PROFIT SHARING IN PARIS. One Establishment Has Kept It Up for More than Fifty Years. The Parisian house painter and decorator, Leclaire, was born the son of a country shoemaker. After working in the flelds and as a mason’s boy, he arrived in Parls penni= less at the age of 17. He apprenticed him: to a house painter, and I ten years be a master. As soon as he had sec own footing in the trade, says the Pittsburg Dispateh, he turned his mind to improving the condition of those who worked in it. His first step was to seek a substitute for white lead, which he found injurious to theln health. This he succeeded in doing. Much impressed with the uncertainty of their posi= tion, he went on to find a system by which every man in his employment received as a bonus a part of the regular profits of his trade. For the regular and permancnt workmem he also established a mutual ald soclety, sup= ported at first by the voluntary contribus tions of members, but subsequently by the recelpt of another considerable portion of i profit. His workmen thus not only beéame partners in the business, but also accrued & large addition to their’ wages, as well as an ample provision for old age, sickness om accident. Between 1842 and 1572, when he dled a rich man, leaving $240,000, Leclaire had paid the sum of $220,000 in bonuses to his workmen, and in contribution to thels mutual aid or provident society. His busi= ness wias then carried on by two managing # partuers, chosen by the workmen cut of thein own number. It had a capital of $64,000, be= longing half to the managing partners and half to the mutual ald society The mutual aid ocicty owned & capital of $310,000, including its shares in the capital of the business. It had 105 members, bes sides fifty-one who were living upon thelm retired allowances. To the regular workman it secured large year,y bonuses upon his aggregate wages; all the advantag:s of an ordinary benefit club; a life pension of $240 per annum, payable on hix completing his 50th year of life and his twentieth year of work for the concern; one-half of his pens slon continued to his widow for life; a sum of $200 payable to his family at his deathy and the certainty that he, Jf Lie were disabled, and his family, If he were killed by an acels dent occurring In the course of his employs ment, would not be left without permaneny means of support.
