COMMERCIAL AXD FINANCIAL Dullness Was the Feature in All Markets Yesterday. WHEAT AT THE OPENING DECLINED With but Few Exceptions the News Was Benrish-In Corn There Was Little Animation, with Trade Prac- tically All Local CHICAGO, May 7.--Dullncss was the fea ture In all markets today. Wheat, under all sorts of bearish news, including lower cables, bearish crop reports and an Increazo In passage, declined steadily from start to finish and closed with July 1%e lower than on aturday. Corn closed 3¢ lower; oats % and ribs, with lard unchanged. In wheat the opening trades showed %c to %o decline and gradually sold down %c to | e more, rallied Yo, declined %e and closed as stated. With but few exceptione the news. was bearish, Outside markets were weak, New York especially had many selling orders In the market. July finished but ¥c from the bottom figures of the day. In corn there was very little animation, with the trade practically all locai and fluc- “tuations confined within Jac limits The easier tendency of wheat and the favorable | weather scemed to create a bearish senti- ment, but the selling was not large. The | closing prices were near the bottom In ocats there was a fair trade and a weaker fecling, the offerings being ample for the present requirements of shorts, and prices, after opening steady, receded %e for May and June and closed easy at about the inside figure Provisions were falrly steady, but very dull, with scarcely any trading, the pit being almost deserted. It was claimed by some of the oldest operators to be one of the slowest days on record. Compared with Saturday, July pork fs 2gc lower, July lard unchanged and July ribs 6e lower. Mo Discusses and Compares Methods of Some 300 of tho Omaha teachers gathered at the High school building yesterday aft noon to hear Dr. J. M. Rice discuss comparisonn between the German and the American methods of instruction, more espe lly that branch pertaining to recitations Recltations the doctor classificd as sclen tific and unscientific—in Amerien the latter obtained; in Germany the former. With the text book for a guide the American teacher too often heard a lesson rather than gave it oo much text book and too little deduction of facts from his elemental knowledge of | things was what the present American youth was suffering from. The sclentific method pursued by the Germans was acquired only by patience and study; it possessed three in dispensible elements of success, namely, dim, development and drill. Many lessons given by teachers in this country possessed one or two, but rar found united, the lecturer gave a verb serles of lessons in mathemat The puplls as well as the teachers were aware of the aim of these lessons. First came a_ revie some previously acquired knowledge necessary to progress on the desired lne; then question and answer by teacher and pupils, all the questions tending toward an advancement of information on the subject; informatio: ved rather from the thought power n the pupil than from any statement mado by the teacher. Thus from one lesson to another the aim always In view, was developed ond branch of a difficuit subfect; the lesson hay ing reached this stage, a drill or recapita lation of the necessary and salient points was giwen and each pupil wrote down the facts acquired in a book, which he could refer to, no text book being used. Replying to questions, the sp that the average age of the pupils in th class was 12 vears; that the recitation oc cupied forty-five minutes: that a recess of as many minutes followed; then a_shorter lesson, followed also by recess, and so on, makiug only three recitations in a morning and cach recitation followed by a reer The superiority of the German methe of instruction ~the speaker ascribed in a measure to the preparatory training, which required a course of cight years in a pub- lic school, three years in a normal &chool and two years of practice in teaching under trained instructors before a license o teach was granted. Concluding, the doctor de- clared that he had no idea of decrying Amer- ican schools, for he found in them many admirable and unexcelled qualities — the Spirit of sympathy, which he failed to see in German schools, being quite conspicu- ous. The language work, also, was better, and it only in the hope that a reform in the way of teaching some subjects would bring about a relative excellence to the Ger- man_ schools that the comparisons were made. The brief lecture being over, Mr. Fitz- patrick thanked the teachers for their at- tention and made a very telling addenda to the matter of the lecture, to-wit: That any suggestion of improvement, to be valu- able, must be assimilated in such a way that it would bear fruit, even if it be on lines totally unlike those intended. The lecture created a good dea! of com- ment among the teachers, and was consid- ered valuable, as it awakened thought and provoked discussion on the vital subject of ways and means. e HER FOREC: Fair and Warmer Except in Extreme South- enst Part of Nebraska WASHINGTON, May 7.—The indications for Tuesday are: For Nebraska—Fair; warmer, except slightly cooler in the extreme southeast portion; varlable winds.
