The New York quotations were quite closely all day and pla 1 an fmpor- tant part in the course of prices here. After the first advance a reaction occurred, due some to the break In the east and the sell- ing here by prominent local professionals, but rallicd again on the very fair exports and the falling off xome in the receipts at the primary markets, A cargo of S7,000 bu. was inspected in arriving from Toledo, and reports of another 100,000 bu. being in the harbor, which would appear in tmor: row's receipts. The export clearane ot wheat and flour were fair and aggregate 416,000 bu. of wieat, of which 69,000 bu. was In flour. There was no fresh business reported at New York, but twelve lcads were reported taken for export at Baltimor It was rumored that there wes some business golng Here today, but no particulars g ven Su . G Corn was less active, with fluctuations con- fined within narrower limits. The feeling continued rather nervous and unsettled, but the undertone was rather more bearish and offerings, while not large, were more general. { Apparenily there was more disposition to fayor the’ short side. The market acted as though the country had liquidated pretty freely and was now holding off buying, awaiting a still further break: Local profes- slonals sold moderate quantities, and in some instances where western speculators had se- cured good profits, they were buying again on a smaller scale. The weather indication was for showers in Indiana and Illinois, fair and cooler in lowa, and Missourl fair; Ne braska fair and cooler and Kansas fair, with southerly winds. The aclivity in oats was resumed again after yesterday's lay off, and not only was the market lively, but considerable business was transacted. The corn market continued to rule prices in oats and the easier feeling was_entirely in sympathy with corn. The range for September was Jc. Provisions were active, opening firm on higher live hog prices, but soon declining on liberal offerings. A good demand developed at the decline and prices advanced, but the market again declined, reacting at the finish and closing steady. Burlington Att n- tlon Yestorduy EW YORK, Aug. 17.—The speculative eye fastened on Burlington & Qui from the opening of business this morning until midday. The movement of the market was largely dependent upon that stock. The meeting of the directors in Boston to take action on the dividend, and until the a nouncement was made that they had de- clared their regular dividend, the market was irregular and in many cases took a downward course. For half an hour between 10 and 11 o'clock the market was upward, but Quring the rest of the morning depression prevailed. Burlington, which had receded per cent to 73% and advanced to 743, dropped 1% per cent, though the grangers declined from 3 to % per cent and the in- dustrials from % to % per cent. General Elcctric and Tobacco were excentions, the former selling up 1% per cent from the low point of the morning, and the latter % per cent from yesterday's closing sales. The true fact of the declaration of the regular 13§ per cent about 12:15 o'clock, and was the signal for the beginning of a strong buying movement, well distributed throughout the active list, which resulted in an advance of 3% per cent in Burlington, 1% per cent in Rock Island, 14 per cent in St. Paul and Missourl Pacific. Northwestern, with selling orders from Chi- cago, broke to 106%, a decline of 23 per cent from the highest point of the day, in sympathy with Distilling. A slight reaction oceurred in other shares. In the lugs @ decidedly strong tone prevailed. sp-culation closed strong, and prices, com- pared with yesterday's closing figures, were from % to 8 per cent higher. Distilling lost 234 per cent on the day and United States Leather preferred 1% per cent. Sugar fluc- tuated rather unusually, closing at yester- day's figures, The bond market was strong all day.
