T ot K i COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL | @ood Buying Gave the Wheat Market a Stead Tone SHORTS BID SEPTEMBER CORN There Was n ¢ Men pod Demand Adva hasers Was an During the of ¥ mpe Class ctant Fuctor, cme ports of heavy wheat murket a cember closed with a gain of corn was bid up by shorts, higher. September oats and provisions closed with The wheat market was a the opening than it closed noon, but very quickly it turned in the other direction and advanced 3c over the lowest price made at the moment of openinig. There was @ good demand from elevator men for September during the advance, and, in fact, the rise was due principally to that class of buying. Armour & Co.'s brokers were th most conspicuous bidders for September dur- g the advance re d to and they were not at that time selling any st their purchases, Later, when the risc with a gain so immaterial, Armour & commenced o sell. The northwestern celpts were heavy, numbering 807 Minneapolis and Duluth. The opening price of December was 56%c, and, after advancing to B7%c, It got back again to the opeuing figures and 56%c was the trading price again about 11:30 v'clock. Closing cables indicated some further improvement in the forelgn market and there was a good demand re- ported from abroad for spr wheat. Towards the close prices rose again (0 @ point higher than lad previously been reached. December sold up to 57%c and closed with sellers at 53%c. Corn was strong and § urgently wanted than any other deliver although (he day’s receipts were 411 cars, as compared with yesterday's estimates of 370 The advices from the interior of this state are to the effect that the week will see the end of (he froe deliveries of corn. The bulk of the receipts now being received are from Ilinofs and are sent to fiil sales for Septem- ber delivery. The shorts fought the move- ment for a short time today, but when it rose to about 53c, from around 52%e at the open- Ing, some of the shoris became satisfied that discretion was the better part of valor and began to buy. The market easily rose an- other %c on that extra demand. September wag not 80 easy to buy and rose from 55%¢, near the opening, to about half an hour from the close. Business was brisk in twenty-minute spots and dull for the greater part of the time. The situation, as regards the September shorts, became distress- ing as the session neared its close, and bic was paid for some, with 563c the current price in the end. May closed at its highest point for the day and weck, 63%c. Cash oats were wanted, and, as a good supply was to be had, a fair business was transacted. Values on all varieties were up a trifle. The speculative crowd was .equally as active, influenced by higlher cash prices, the strength in corn and continued good buying orders from the country. September sold from 29%c to 30c, where it closed Provisions were again firm until near the close, when there was some realizing by September longs in_pork and a lessening of the buying pressure from shorts in that article and in September ribs. The January deliveries were wanted to fill orders from out- gide and they closcl strong, but, as a rule, at some reduction from the highest prices of the day. Compared with yesterday's close, prices for September, the following changes are noted: Pork, 1%c lower; lard, 10¢, and ribs, 2lc higher. In January deliveries the following changes are noted: Pork, 10¢; lard, 12%c; and ribs, 7%c higher. The leading futures rung d as follow | High._| | Clowe. The market on cow stuff was very slow and lower, The offerings were large, it being estimated that there was as high s eighty cars in the yards. With so much to select from the buyers were inclined to be rather particular and were in no great hurry to fiill thier orders. The supply of stockers and feeders was hardly so large as on yesterday, but there was enough to fully satisfy the demand. The market was rather slow and easier. The extent of the demand for stock cattle is a surprise to most deai- rs. It was expected that the short corn crop would cut oft the demand for stockers and fecders, but, on the contrary, in some sections it appears to have stimulated the demand. A great many farmers ar: buying stock cattle to put in their stalk fields, The hooks of the Stock Yards company show that there were more stockers and feed:rs shipped into the country in July than there was in July a year ago. While the figures for the prisent month are not complete, it looks as if there would be some gain over August of last year. Representative sales: DRES BEEF. Av. Pr. No. Av. Pr. December v, $.0%; cleared, centals, Dull; 61,668 —_—— THINK IT 18 JOE WILLIAMS, Omaha OMcers Believe that They Have at Last Located Him. Sherift Drexel left for Primghar, la., yes- terday after the negro who is supposed to be Joe Willlams, the notorious poisoner for whom the Omaha police have been looking for two years past. Information has been received at the sherifi’s office which leaves no reasonable doubt in their minds but that the Primghar suspeet Is really the much- wanted Joe. The crime with which Willlams is charged was committted December 28, 1592. Wil- liams was on terms of intimacy with a fam- 1ly named Ewing in the northern part of the city, and had sustained criminal relations with the daughters of Ewing. On this ac- count some feeling was engendered, and when it was found that poison had been put in the coffee drank by the family on the morning named, Willilams was suspected of being the eulprit. Albert Ewing, the young- est child, dled on the same day from the effects of the drug, and as the evidence of Williams' guilt became conclusive, he disap- peared, and since then has eluded all at- capture.
