Markel's Walter Girls Strike. J. B. Markel, general manager of the eating houses along the line of the Unjon Pa= cific, Is experiencing considerable trouble with his femals help, dining room girls and lunch counter waitresses refusing (o wear the natty caps provided by the manages ment for their adornment. They have no fault to find with the gowns, but the caps are their particular av:rsion, and so pros nounced has their opposition become that at several places the girls have gone out on a strike. At Ogden the girls in the dining room have served notics on Mr. Markel that they will not wear the caps, and in conse- quence new girls are now cnroute to take the places of thos> who refuse to comply with the conditions of the department. In all, some twenty giris have tken issue with Mr. Markel, and their places are being filled as rapidly possible. At Green' River, Rawlins, North Platte and other points: the costumes are worn with much grace, and the favorable comments heard are satisfactory to the young ladies, in some cases additional orders for duplicate costumes having been sent in. 1t is Mr. Markel's determination to uni- form his help, and whenever a girl refuses to wear the unif:rm provided her place will be supplied as rapidly as possibl At Pocatello the girls went out in a body when they saw the caps, and scme dificuity was erienced in filling their places, but meals ve been served regularly notwithstanding tho strike. Surprises Along the Elkhora Valley. Crop conditions at this time are fraught with partiular signficance and railroad of- ficials have dittle else to talk about, 8o abe solutely dull Is it in railroad circles. The Elkhorn, however, is probably less hard hit than any of the trunk lines centering in Omaha. ~There will be a liberal percentage of crops along the Elkhorn valley as far as Norfolk, and possibly as far as Neligh. Then through Holt, Rock and a portion of Brown county the crops are badly injured, wheat being almost a total failure, as well as the hay crop. But what is most surprising, in the western half of Brown county and in portions of Cherry, Sheridan, Dawes and Sioux counties they have had a fair suf- ficiency of rain, the wheat crop hefng good, the corn crop promises fair and the vegetable crops are splendid, ' with sugar beets a specialty in both Dawes and Sloux counties, several hundred acres being planted to beets, which are in finer condition than in’ any other county in the state. The same condi- tion substantially obtains in Box Butte county. The surprising feature of this con- dition is that the drouth in the,southern portion of the state has had little effect upon the northern portion, rains having been gen- eral, even into the Black Hills. In con- sequence of these conditions there Is con- siderable Immigration into the counties men= tioned, prospective settlers not being willing to go elsewhere. Rates for the Big Spectacle. Rates for the “Last Days of Pompeli” have finally been made by all the Nebraska lines centering in Omaha, with the exception of the Fremont, Eikhorn & Missourl Valley road, which, while it refused to join In mak- ing the rates, stated it would not file any objections to ‘a_one-fare rate. Yesterday at a meeting of the Burlington, Union Pacific, Missouri Pacific and Rock Island passenger officials a one-fare rate within a radius of 100 miles of Omaha was made for Payn's great spectacle. ‘The dates of sale: are August 21, 23, 28 and 30, September 1, 3, 4, 6 and 8, with a_threc days' limit. AS yet nothing has been done by the Towa roads looking to the making of rates, but it is confidently expected that they will join in the rates as made by the roads above men- tioned.
