COMMERCIAL AND FINA) All the Bpeculative Markets Were Weak | Yesterday, Bspeo’ally Wheat. FLUCTUATIONS WERE FRIQUENT EARLY Iand Being of the Market Stocks Most of the News at Mearish Character, Started Out Fasy aud Bonds. CHICAGO, Aug. 24.—All the speculative markets were weak and wheat was the weak- est of the lot. What the country :aillers do not want leaves enough, it I8 claimed, to supply all the forelgn demand, with a re pectable surplus besides to swell the visible supply, and that feature of the situation caused depression. Wheat and corn closed %e lower, oats %c lower and provisions mod- erately below yesterday's value. Wheat was quiet at lower prices, with the trade mainly local andfluctuations were fre- quent.and confined within a ange. The feeling was easier, the most of the news at hand being fn the main of a beari.' chars ter. The market started out easy, with %e decline, at from 54%c to G4%e, with the trade very light, there being a general lack of out- side orders, which was one of the features. The price graduaily rec %e to %, rallied from some and closed with September at 54%c. The lowes cables and more favorable weather abroad were influences which started the bullish sentiment and the market was fur- ther depressed by the largo arrivals In the northwest, which was over double those of last year, and were said to consist of three- quariers of new wheat. Corn was weak. There were reports of a likelihood of an increase in the receipts in the near future, which received partial con- firmation in the estimate of 350 carloads for Chicago toworrow. Receipts today exceeded yesterday's estimates by 210 cars. Business in the pit was very dull. May opened at 62%¢, or %e lower than it closed yesterday It sold speringly at 521c, and. on the re celpt of the estimate of tomorrow’s receipts it dropped to 51%c. September from 63%e declined to 53%ec, then recovered to 5dthe, atter which it again s0ld down to 53%c, re- acting to the close at 54l4c. The stop or- ders that were expected to become operative when May should be depressed to 52c id not materialize, The session in oats was not marked with any large trade, but a fair business was transacted, notwithstanding that loeal traders were about the only active specu- lators. Prices were lower, principally in sympathy with corn. September started e under yesterday's closing price, at 30%c, and #0ld down to 80c. The close ehowed the mar- ket at 30%c bid, after having touchad 29%c. The provision market started firm and a shade over yesterday's closing vrices, on account of receipts of only 16,000 hogs at the yards. The weakness which developed in corn and wheat caused provisions to sympa- thize, and they left off at some decline as compared with last prices yesterday. LINSEED— Trial cker and The men are barbers and one Alght last month they went down into the burnt district to have a *‘time.” After drinking more or less Third ward booze, Root and Deruse became engaged (n a fight, which wound up at the side entrance of Martin Shields’ saloon, where Decker and Root were seriously cut by Deruse, they claim. seems to have been a slick attempt to ru~h this case through yesterday morning and ge (he defendant free. The case was set unii August by Judge Berka, but yesterday morning Chief Detective Haze came into court and said that all the parties concerned were ready for trial. The case was called up and it was found that the most important witnesses for the state were not present and when they were summoned they claimed that they had received no notice to be in court ai all, and fully understood that the case would not come up untll August 28 Haze is al- leged to have claimed that all the witnesses had been notified, but the court officer, whose duty it Is to serve summons, sald that he had received no notice that the case was ready for a hearing. wnd comsequently did not serve the subpoenaes. The attention of Chief Seavey was called to the circumstances and he was in court all forenoon taking notes of the manner In which the case was being conducted. Assistant County Attorney Day said that he had agreed to try the case be- cause a_brother of the defendant was in the clty and wanted to go home last night. He thought that the brother wanted to hear the trial and then If possible give a bond for Deruse’s release pending trial In the district court. —~— Oregon Kidney Tea cures troubles.
