HELPING THE CROP PROSPECTS Has RAINS Very General Showers All Parts of the St Depot 1 at Omaha Heights-— Grist Local Rallway Gossip. e The report of rain and prospects of rains emanating from the various rallway centers are numerous and encouraging. Monday night there downpour all along the line between the Blufts and the Mississippi, the greater fall being throughout the eastern section of Iowa. There was a refreshing storm of two hours duration in the reglon roundabout Perry yestorday morning. There have been good rains along the en- tire route of the Wabash, and a vastly im- proved look is already reported in the erops of all kinds, particularly corn and pasturage. The Fremont, Elkhorn & Missouri Valley, and the Chicago, St. Paul, Minncapolls & Omaha, have both been well drenched. On the Elkhorn, from Omaha to Oakdale, there was a good fall, especially heavy and soak- ing between Norfolk and Fremont. On the Alblon and Cedar Rapids branch they were lavishly visited, as far south as Linwood on the South Platte and as far north as Verdigree. Along the Sioux City & Pacific, in Towa, there were good rains Monday n'ght and yesterday morning. The B. & M. reports a heavy fall of rain, but brief in duration, at Atwood, Herndon and Cambridge in the Republican Valley, and spasmodic showers at sundry other points, On the Union Pacific yesterday they bad a beautitul rain storm, accompanied with much eleetricity between Omaha and Schuy: ler and between Omaha and Millard Mon- day night. Benutles of Hot Springs. Halford of the Hudson River rail- road passed through the city yesterday enroute from Hot Springs, S. D, to New York. “Do you know the reason,” he re- marked in the Elkhorn office, ‘“why 50 many western people patronize the castern watering places and p; oft to Burope? It is simply because they do not know the wonderful resorts of their own im- mediate vicinity. It may sound better to say you are going abroad or to Saratoga, Newport or Long Branch, but so far as genuine sight- seeing, pleasurc and health are concerned, it isn't in it. The fact is, some people choose to go abroad to sizzle in heat, and chill in fog among strangers, when it would be in- finitely more comfortable at some resort here—ay Dakota Hot Springs for instance— in the midst of scenery which Switzerland or Italy can’t rival; in a climate as pure as a maiden’s blush; an altitude of pleasant ex- vhere . good lotels, splendid and numberless attractions obtain, hove all, ‘the plunge bath' of the world entertains, cures and cleanses the mul- titude of their sins well as their ills. Well, why do they go to Europe or east? Omaha has this season, I am told, gone mainly to Dakota Hot Springs, secondly, to Spirit’ Lake or Minnetonka, but quite a few to_Burope.” Mr. Halford with his wife just returned via the Elkhorn railroad from the Hot Springs. He farther said his trip up was a delight. _Arriving in early morning in an elegant Wagner sleeper in which they rested adjacent to the Evans hotel until 7:30 a. m., got up and dressed lelsurely and stepped just across the road to breakfast. On inquiry Mr. Beatty said that it is all a mistake to say that the corn crop in this state is all gone up, because it is not so. e asserts that the yield will be considerable above the calamity figures now being circulated. He sald to show how the case stood, up in his county, there were several stockmen coming in with him yesterday for the special pur- pose of picking up “feeders,” young cattle to put out on corn. Their idea was that owing to the scare reports being dissemi- nated throughout the state they _could pick them up cheap, say at less thaii one half thoir actual worth. —Mr. Beatty has been over a good deal of territory and in many places he says the outlook is very good. Between here and Lincoln it is not nearly as bad as reported, nor west of Lincoln either, only in spots. Douglas county he estimates will yleld a three-fourths crop. Disp F. L. Beatty, Johnson county, Burned a Depot. During the electrical storm at Omaha Heights yesterday morning the depot build- ing was struck by lightning and entirely con- sumed. It was a handsome little structure, on the Gothic plan of architecture, and was the pride of the locality. There was no one in the building at the time the bolt de- scended and fortunately no one hurt. Rallway Notes. Job Hathaway, manager of Burlington beach, Salt lake, near Lincoln, came in on the B. & M. yesterday. R. H. Harris, the big 'Frisco packing house man, returned to the City of the Golden Gate via the Union Pacific yesterday. H. A. Snyder, general agent of the Rock Island, Is in Chicago. General Passenger Agent’ Kennedy returned from Lake Minne- tonka yesterday. Sixty-nine carloads of California fruit left Ogden yesterday for Omaha and the east over the Union Pacific. And for the next sixty days the shipment will undoubtedly be tremendous. P. Nichols, general superintendent of the Nebraska division of the Union Pncifi, s of the opinion that the recent rains have been of incalculable benefit to the state and insure more than half a crop of corn, John M. Thurston says that the general reports of the Union Pacific recelvers are under preparation, but there is no telling when they will be completed and ready for filing in the United States circuit court. - The Northwestern s handling a tre- mendous quantity of California fruit, more an at any one time in a dozen years. Thero has been a big revival in this trafic sinco the subsidence of the labor troubles. The troops have not as yet been withdrawn from along the western and northern line. At many stations the force has been reduced, but it will not be wholly withdrawn untii things get back to their normal condition, All the roads report the biggest move in stock, cattle and hogs ever known in this western country. Many are shipping through fear of an absolute failure of the corn crop, and in many cases car loads of small pigs have come in. Thurston and famlily turned from an extended tour to the nor ern lakes yosterday. They put in several eral days on the Upper Penlusula, at the Soo, Sault Ste. One of most remarkable will casew that has ever appeared on the docket of the Douglas county court was being heard be ors Judge Baxter yesterday. The document at lssue s the last will and testament of Mrs. Marie Mader, who died at her residence in this city about the middle of April. Mrs. Mader was a woman who was sald have had a remarkable history. She first came to Omaha In the arly '70's and soon became well known in German ecircles. She was a person. of marked ability and was & prominent factor In the literary and dramatic events of the local German world. In those days the dramatic performances given by the German soclety In the old Turner hall on Tenth street pere con- Qucted on a large scale and acquired a well merited reputation for thelr excellence, which was commented on not only in Omaha, but all through the state. In these performances Mrs. Mader always took a leading part, and her interpretation of some of the prominent roles of the stand- ard German dramas was marked by a de- greo of ability that attracted considerable attention. The fact that she was sald to have a very romantice history before her appearance in Omaha did not detract from the prominence which she acquired in the best circles of German society. % During this time Mr. Mader was the edi- tor of the leading German paper of the city. Previously he had occupled the same position on German papers in St. Joe and other cities. His newspaper venture in this city was not a finuncial success and finally he was compelled to abandon it. At this time the advantage of having a sensible wife was made apparent. Mrs, Mader aside from her histrionic ability had also the reputation of being the best cook In Omaha. It was sald, whether justly or not no one er knew, that before her emigration to tlis country she had been at the head of the kitchen of the king of Bavaria, and she then concelved the idea of turning this ac- quircment to account. She opened a boarding house which at once became the headquarters of the leading lights in German society. Among the boarders were numerous young men wio are now among the most prominent German citizens of Omaha and the social position of the landlady as well as her well known ability in the culinary line made her house a very popular home. After some time she gave up her board- ing house to become hcad cook for Ed Mauer, but subsequently had a dispute with him in regard to a question of wages and re-established herself in the boarding house business in the old building on Tenth street, nearly opposite the present location of the Windsor hotel. There her old boarders came back to her and she did a flourishing business. Two or three years before her death, and as she grew advanced In years, she gave up business and settled down to spend the remainder of her life in qulet. She had made enough money so that the in- terest sufficed for her wants and sho lived in_quiet retirement until her death. Some time after her death her will was filed for probate. This was in brevity and form the most remarkable document of the kind that has ever been before this court, the following being a complete copy: “It is hereby my will it T dle, that every- thing I leave belongs to Mrs. Rosa Schmidt. —Marie Mader."” Tho name of Fanny Pribyl and Christian Obermoller were also signed under her own, but whether as witnesses or not did not ap- pear. Not a shred of writing apeared on tho=paper except that given above, and the curious document was the cause of con- siderable_comment at the time. A. S. Brown was appointed administrator of the estate, and the present issue is an ac- tion brought by him through Lis attorney to decide on the legality of the w.l. Rosa Schmldt came to Omaha from St. Joe, where she first formed the acquaintance of Mrs. Mader. She Is a costumer, and still occupies the shop at Eleventh and Harney streots. She used to furnish the materlals for the rman theatricals in which Mrs. Mader was a leader, and in this way became an in- timate friend of the dec:ased. ENERGETIC PISTOL PRACTICE. to Doal with the to Ofiicer Storey and Two Toughs Enguge Ina Briof Battle, Officer Storey exchanged a number of shots with two suspicious characters on the south side of the High school grounds at 2:30 yes- terday morning. The officer was patroling Dodge street, near the school grounds, when he noticed two men sneaking along in the shadows. He called to them, when one of the men drew a revolver and fired three shots at him. The officer brought his own pistol into play and fired four shots, the last one evidently finding a mark, as one of the fellows utfered a ery denoting pain and staggered for a moment. He recovered, however, and, with (he assist- ance of his comrade, managed to escape in the vicinity of Twentieth and California streets, Officer Story Is sure that one of his shots nit hard. Officers were scouring the neigh- borhood for the men at daylight. It is thought the men were burglars who had plunned a robbery the High school grounds. Fishing and bathing, Courtland beach. - Fought Over the Furniture. ‘ Tke Kaplan, a North Sixteenth street fur- niture dealer, and Frank Pascal, a customer, had a fight to a Anish over a common din= ing room table, Pascal coming out several points ahead al went into the store to buy a lot of furniture, picked out what he wanted and agreed upon the price to be pald. At the time he pald a portion of the purchase price, arranging to pay the balance the next day, when he was to take tho stuff away. The next day he called, paid his money, and was loading the furniture into a wagon when he discovered that instead of getting the table which he had bought, Kaplan was palming a worthless one off on him. He protested, but could get no satisfaction out of the dealer, whereupon he pounced upon him and gave him a beating that made him next to unrecognizable to his most intimate friends.
