyenne Indians for vears has con- vinced us that nobody ever drove them any- where. The Cheyennes can be Killed, Iike at Fort Robinson in 1878 by the army, but that army or tribe of ns do not live that can force them tc leave a country. Cascade springs is about twelve miles from Hot Sprires. and, like Wind cave ¢ day by the tal- Ivho coach: are rem: able for great flow of water. The big geyser is said to throw out 1,600 gallons per minute. There others of less magnitude. but ily charged with mineral of all kinds ater may be good for curing diseases a physician there, and he rece it. No_ disea that the human rac e to could with stand the effects of that water. Our party drank some of it and we can all testify that it would get right after any discasc nd run it out of the country in threc hours. Unfortunately they have no other ter to drink, onlv this villainous stuff verything in that locality is petrified. We saw large trees lying around close to the springs, some four feet through, petrified into solid reck thing will prevent the few people who live there from being petri- fied, unless they are lined with per. “And I'll never Returning from the tween there and the ladies sald: “Ts not that th (hat the gentleman was telling u his mornng?’ We got out, and rough it was no ghost story, as there the hole. about twelve f about sixty feet deep.
