NEW YORK, July weekly review of trade, which morrow, will say: The heavy ®old, the fall of the treasury reserve and of the price of wheat to the lowest point of record, and the increasing uncertalnty about the tariff have entirely overshadowed other industries, Business delayed for months by two great strikes now crowds the raflronds and swells returns and gives the fmpres- slon of a revival in business, But it is not clear how far there I8 an increase In new trafiic, distinguished from that which has been merely blockaded or deferred, Tn some branches there has heen more activity, but in others less, because events early’ thig week led man¥ to infer that no chunge of tariff would be made. The internal revenue receipts on whisky suddenly dropped more than half, and sales of wool greatly In- crensed. But the uncertainty s not re moved, and much of the business done geeme ' to be in the nature of insurance agninst possibilities. Wheat has found th deeper atill, and has sold making the monthly nverage at New York the lowest ever known. Western receipts have been §74° bushels, agalnst 3,129,265 bushels last vear, in parf because of de- laved shipments, but the movement from the farma has been heavy, while Atlantic exports have heen only 1,511,061 bushel anst 2,057,050 bushels last venr Corn was stronger, with accounts of Ir jury to part of the crop, and the exports are trifiing. Cotton declined a sixteenth to te, though receipts from plantations were small. Official reports count for noth- ing in comparison with enormous visible stocks, Pextile industries have stimulated, according to dealers, by dis- \greements which many suppose may pr yent a change of the tariff, and there has been more buying of ‘common goods, with slightly higher priccs for a few. Notwith- standing the closing of some important mills, the stock of such goods is, on the whole, quite large. In woolens the goods famine which clothiers prepared by them- selves deferring orders is such that im- perative necessities now keep most of the mills at work, and purchases of wools for immediate use are large. But there Is no change for the better as respects orders running into the future, and indeed some concerns have withdrawn spring samples on which very low prices had been fixed, and will make no effort for trade The price of wool has heen greatly swelled by speculation, In the bellef that wool is not likely to decline in any event and will advance sharply if tariff changes fail. Sales for the week were 8,034,100 pounds, a 4600500 pounds last In four weeks of July sales were 22 pounds, against 10,696,500 for the s 3 While scarcity of coke delays resumption of work in many central and western fron mills, the light inquiry for finished products at Chicago and the disappointing demand west of Pittsburg raises doubt whether any material increase can be expected un- til” the tariff question is out of the way The demand for sheets is better at Chicago, and there are numerous orders for stry tural work at Pittsburg, with rather better demand for bars, but nothing like the ex- pected rush For the week failures have been 249 in the United States, against 208 last year. NEW YORK, July 27.—Bradstreet's re view of the state of trade will say to- morrow: Leading influences affecting the course of general trade throughout the United States within a week have not re- sulted in any n. Prolonged drouths and hot winds have damaged corn and other crops in Nebraska, and fears are enter- tained of like losses in IKansas. ‘Without early rains the reduction in the yleld of corni i expected to be considerable. The outlook for the yield in the spring wheat states Is regarded as unfavorable, which reacts upon country merchants and checks demand. Several thousand striking miners in Ohio, Indiana and Alabama refuse to return to work at the rate agreed upon in conference, and this continues to depress business throughout tributary regions. Iron, steel and other industries are hampered throughout the Pittsburg district for lack of coke, which restricts production in the face of ‘a mild demand and keeps the price of spot Iessemer pig and billets about a dollar higher than quotations for future de- very. Continued exports of gold from New York are regarded as an unfavorable in- fluence, and there al more unfavorable reports’ as to mercantile collections. More serious in its disorganizing effects on general business Is the continued delay to tariff legislation, few merchants caring to try to provide for prospective wants in view of the uncertainty. The other side reveals reports of moderate improve- ment In general trade at a larger number of points than last week, improvement in the outlook for the Columbia river canning pick, increased activity In all leading lines at San Francisco, full and regular fruit shipments east from the Pacific coast, an improved demand for iron and steel at Louls, Pittsburg and other centers, and prictically complete restoration of railway freight service throughout the country. Bxports of wheat, United States and Canada, both asts, for six business days ending ' July have increased surpris- ingly, amounting to 3,380,000 bushels. Last week the total was 1,873,000 bushels, and in the weel before 2,377,040 bushels. One year ago in the fourth week of July the exports vere 4,363,000 bushels; two years ago it was 5,000 bushel business failures in the s this week, compared with 212 last week, with 489 in the fourth week f July last year, when the effects of the financial p: were beginning to be felt by the 8 'S community, 'here were 163 in the same weck two' vears ago, and 200 three years ago. Advices from western and northw. cities do not show much improvement as to fecling or demand, Cleveland, Cincin- nati, Louisville, (except for leaf tobacco), Detroit, Omaha, (owing to crop damage), Milwaukee, St. Paul, Minneanolis and Du- luth reporting genel trade as charac- d by more than midsummer duline At some points specified there has been a relative gain, due to a restoration of railwa freight vice. This Is pa ticularly true with respect to Chicago and St. Louls, although at the first named there i8 little 'improvement as compared With 1s immediately preceding the railway St. Louis continues its exception- ally favorable report, particularly with ference to manufacturers of shoes, jobbers in hats, hardware, leather, drugs, iron and steel. Kansus City reports a fair mid- summer trade, BRADSTREET'S FI United § ern ANCIAL REVIEW, Weelk Has Been One of Waiting for Action on the Tariff. NEW YORK, July 27.—Bradstreet’s finan- al review tomorrow will say: This was another week of walting for action on the tariff. Irregular and somewl narrow fluctuations in Sugar stock have conse- quently been the only feature Professional operators, it is true, Quiged in short selling of the grangers, only to find that long stock did not come out and that the reported damage to the corn crop had little real effect, The ensuing cover- ing created a little stronger tone in the rallroad list, but, generally the procecdings have heen duller average of warm weather markets, public 18 entirely out of speculation, London is still indisposed to take any while the uncertainty about the business and financlal situation here is permitted to ist. The alleged Atchison disclosures produced an unfavorable impression on the London market, but it is noted that there was very little selling of the stock from that quarter, The unexpectedly heavy gold shipments, amounting to §5,300,600 fq this week, an th reduction of the United States treasury’s gold reserve to below $60,000,000, has had a disagreeable sentl- ment effect, but seemed to produce little tangible change in the tendency of the mar- ket, which inde 18 too narrow to respond readily to anything. The erratic move- ments of Sugar have corresponded with the changing prospects which every day has brought in the position of the tariff and the sugar schedule at Washington Muny speculative interests have taken part in the manipulation of the stock, but while there has bee some liquidation there seems to have been effective support when- ever declded pressure appeared, SI The and part TRADE KE Havo Been Mal Firmness in Iro CLEVELAND, July Review this week savs with which prices have 18 the most encouraging market for fron and causes of this condition endure in the view of many; but the opin- fons differ widely, particularly in regard 10 Bessemer iron and soft steel, as to the size of the reaction, and meantime the most 18 made of all Hope(ul clements.
