Opening trades showed from %e to t%e advance, and almost Imemdiately sold up another %c, reacted %e and closed steady. The early Mrength was atiributed to the liberal de- erease on ocean passage of 1,320,000 bu. and to dry weather talk, the steadier European gables and to advices from the other side that shipments of Argentine wheat were fall- Ing off. Room traders bought at the start, while offerings were very limited, but on a littie realizing the price sagged, but” rallied later when the visible supply was announced showing a much larger decrease than antiei- pated—1,935,000 bu. Reports from the west ~Towa and Kansas mainly--stated that rain was needed badly in many sections and crop prospects were not at all bright, There was also injury in Tennessee and Missourl. NEW YORK, June 4.—The week opened on the Stock exchange with a fafrly active speculation and a strong tone to the trad- ing. London was a factor in the advanc tendency of prices, both as a buyer in this market of the arbitrage stocks and also by reason of the improvement of the American securities on the London Stock exchangs One of the principal influences of the specu THE ,u‘ Iation was the unexpected decrease in the month of May. least had been only about 8t. Paul earnings for the A loss of §200,000 at anticipated, and when half “that' amount was reported the short ‘interest in the stock was a trifle scared and began to cover. Purchases for the rallway list in general were also stimulated, but the industrial stocks did not sympathize In the movement, except To- bacco, Distilling, Lead and ~ordage, Sugar was notable weak, and on neavy sales, said to be mainly to realize profits of the recent advance, declined 2% per cent, to 102%, the lower figure Including purchases, which caused a_recovery of 2% per cent, but in the final dealings another selling. movement was developed which resulted in a reaction of 1 per cent, the last sale being made at a de- cline of 1 per cent on the day. Burlington was not largely dealt in, but was bought moderately for the Boston account and rose 1 per cont, reacting % per cent in the later dealing. Northwest gained % per eent and Rock Island % per cent. In the rest of the list the volume of business was light, but dur- ing the greater part of the day the dealings were strong in tone. Toward the close, however, an easier tone prevailed and the market closed slightly heavy. The bond market was generally firm The Evening Post says: The bulk of to- day's transactions were, as usual, confined to a few stocks, the changes elsewhere being made on small tradings. All told, to- day’s advance was considerable, and the fact that Sugar and Chicago Gas hung back was neither surprising nor unfavorable. The Post’s London cable says: The stocks were today about steady. The chief feature was a further rise In gilt-edge stocks and the recovery in Americans. The last named closed at the best figures. Louisville made the chief gain. It is expected that there will be trouble in the grain trade here, but no failure is yet announced. Half a million pounds in goid is coming from Ifidia. There was Just gbout an average Monday's run of stock today. The supply of cattle was less than &S00 head, or about the same as on last Monday and the quality was very fair. The market was active and generally about 10c higher than Saturday. Comparatively light supplies made the dressed beef men free buyers, while the bullish tone to Chicago adyices brought out an active demand from shipping and export buyers. Fair to choice 1,200 to 1,600 Ib. beeves sold at from $3.90 to $1.30 and fair to very good 1,000 to 1,150 Ib. steers brought from $3.75 to $4.10. The trade was tolerably lively from the start to finish, the feeling being firm throughout. A good early clear- ance was effected. Good fat cows and heifers were in active demand at strong ptices, while the common and canning grades ruled dull, although prices were not quotably lower than last week. The general calf market was weak and on an average about G0c lower than a week ago, except perhaps for the best veals. Rough stock of all kinds continues in fair request at geod firm prices. There was not a very rushing trade in stockers and feeders, but prices in general were firmly held, sales of fair to good stock being largely at from $2.85 to $3.15. The demand was not overly brisk, but as th supply was not large the feeling was firm on all sides. Good to cholce feeders are quoted at $3.0063.40, fair to good at $2.80@ .00, and the commoner grades at from $2.80 down. Representative sales: EF. No. Av. Pr. 949 52 8D HOGS—The supply fell a few hundred short of last Monday's big run, but 4,348 hogs made a good run for the first day of the week. Dealers construed it into a sure indication of liberal receipts for the balance of the week, and the feeling was consequently rather bearish. A big run and a lower mar- ket in Chicago did not help matters any and the buyers experienced little difficulty in getting what hogs they needed at prices averaging a nickel lower than Saturday. The general quality of the offerings was not very good and heavy hogs commanded a slight pre- mium, selling at from $4.40 up to $4.50, while common to choice light and light mixed hogs went at from $4.35 up to $4.45. There was very little change in the market from the opening to the close, but the pens were emptied in good season. The bulk of the trading was at from $4.40 to $4.46, as against $4.45 to $4.50 Saturday and $4.50 to $4.56 a week ago today. Representative sales: No. Av. Sh. Pr. Sh. CONCERNING THE CLEARINCS Figures Furnished by the Associated Banks a8 an Index to Business. MAY’S RECORD BETTER THAN APRIL'S Slight Increase in the Volume for the Month —Three Years Compared—What the Figures Indicate—Will Be Better In July. The bank clearings for the month of May show an increase of about 4 per cent over April, and are larger than for any preced- ing month since January. When the com- parison s made with May a year ago the figures do not show up so we there being a decrease for the whole country of 26 per cent. The decrease shown in April from a year ago was only 25 per cent. There Is still a strong tendency toward a decrease as compared with last year at all the lead- ing business centers, New York leads the list with a decrease amounting to 30 per cent, as against 20 per cent for the balance bt following will show the total clear- mgs for the month of May, 184, 1863 and 1882 at Omaha and surrounding citie Omaha.
