C, D. Hutehinson, 162 Farnam str RE—64 8 $4,000.00 b, and 1 THE THEATERS, During his coming engagement at the Boyd Alexander Salvini will be seen In two plays in which he will be new to his admirers here, One will be the revival of an old play, the other will be something entirely new, hav- ing only been put on by the actor during the present season. “Ruy Blas” is a play that Is familiar to the older generation of theater goers, as was “Don Cacsar,” until young Salvini resurrectsd it, but it has been years since they have seen it. Somehow or other, aside from Salvini, there does not ap pear to’br an actor in this country at the present day capable of interpreting these roles. They are plays that always were and always will be popular, when they have an ideal romantic hero like Salvini to portray them. Since Fechter, however, we have had no fdeal romantic actor, and it {s doubtful it Fechter's methods would be accopted now Salvini has but recently add:d “Ruy Blas to his repertoire for this season, and it s pleasing to note that it was the success of his extended New York engagement at the beginning of his season. It is not diffeult o imagine Salvini as an ideal of Hugo bitious hero. He will also present Thre» Guardsmen.” Salvini's new play will be “Zamar," a story of Portuguese life. It has been pronounced a strong story of Portus guese gypsy life in the sixteanth century and as offering many splendid opportunitiss to Salyini Another strong feature of the engagement Wil be the supporting company, which in- cludes such eminent people as Willlam Red- mond, John A, Lans, Willilam Harrls, Bleanor Moretti, Augusta de Forrest, Maude Dixon and others. The arrangement of his repertoire is “The Three Guardsmen' Mol day, “Ruy Blas” Tuesday and “Zamar' Wednesday. The Brothers La Rose, who wore the at- traction at the Elks benefit, will open with the Clark & La Ro e High Class Vaudeville company at the Fiftenth Street theater for one Week, commencing Sunday matinee, May 20. This company has aiso a great many more well noted artists, including the Robinsons, Harrigan and Black, Frank Williamson, Press Wakeficld, Hart and Irving, Seymours, Miss Arnold and Pauling and Lee, Beginning at the regular Sunday matinea May 13, and for the week, the RFifteenth Street theater announces a season of light opera by the Calloun Opera company. The company created a very favorable impres- sion during its last visit, and it is said this season’s_organization is superior in every way. The operas to be produced for the week will be “The Dlack Hussar” for Suns day, Monday and Tucsday, “‘Sald Pasha' at the Wednesday matinee and Wednesday evening; “The Mikado" Thursday; *The Bohemian Girl,” Friday and Saturday mat- inee, and in the evening “The Black Hussar' will be repeated. The list of the princi- pals includes the following well known peo- ple: Julia Calhoun, mezzo soprano, last season with Calhoun Opera company. Sylvester Cornish, contralto, formerly with DeWolf Hopper and Isle of Champagne Opera company. George Lyding, primo tenor, last season with Miss Helyet. Douglas Flint, Kirtland Calhoun, come- dians, with the Callioun Opera company last season. Beatrice McKenzie, soprano. Agnes Baylies, soprano. Cora Leavitt, contralto. Herbert Walters, Joseph Danton, tenors. Otis B. Thayer, W. R. Beatty, baritones. The Sisters Braccee, dancers, Chorus of twenty-four and the company's own orchestra, under the direction of Carl Martens. Commencing with matinee today and for one week, with Wednesday and Saturday matinees, “A Prisoner for Life” will be pre- ented at the Fifteenth Street theater by a company of competent and experienced artists. It is a soul-stirring play and has never been equalled for the beauty and grandeur of its scenic effects, notably “The Great Prison Quarry” and “The Ocean by Moon- light” scenes. The action of the drama is in- terspersed with brilliant specialties, the latest songs, brightest sayings and most attrac- tive dances being introduced. Included in this cleverest of companies is the talented comedian Gus Weinberg, author of the favorite song, “Now He's Sorry that He Spoke,” and other favorites equally well known. Mr. W. T. Carleton, the well known singer and opera manager, thinks that Omaha is large enough and has enough lovers of music to support a three-week's season of opera, and consequently on Monday evening, the 21st nst., he will bring his company to Boyd's theater and inaagurate a three- week's season of opera at popular prices. Mr. Carleton proposes to strengthen his company specially for this engagement, two additional ~ artists having already been signed and two more in contemplation. The scason's repertoire will include the fol lowing _opera The Mikado,” “Nanon, “Fra DI “Chimes of ' Normandy.” “The Bohemian Girl,” “Dorothy” and Francis Wilsin’s new version of “Erminie.”” S THE FASTEST AFLOAT. peed of n New Eiritish Torpedo ot An account of the official trial of the new British torpedo boat destroyer, Hornet, which recently took place in the estuary of Remarkable the Thames, shows that that craft Is the fastest vessel of her type afloat. During a three hours' trial the average speed per hour was found to be 27,628 knots. This considerably ecclipses any previous perform= ance of any vessel of the Hornet's class. The best record claimed by any other bullder of boats of this type is 27.22 knots per hour, sald to have been made by the Chevalier, which was constructed by M. Normand of Havre, the Hornet After the official speed trial, Handiness 13 had a series of turning trials. one of the most important qualities of a torpedo boat, and in this the craft was not found wanting. The vessel was circled at full speed, first to starboard, then to port. The result of the trial was in all respects satisfactory. The vessel was found to be very obedient to her helm, and her tactical Qiameter, which Is the diameter of a circle, in which she can turn, was smaller than some of the experts expected that it would be, considering the length of the boat. Another noticeable feature was the ab- sence of vibration. Barely any was felt when running at reduced speed, and there was practically none when the throttles were wide open. There was no heating of any parts of the cugines, and the boilers generated ample steam, with a mean air pressure of fifteen inches.
