The American automatic registering and voting machine was pliced upon exhibition for the first time yesterday afternoon, being In the office of G. W. Sues & Co., where it 4H'll’l-'u| a crowd of persons, who spent Tours In watching the manner In which It registered votes and made up the totals of an imaginary election This machine has been invented by Albert Sfoberg, a_newspaper man of the city, who has been working upon a_plan to s+ plify the system of casting ballots for many months. While the patent {8 owned by the fnventor, a company composed of John Steel, Henry Iolln and a number of other capitals Ists s been formed for the manufacture of the machines in this city. It {s not ex- pected that the machines will be put in use at the clections this fall, the idea being to have men attend the sessions of the next legislatures in all the western and middle states, where the machines will be placed In operation. If thiy work to satisfaction then the plan will be to have bills introduced and passed by the soveral states adopting this as the official voting machine. The invention comprises, essentially, a number of sub-systemns of movable keys, which project beyend the casing somewhat in the manner of the keys of an organ, and the. dovice further resembles that instrument in that it has two banks of keys. Each subsystern of Kevs is pecullar to an office. For “instance, there will be a number of keyvs devoted to the governor; another By8= tem to the leutenant governor, and so on. These keys are known as the straight party Kkeys, nd as soon as one of these keys is depressed the operation of voting will be at an end, as the voter has voted a straight party ticket. By voting a straight party ticket the voter can vote his full ticket within a space of five seconds. The machine is further so arranged that a mixed or a scratched ticket can also ba voted, as there is a small sliding tablet which also automatically records and regiss ters the votes, and which is in connection With the Keys, 0 that as soon as the scratehs ing system’is actuated the remaining keys are locked, making it impossible, by any means, to repeat upon this machine. Tha device s, further, so arranged that If the voter is unable to read hie can vote by color, as each party is given a pecullar color. In the model the republican keys are all blue, the democratic red, the prohibitionist whita and the independent yellow. This Is the only machine upon which a blind man can vote, as each key is provided with a raised Initial letter of “the party, which can, ot course, be felt by touch, 50 that a blind man can vote a ticket. It Is, of course, un= derstood that this could only be a stralght party ticket, as the blind voter would be unable to discriminate among the remaining keys. The arrangement of the instrumentalities works as a check upon a man's Ignorance as well as dishonesty. Tha whole system of keys is united by a simple mechanical, interlocking mechanism and locks one after the other as the keys ara depressed, until the whole system of keys is locked, when the operation of voting is at an end. The judge then operates a re= releasing crank and places the machine in order for the next voter, The device, as built, meets all the re- quirements and benefits of the Australian system, as well as complying with all-the election laws of Jowa and Nebraska. —Thera could not possibly be any contested elections, as the machine is a permanent ballot from one election to the other. By a simple system of three locks the rachine can bo operated and placed in condition only by threc men, no two or one being able to opirate the device. This, of course, prevents the election clerk, the county clerk or the other officials from ses crotly tampering with the machine. Only when all three unite can the machine be placed in condition for voting. The machine discloses inventive ingenuity of the highest order, and is the largest case that has been fled in_the United States patent office in years. While, when finished, the machine is to cost but $200 to $300, the first modey cost in the neighborhood of §2,000, and is entirely an Omaha production. The machine will be on exhibition for two or three days in the office of Sues & Co., The Bee building patent solicitors, where those interested im the subject may see the samc in operation. il a s ST Elegant music today, Courtland beach, Closed for tho Summer. The Willow Springs distillery, which be- longs to the Whisky trust, closed down for the summer yesterday, the supplies on hand being claimed to be sufiicient to furnish the market with distilled products for at least three months. During th time a number of the present employes will be engaged in vepairs and improvements which are annu= ally made in the local plant, but most of the men_ will have to find employment else- where. When running at full capacity the Willow Springs distillery furnishes employ= ment to 125 men. The shutting down of this establishment at this time follows closely the closing of the Columbian Distilling company's works of this city. The latter occurred about a month ago for the same reason.
