Omaha Iots....... 139,27 This decreases the assessment of the lands and lots in the county $640,152, which in a measure c: the commissioners to feel in somewhat better spirits, as they were of the opinion that the valuation of real es- tate in the city would not exceed $20,000,000, with a possibility that it might not extend far beyond the $19,000,000 point. It is difficult to ascertain just where the falling off in real estate values in the city can bo located, as since making the 1893 as- sessment all of the ward boundaries, with the exception of those of the Ninth, have been changed, new territory having been added to some and taken from others. This is strikingly illustrated in the Fifth ward, where this year there seems to have been a great depreciation in values as returned by the assessor of that ward, who has held the office during both years. In 1893 the southern boundary of the ward extended as far south as Chicago street, thence running east to the river, taking in the Union Pacific shops and many of the large manufacturing establishments on the bottoms. By an ordinance the boundaries were changed and the south line placed at Nicholas street, throwing a large quantity of valuable property into the Third ward. R Billous Colie. Fanciers of other people’s horses had a busy time Thursday night, making every move count to their profit, and out in Amblor Place th:y gathered five beasts into their fold. In that portion of the city are numerous vacant lots, and upon these horses are picketed out during the night. Thursday night the horse thieves raided that section of the town, stealing one horse from Thomas Cun- ningham, one from Patrick O'Brlen and three from John Salmon, all the parties re- siding in the vicinity of Forty-second and Arbor streets. The stealing evidently was done shortly after midnight, as a few mo- ments prior to that time all the horses were seen grazing, though an hour later they were all gone. Who did the stealing is a mystery, as no trace has been left behind. Thursday a couple of men were hegging from house to house in Ambler Place and an idea seems to prevail that these indi~ viduals got away with the horses. : Tho two horses, harness and buggy stolen from the barn of Judge Walton at Blair Wed- nesday night haye been recovered, all of the property having been found at the Little Gem oahles i this city Thursday night.
