Hazen replied that he could promise nothing of the sort, but if any such arrange ments could be made he would let him know as soon as possible BREAKFAST AND R Even before this conference had ended the men had feft the train and were build ing fires by the side of the track, hurrying to and fro with big pails of water, washing | ana preparing breakfast. Blankets were thrown from the cars, and in a short time hundreds of tired men were resting beneath the rays of a warm April sun. Some slept, while others gathered about the camy and read the morning papers and told of the journey over the ountaing, now a then injecting to homes and little ones in the e states. After a rest of an hour the order to prepare breakfast was and there was a hurrying to the com- road, Biv mis: department, from which beef, pies and coffee were issued to the cooks of each of the companies of the army. In a short time the combination of a morning and midday meal was spread, after which the | men fell to and ate with as much satisfac- tion as though they had been shoving their feet under the mahogany of the Grand. The meal having been finished, many of the men called upon the barber, where beards which had been started on the Pacific coast way to razors. Improvised barber chair consisted of railway ties, boxes, pails and the railroad track. After the members of the army had fin- fshed their tollet they were ready to vec callers, and from that time until the parted for the east they were kept bu it is estimated that 50,000 persons called at the camp during the day and evening. ‘The Couneil Bluffs people turned out in full foree. while the Omaha contingent threatencd to swamp the carrying capacity of the motor lines. All of the closed cars of the company were pressed into the ser during the early part of the day, and before noon the company was compelled o press the summer ars into the service. Trains were run five minutes apart, with two, and three in cach section, cach running on one train’s time. At an early hour it became apparent that Governor Jackson's soldiers would not b needed, and before moon -most of them had quartered themselves under the sheds of the senger depot or.argund the —uptown Others of the young soldiers, and especially those whe, were out h.r”. time, ingered about the open watering places ¢ e pronibition town, or, else flirted with the maidens who had wandered into camp without chaperones -and were intent upon seeing an army of genuine Commonwealers WANTED NO TRAMPS. When the army of Commonwealers pulled over the Union Pacifie bridge and landed on Towa soil it was prédicted that all of the tramps and_vagrants of both Omaha and Council Bluffs would beecome Keilyized and take up the trail leading toward Washing ton. This prediction, however, never ma- terialized, for General Kelly was on to his Job and at once set about onraging any movement of the kind. From the door of the commissary car he made the nouncement that he would handle all of the recruits who cared to enlist for the cam- paign against monopaly, but he would not tolerate the presence of a tramp. What he wanted, he said, were honorable men and no others. He had had a few tramps, but had got rid of them as soon as they made their identity known, dumping them at way stations. This announcement dampened the ardor of the gentlemen who were co stitutionally opposed to work, and they wended thelr way back to the two towns from whence they came. In speaking of this matter with the Con monweal representative of The Bee, General Kelly remarked that he would not allow a tramp to enlist, if he knew the man wa a tramp. If he discovered that he one after he had goten into the would at once call a drumhead court-mar- tial, and, it the fellow was convicted, he would be driven out of the army in di grace. “We want men,” continued the gen- eral, “who, when they line up in Washing- ton, will have as much respectability the' senators and representatives them- selves, and if I can keep the army in its present soclal and moral condition the rep- resentatives of the states will not feel ashamed of our coming. It is true that we are not as rich some of the members of congress, but are as respectable and have the same kind of rich blood flowing through our veins. Besides this, we all are from the same original and common parents,” The busiest man in the whole the commanding officer, Gene While he had everything down to a system, all of his under officers apparently wanted his consent and advice before making the simplest move. This fact was the cause of his being on the go from early morning until night. He gave orders how to unload, how to cook the meat and how to repack the baggage, besides devoting considerable time to trying to make traflic arrangements for the movement of the army toward the national capital. KELLY'S EARNDST ADDRESS. During the afternoon repeated calls were made for the general, as the vast assem- blage wanted to know something of the oratorical ability of the leader who had brought 1,300 men over the Rocky moun tains. Responding (o the calls, a slight man, wearing a box suit of blue, his head surmounted by a yacthing cap, appeared at the side door of the commissary car and was greeted with a_rousing round of chee The man was General Kelly, and, dofiing s cap, he said Ladies and gentlemen, we come to you today, not as a body of tramps, but as loncst, would-be self-supporting laboring men, all free citizens of the United States.
