To Whom It May Concern: Take notice that on the 21st day of June, 1894, the Hon- orable Walter, H. Sanborn, United States circuit judge for the Eighth judicial cir- cuit, made an order, of which following is a copy: In the Circvit Court of the United States for the Bighth Judicial Circuit and Dis- trict of Nebraska. Oliver Ames, second, et al, complainants, vs. the Union Pacific Railway ccmpany and others, defendants The petition of the receivers’herein pray ing for Instructions as to the continuance by them of the operations of the lines of railway owned by certain of the defendants herein” and included in the Union Pacific system, whose earnings arc represented i said petition to be insufficient to pay thelr operating expenses and taxes, namely: The Garbon "Cut-Off raliway, the Brighton & the o v & Southwe iilway, the Deny adville & Gunnison the & Central railroad, the Kansas City & O ha railroad, the Atchi- son, Colorado & Pacific railroad, the Atchi- son, Jewell County & Western railroad, the Washington & Idaho railroad, the Oregon Railway Extension company; and for au- thority to use the money derived by d recelvers from the operation of the lines of the Union Pacific Railway company, or other of the defendants hercin, to make up the deficiency arising from the said lines of railway described in said peti- tion as unable to pay expenses and taxcs, and for an order ratifying the acts of sald ceivers in making advances for such pur- poses—has been.presented to this court, and upon an inspeetion thereof It s ordered that sald petition be filed in said cause forthwith, and that said peti- tion be brought on for hearing before me at the United States court roum in St. OFWESTERY PROGRESS Startling Disoovery of an Undorground Out- let to the Missouri, ITFLEDS SOUTHDAKOTA'S ARTESIAN BASIN Fifty Years ionce a One-Horse Croek Will Murk the Channel of the Big Muddy Shoshones Sent Home~Goneral Western News. The recent survey of the Missourl river under the direction of the United 08 geographical engineering department re- sulted In a discovery that that stream |Is undergoing a peculiar trasformation. Dur. ing the survey measurements were made of the volume of water passing between the banks at verious polnts from Great Falls, Mont,, to Sioux City, says the Journal, of the latter place. It was found that the vol- ume at Great Falls measured 4,796 cuble feot per second, whils at Fort Benton, twenty five miles farther down the river, the vol- ume was but 4,331 cuble feet, a decrease of 455 cuble feet, Owing to the large number of ries entering into the river between t Benton and Sfoux City a gradual in crease was noted, until at the latter point, where the final measurement was taken, a flo of 14,776 bie feet per second was reach: In the opinton of some of the e gineers engaged in the surve! he dec nse in the volume between Great Falls and Fort Benton explains the presence of that great subterranean body known as tho South Da- Kota artesian basin. The discrepancy can only be accounted for by the presence of an outlet in the bed of the river somewhere belween the points mentioned. Directly below the upper cataract on the south bank of the river, about half way between the tawns, is a large pool, in which it frequent visitors to the place can be be lieved, are to be found eyeless fish of the ceies said to inhabit subterranean water courses. In all probability the outlet, it one exists, is located at this point, the ak leged presence of these fish tending to cor | roborate the theory. From here, if this sur mise Is correct, it would appear’ that an un derground chaiinel running in a southeast erly direction carries the water into a basin underlying a large area of South Dakota, thus forming a huge subterrancan lake, which has recently heen tapped by the nu merous artesian wells, Another queer dis covery is moted in connection with the sur- vey just completed. In 1878 observations were taken in a siniflar manner, and, u errors in_calculations have been made, sinc that yeaMthere has been a dec of fully 20 per cent in the volume of water in the river. If mo error has heen made, and the rutio of decrease continucs, before fifty years have passed the once majestic Missouri will have dwindled into a significant rivulet OREGO The Dalles salmon cannery has started up. The Poudre Vailey bank reduced its discount rates from 12 to 10 per cent and the example was m- mediately followed by the First Natlon Fort Colling Express states that farmers are in that city every day seeking i to help in the alfalfa fields. There are ployed men in Larimer county. From 5 to $1.50 per day and board is being pald and the harvesting of the hay crop is proceeding very slowly on account of the scarcity of help. The condition of the crops, says the Alamosa Independent Journal, fs better at this time than at the same period in any year since crops have been grown in the San Luis valley.
