A sufficient number of buying orders from local shorts and from outside sources to absorb the early offerings and*to prevent the heavy quantity offered from causing more than temporary frac tional declines during the first hour of the session. The May futures opencd with @ fow selfers at 61%c, but there were numer ous buyers at 61%c, and at the same time some at 61%c. The fluctuations for the re mainder of the time referred to were from 61%c to 615%c. The cause of the sudden rise at the opening was the gathering bull senti- ment, due to the continued bad reports from numerou jons of the winter wheat country. Those reports continued to confirm the opinions expessed of serious damages immediately after the Good Fri day freeze. Rains in Kansas and Missouri g0 badly needed to give those states a chance, were still withheld. — The other, news of the day consisted chiefly of the sta- tistical ftems of the two days movement, and those were also in the main of a bullish character. The seaboard clearances of wheat and flour were very heavy, amounting to about 660,000 bu. from the four principal Atlantic ports The world's shipments of wheat and flour for last week, outside of what went from the United States and Canada, amounts to 1,832,000 bu., instead of about 7,000,000, needed by the fmportfng countries All these rather bullish facts were put into the shade when it became known that, in addition to the erop damage east of the Rockies, the crop of the Pacific side was also xeriously threatencd with disaster. Prices appeared no object until May had advanced to G3c and a shade higher and July to 64%c as against 62c at the close of Monday for the latter delivery. There were sales as high as te, and then a reaction to 621sc, followed by another bulge to 63c, and the price was from 6274¢ to Gic at the close. The corn market was but s by the great bulge in wh Trade was cul', and, although an advance of %e took place, the purchases causing that slight gain were apparently on the expectation of a still greater amount of sympathy of the wh market. May opened at from 37%e to 37%c, against 37%c at the close on Monday. It rose another ¥%e to 87%c and closed &t from 37%e to 37%e. Pork le Jumping up 76¢ per bbl in the course of the day and holding 52ige of the gain to the close. Brokers supposed to be buying for Armour & Co. were quite active and the packers generally were apparently inclined to favor the advance. A llght run of hogs Is expected for the mear future and to that was ascribed the bullish feeling prevailing. The hog receipts today were 22,000 head, and the price at the yards was reported from Gc to 10c higher. ~ Lard and ribs did not show so much vim jn the way of adding to their former values as did pork, but they closed with virtually all the ad: vance of the day held. NEW YORK, April 4.—The feature of in terest In the Stock exchange circles today was the report of the General Electrie com- pany for 1893, which was an exposition of an unhealthy condition during the period in- cluded within the report. But the fact that the knife had been used judiciously in cutting off the rotten branches and that that operation had resulted not unfavorably did not prevent a raid on the company's stock. The bears took advantage of the opportunity afforded by the announcement made in the report that $1,000,000 surplus had in 1892 been changed into a deficit of over $12,000,000 in 1893, The report caused a_selling movement of large proportion which resulted in a break in the company’s shares of 3% per cent, of which only % per cent was recovered at the clos The gen eral market opened weak and a shade lower than the closing prices of yester Distil ling, after an advance of % per cent, was sold down % per cent on Chicago orders, based on a report that the attorney gencral would tomorrow render a decision against the company. The shares closed 3 per cent above the bottom figures. Missouri Pacific reacted % per cent in the early deal ings on liquidating sales, but later recov ered, and on buying reported to be for the Gould party, rose 1% per cent, subsequently reacted 1% per cent and closing at a rally of %@7% per cent below terday's final sale, St. Paul was sold by London and the local traders In the opening dealings, but receded only % per cent later, recovering 1 per cent and rallying % per cent, The speculation was heavy in tone during the first hour, but between 11 o'clock and noon was falrly firm and higher figures were made up to 1 o'clock. A period of depression fol lowed, the losses, however, being merely fractional, -and was succeeded by a good market, which lasted to delivery hour. From that time to th the tendency was downward and the final trading was heavy The Evening Post says: In both silyer and wheat there are special reasons for the recent advance. In both reduced produe tion, present or prospective, has suddenly risen to important market influences. Hoth had been oversold by daring speculators That these two commodities should ad vance, howevcr, almost simultancously with the advance in securities, Is very possible more than a coincidence Iver, wheat d securities are at the moment the thres t sonsitive of all the world's speculative All have suffered alike in conse of last year's tremendous break That all three should recover at tn spite of the varying circumstances trade very possibly reflects the reviving confidence which was felt as usual first on the market for securitie Such recoverles are rarely regular at first; they proceed almost invariably by fits and starts.
