Revenue is what the railroads of the country want just at present and any- thing is regarded as fish to their nets that has a cent of revenue connected with it. It was this principle that prompted the Rock Island to haul 174 of Uncle Sam'’s soldiers to Chicago for less than 1 cent a mile, it is said, that nduced the Milwaukee to cut the rate to Chicago for a number of Lincoin school teachers, through the a of the Union Pacific, that actuated the Burling ton to take care of a number of Denver in- structors for less than tariff rates and that moved the Union Pacific to carry several life insurance men from Denver under like shady circumstances. Special United States Treasury Agent Hughes returned from lowa yesterday where he went to arrest the two remainin, members of the gang of counterfeiters which operated around Creston during the past year. The men whom he arrested are Albert Williams and Charles Craven. Wil- liams waived examination and was bound over to the district court for trial in the sum of $1,000. Craven was given a hearing before Commissioner Steadman at Council Bluffs Tuesday afterncon and was also held in_the district court. This breaks up one of the most skillful and dangerous gangs of counterieiters that have been operating in the west for many years. They made bogus silver dollars and half dollars and a very skillful imitation of a five dollar gold piece, some of which were passed on Omaha merchants last fall and winter. Craven lives near Macksburg and was not suspected by the federal authorities until early this spring, when he attempted to mur- der Ed Blair, one of the gang who turncd state's evidence to es pe imprisonment After his release Blair went to Macksburg and as soon as Craven heard of it he chased Blair over the country for several miles on foot and occasionally when he got closc enough he would take a shot at the fugitive. Then the secret service men turnod attention to Craven and have suco securing enough evidence to warrant his ar Test Four other members of this gang ar now serving sentences in the lowa peniten- tiary at Fort Madison. oL S Bilious Colic. Tuesday distribution of premiums at 3 the Sacred Heart academy at Twenty-seventh 4 strect and St. Mary's avense closed what 3 has been unquestionably the most successtul year of the inetitution, the popularity of which 1z rapidly growing among parents who desire the training for thelr daughters in point of literary culture and distinguished manner The evening's program bore the stamp i of refined taste. Each number showed a 3 careful adaptatfon of the part to the pupil b who was to render it, and a rare finish was ~ given to both music and recitation. Before entering the hall the sweet strains of “Euryanthe,” from Von Weber, by Misses Adele Moores, Lillian Bushman, Margaret 4 Kaufman and Tessie Little, at the piano, greeted the visitor. Miss Moores' fine t and musical interpretation were fully | played in the selection from Mozart which N followed, while the falry scene equally grati- fled the eye, which could hardly tire of gaz- ing on the exquisite mountain scene, patuted 4 by the Instructor in art. A marble terrace, 3 with its palms and vises, made a pleasing i foreground, while the room itself was a 4 bower of these graceful exotics. If the ear was caught and the soul stirred by Miss Darlene Coe's in in Mozart's “Zouber- k- flote,” the he was equally touched by her . r Joan of Arc.” The young lady 7 geem to have seized the true Inspiration N of the picce, and by turns the warrior hero, the lonely child and the martyr maid bent 3 1 the feelings of her auditors. Miss 2 henk entered fully into the feelings 2 beautiful salutatory, and face, lips A ful gesture gave a heartfelt’ wel- come to all. The “Sleigh Ride,” in which Miss Jeanne 4 Wakeficld's violin added merriment to the party, gave the imagination a pleasant va- ] cation from the dust and heat 3 of the summer. It would be i ikind, as well as ungrateful, not to give | e little ones their meed of praise, as their 3 fa footsteps and sweet volces charmed every ane. 5 Miss Ri Orcutt, the soloist of the pretty 3 and graceful cantata, n the Glen,” pos- i sessses already a well developed voice, | which promises much in maturer yeara. i Miss Marguerite Wheeler's “Lilliput” was 2 a masterpiece. Every word, even a whisper, being distinctly understood, and the varying parts fully entered into by the tiny maiden. 3 The last weeks of the scholastic year X have been devoted to oral and written ex- ; amirations, which entailed hard study on the part of the pupils, and close attention on that ‘of teachers, and the prizes and crowns distributed by Rt. Rev. Bishop Scannell rewarded the victorious competi- tors. Notwithstanding the financial de- 1 pression, the school has been a great suc- cess as to numbers during the past year and the teachers are proud of the response 3 which their pupils have given to the un- B wearyMg efforts made in their behalf. Tho r attendance has numbered sixty-five, which i is an increase over previous years, the sixth annual comm ement of yesterday closing the most successful term in the | history of the institution, The gold medal for attendance was won A by Miss Cecilia Farrell, there being tem whose markings were perfect. Each of 3 the others reccived a book. The prizes i were for_proficiency in the various grades 1 in the English, scientific and classical i branches. i About twenty members of the clergy wers 4 in attendance, observing closely the evi- dences of advancement made by the pupils : during the year. 1 At Sacred Heart Convent. There were no graduates at the Convent of the Sacred Heart this year, but commence- ment exercises were held there yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock. These are always unique in character, but. those of yesterday were especially interesting and reflected great credit on the pupils of the instftution. 3 The special feature of the program was - the presentation of scenes from the caresr of Joan of Arc. The participants were g Misses Kosters, Shelby and Meyer. Miss H Kosters sustained the part of the heroina of this beautiful operetta with ease and e spirit, whether among her flocks at Domremy il or after the coronation of Charles VII at Rheims, or when going forth resignedly to death. ' Her voice is rich and replste with promise. The three scenes of the operatta were interspersed with musical selections by Y Misses McShane, T. Schmidt, M. Barrett, A. g Faray and R. Shelby. b Tn the “Magic Shoe chiliren of the , primary department discussed with amusing gravity some of the burning questions of 1 the day in the moral, intellectual end politi- cal sphere. Those taking part in the comedy were Misses V. Gehlen, E. McAdam, Helen McConnell, L. Sy E. Schmidt, N. McShane, A. Hayes, M. Shelby, A. O'Rourks k and E. Cleves, of whom the first four gave evidence of especial juvenile talent. The overture was played by Misses T. Schmidt, M. McShane, N. McShane, F. Head, L' Maple, L. Mergen and M. Reynolds, and was exceedingly well done. In fact, E the music, both instrumental and vocal, ; was of a high order and manifested care- ful training, whether on harp, violin, plano / or_guitar o The address to Rt. Rev. Bishop Scannell by Miss E. Schmidt closed the program. i It cmbodied the thought that the servica of the creator must obviously be the end and object of the creature and that every- g short of God is transitory. The salnts stood this, Miss Schmidt said, and i ere were many in the church who under- stood this and it was their duty to make 3 this thought filter through the masses. The % allusion to Bishop Scannell's interest in the 3 of Park Place was delicate and heart- and found an echo in the prelate’s : remarks to the pupils. ar bas been a successtul one, not perhaps in point of numbers, but in the results as shown by the pupils in ihe oral and written examinations concluded A Tucsday.
