i THURSDAY, COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Government Roport Induced Free Selling and Realizing in Wheat. THAT CEREAL WEAKENED AND LOST Slumpy Wheat Market and & Slack Eastern Demand Cansed Corn to Fall Off Several Fractions -Oats Were Active but Weak, April 11 ne of 2%e. Wheat was The govern bearish, and Corn, wheat CHICAGO, very weak, at a dec report, which was considered a d free selling and realizing, closed only from the bottom. and provisions down with closed lower. After some conflict of opinion on th yesterday afternoon regarding the in tation of the government report, the weak manner in which the market opened this morning indicated that all but a small rem- nant of the bull fecling engendered by it had been wiped out. There were seilers of May wheat immediately on the opening at anywhere from down to 61%ec. Not much was parted that time at the lower of those figures, but it was not long before 61%c was the best obtainable price, and almost le lower cepted before an hour of the session had passed, 607c being the current price for a moment or two about 10:30 o'clock, before enough buying orders came in to arrest a lower range of stop loss orders from coming on the market, The government report for the average 1.t'on be vn: 10 points higher than on April 1 last and 6% points above the April conditlon in 1802, lh which latter the yield of winter Wwhent was 359,000,000 bu., gome warrant was found for the bearish interpretation that speculators had determined to put upon the report. The weather was doing its best to ir the injury it did toward the end of rch. Receipts were fairly liberal in th rthwest, heavy in fact, as compared with those of a r ago. It was on the corre- gponding day of last year that the Cudahys abandoned their “May deal.”” Before the decline quite stopped May sold at 607c, but rallied again to 61% The bears again jumped on the market, and after another break to 60%e and about a dozen fluctuations betw 1 that and 60%ec, there followed a fresh drop to 60'%e, a recovery to 60%e, and yet another decline to 60%ec. About half an hour from the close the price had once re- covered to 607%ec. The closing phase of the market was one of renewed weakness. New York reported 25 boat loads taken for export, but that fact did not sustain the courage of the bulls or restrain the aggres- sive action of the bears, and a drop from 69746 to 60'%¢ ceeurr_d in the last ten minutes of the session, the closing quotation being 60%c for seller: Although Armour was unloading two car- goes of corn which had been loaded to go east, the market here for that article for a long time resisted the bearish influence of such a proceeding, and likewise the effect of a slumpy wheat market. These combined influences and a_ slack eastern demand told with more effect after half of the session had gone by. May opened at 35%c and soid off to 38%c and recovered a little, but re- fused to go below 88%c until late in the day, when there was a further decline to 38i5c. May closed at from 38%c to 38t and July at 39%c, a loss of about e since yesterday. Oats were active, but weak and decidedly lower in sympathy with wheat and the free selling by several brokers. Prices receded gharply, the near futures declining from e to lc and the more deferred months from 7c to 1%c. On the break there was good buying by the largest holders and prices reacted %c to e, the market clos steady at n net loss of from lec to lc, tember being the weak sions were weakened by the reccipts proving more liberal than yester- estimates. There was a drop on that of from 6c to 10c in pork at the opening. Lard for July opened at a decline of 2iec and there was a clean slump of 10c in May ribs as soon as trading started. The ent tn- May oats went and curb pre 62 with wa esti- mate that tomorrow's receipts of hogs would number 32,000 head added to the weakness and the extreme heaviness of the wheat market clinched 1t. There was a decline in all for the day of 37%c in pork and 15c to 17%c in lard and 20c in ribs. The trade was extremely bearish in expressing opin- fons about the market, and a heavier run of hogs in the near future was confidentiy predicted among them. Estimated receipts for tomorrow: Wheat, b5 cars; corn, 120 cars; oats, S0 cars; hogs, 35,000 head. Aprl B—California CHICAGO, oranges, f ' fan : T STOCKS AND BONDS, Specnlation Was Tntensely Dull and Abso- lutely Devold of Interest YORK, April 11.—The ulation was intensely dull and absolutely de- vold of Interest. Chicago Gas was the only stock in which the transactions exceeded 10,000 shares, and in only four others, St. Paul, Sugar, Missourl Pacific and American Tobacco, did the sales exceed 5,000 shares. The fluctuations were extremely narrow and in but few instances did the changes In the day range fractions, London in the market as a small buyer of St. Paul and some of the low priced arbitrage spe cial helped to sustain prices early In the day, when a slight bear raid threatened values. But, considering the dullness and the lack of buyers, the market was very firmly held. A rald was made on Ch Gas In the opening dealings, based on fresh rumors of the annofincement of an unfavor- able decision In the quo warranto case, and, after an advance of 3 per cent, the shares were sold off % per cent. The stock offered being readily absorbed checked the downs ward movement and brought about an ad- vance of 1% per cent, of which 1 per cent was lost at the ciose. Sugar declined Y% per cent and then began to move upward, making a gain of 1% per cent, but reacting 14 per cent in the final dealings. The pur- chasing movement in American Tobacco con- tinued “and resulted In an appreciation in value of 8% per cent is expected that a mall shipment of gold will be made to “rance on Saturday, but the talk of gold export does not affect the stock speculation, inasmuch as the foreign exchange market is not favorable to any lurge transactions of this nature. The bond market was firm in tone all day. The Evening Post sa People who are fond of daily “points” were somewhat puz- zled what to do today with last night's goy- ernment crop report. The percentage show- ing of April 1, with allowance made for decreased acreage, was high— per cent over that of April, 1803. But the Washing- ton experts remark that damag: was done to the crops after April's opening, and that they were wholly in doubt as to its serious ness. Since this alleged destruction was the chief speculative point in last week's wheat market, the minds of operators are left very much where they were b-fore yesterday's government report was issued. Tie reaction in wheat was accepted as a tolerable « tainty before the report was published. The stock market is just now, at least, as good a guide to the general situation as the mar- ket for speculative wheat. Therefore the calm differencs of the stock values to the Chicago market turmoil of today. was a very possible forecast of the future. In the gen- eral improvement American Tobacco ad- vanced 1% per cent, Laclede Gas preferred % per cent, Laclede Gas common 1% per cent, Loulsville % per cent, and Sugar % per cent. WEDNESDAY, April 11 Receipts of Loth eattle and hogs were ex- ceptionally heavy today, 383 cars in all, a total of over 16,000 head of stock of all kinds. So far this week, compared with last, there has been an incr of over 3,000 cattle and 6,000 hogs. Sheep supplies have fallen oft nearly 1,200 head. The supply of cattle was a trifle over 5,000 head, making it the heaviest run in nearly five months, Less than two weeks ago such a run as this would have swamped the market. As it was, buyers lost no time in picking the cattle up, although at pric on an averege 10c to 15¢ lower than Tues- day. On the early market competition was good, both dressed beof men and outsiders evidently wanting suppiles. Prices ruled very unevenly lower, but 10c to 15c would cover the decline. Later, as speculative shippers dropped out on receipt of more bearish news from the east, the market further weakened and at the close it was almost impossible to get the early morning prices, especlally for the heavier grades. The light and medium weight beeves did not suffer so much as the heavies, and, taking it all in all, considering the decline, it was a good, ective market and the big bulk of the trading was over by noon. As a rule the quality of the offerings was very fair. Receipts were made up almost en of stecrs and there a notable ty of scalawags. re were not over twenty loads of cows all told, and the weakness in steers was not felt in this branch of the business. The demand was active and the market firm, Calves were In fairly liberal sup- ply and no more than steady, while rough stock of all kind continues in good request at strong prices. Notwithstanding the large number of cat- tle received, the supply of feeding steers was rather limited, There was an active inquiry for desirable stock, and prices ruled firmer on all such. The volume of trading was not large, but many more cattle could readily find good buyers. Good to choic feeders are quoted at from $3.10 to $3. fair to good at from $2.75 to $3, and lighter, commoner grades at from $2.75 down.
