NEW YORK, Juné 1.—This was another dull day in the Stock exchange, the market being at times stagnant, Fluctuations, ex- cept In & few stocks, were confined to very narrow limits, and on the whole tha specula- tlon was less Interesting than for a long time. Sugar was dealt in more largely than on yesterday, but (he trading there- in ‘was feverish In tone during the morning, and a decline of 14 per cent was recorded. The selling in the stock was largely based on rumors that the senate Investigation of the sugar deal would in some way prejudice the interests of the refiners. In the afterncon the influ- ence of the scare had worked off, and on good buying the stock rose 2% per cent, closing within % per cent of the highest point touched, at a gain of 1 per cent on the day, the preferred shares rising % per cent. St. Paul was the only one of the granger group which was at all prominent in the dealings. It was sold In small lots by London at the opening, receding % pep cent. A recovery of % per cent was made during the afternoon and a final reaction of % per cent. Burlington & Quincy moved within b per cent Hmit, losing % per cent on the day. There was forelgn selling of Louts- ville & Nustville, resulting in a decline of 1 per cont, of which 4 per cent was recov- ered. Atchlson was sold ., by London THE OMAHA DAILY BEE %A’['URI)AY JUNF 2, 1894 back. The stock fluctuated between 8% and %, closing % per cent above the lowest figures. Missouri Pacific sold down 1§ pef cent to 26% and recovered tha entire loss, closing unchanged from yestorday. The | trading In the rest of the list was light, and prices moved irregularly, the speculation being depressed fn tonk during the morning and In the main firm in the afternoon, the market _closing fairly firm The bond market was throughout the day The Evening Post says: Speculative Wall street, and nobody else, has shown any In- terest In this week's market—has two un- certainties to supply its gossip and influenc its operations. The tariff bill's early passage | and the coal strike's early settlement are both freely predicted. Information, however, 18 limited to predictions, and this being the case, no small market adventurer is dis- posed to get far distant from his moorings. Prices have therefore moved all the week, including today, in a steadily narrowing orbit around the centers fixed a week ago. Today the fluctuations of Sugar stock made up practically all the market The Evening Post's London cablegram says: The stock markets were in a_condi- tion of stagnation today, except for English Investments, which were strong, on the ple- thora of money. The Argentine gold pre- mium §s down to 306, but uncertainty about the loan operation and the ability’ of the government to meet the service debt de- presses values. This and the continuous weakness in Americans check all speculation. I am in- formed that the Argentine negotiations will probably be settled favorably and = quickly. This, with the speedy passage of the Amer fcan tariff bill, would stimulate the markets here marvelously. The condition of Argen- tine exchange favors gold shipments from here. BEEF TRADE OPEfi[D A TRIFLE WEAKER iberal Stpply Gives Dealers a Chance to Pick—Hogs Drop Of a Dime and Close Weak at the w Point. T s FRIDAY, June 1, ,The month of Juné opens with a very falr run of all kinds of ‘#tock. Recelpts for the five days, compared with the corresponding period last week, show a falling off of about 1,200 cattle and 1,000 sheep, while the in- crense I hogs has been about 7,000 head. Ample cattle receipts caused a rather market, but a good general demand pre- vented any serious decline in prices. Re- ceipts here for this week huve not been all heavy, and at other points a considerable falling off has been noted, so that condi- tions generally have not been unfavorable to“%ellers. Local buyers started in rather bearish, but a good outside demand held prices about steady on desirable beef grades. Common hdlf fat stock did not fare so weil, and most buyers were inclined to neglect it. Rough heavy cattle and thin light stock was siow of sale all day and generally at prices weak to a shade lower than Thursday. Con- sidering the rather * liberal supply, the movement was fairly active, and an_ early clearance of desirable stock was effected, while there were a few odd bunches of com- mon stuff still in first hands at the close. Good to cholce fat cows and heifers were in active demand at strong prices, but the common and canning grades ruled dull and lower, There were a good many- calves on sale, and trade was slow at steady to a shade easier prices. The market for bulls, oxen and stags“was just about steady. In stockers and feeders a very falr amount of business was transacted, and generally on the basis of still firmer prices. More country buyers appeared than for some time past, and present supplies are not at all burdensome. The general market {s quota- Bly 10c to 15¢ higher than a week ago. Fair to good stock sold largely at from $3 to $3.25. Good to choice feeders are quoted at $3 to $3.40, fair to good at $2.75 to $3 and the commoner’ grades at from $2.75 down. In quality the hogs were not so good as last week, the proportion of common light stuff increasing daily. Business opened out slow, with buyers generally bidding about a nickel lower than Thursday. The close was weak at the decline, but about everything finally changed hands, the bulk at $4.50 and $4.56, against $4.56 on Thursday and $4.65 and $4.70 on last Friday.
