T FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT HE Fair is not only a success, but a triumph,—an American triumph. When it closes, we “can think rightfully and gratefully of the men who made it such. They would be knighted in England or Germany; but perhaps all they can expect in free, democratic America is that the newspapers and peopile, who knew all along and in everything a better way, shall admit that, on the whole, it was well they were not in the management. IT HAS BEEN THE first « gathering together of all nations and peoples and tongues upon the earth;” the first successful attempt to take the bearings of human progress, and determine by exact observation the relative position of every art, science, and craft, as practiced by every race and nation on this threshold of the twentieth century, The World’s Fair is now finished, so far as the actual Exposition 18 concerned, but unless its lessons are crystallized into permanent form, its work is no more complete than would have been the protest of the Colonies against Great Britain without the Declaration of Independence. THE WORLD’S COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION HAS A TREMENDOUS WORK YET TO DO And it must be done on a gigantic scale, with an expenditure of money, thiought, and skill commensurate with the greatness of the undertaking, The Exposition is over, but sone great chronic’e of its existence is necessary. HIS GREAT LITERARY WORK has at last been undertaken. Its scope is tremendous, It is intended that it shall be an artistic achievement equalled by nothing ever before attempted in America. Fully two years will be required for the completion of the work. TEE NAMES OF THE ARTISTS, CON- tributors and collaborators who will together create this ‘“Book of the Builders,” would fill the entire space occupied by this first announcament, Full and complete detalls will be given to the pub- licin a shcrt time, and more extended reference will then be made to the character of the work, its scope, and the probable time in which it canbe carried to completion, For the present, however, 1!1?proper' to announce that the many interests in- volved in the undertaking have at last all been united In an association chartered by the State of Illinois as the COLUMBIAN MEMORIAL PUBLICA- TION SOCIETY, . and under proper Boards of Government, Officials, and Committees, the work has been ultimately systematized and carried forward, HE chief executive officers of the Society in whose hands have been placed the active complilation of this most valuable historical and educational work, are D. MILLET, “Direotor of Decoration” at the World's Cclumbian Exposition, HE decorations and embellishments which willilluminate the work will be designed by a corps of sixty-five artists, carefully selected by a committee, as representing the men and women Justly entitied to be called the LEADING ARTISTS OF AMERICA. HE illustrations will be entirely from designs by these artists, made trom original sketches, made expressly for the ‘‘ Book of the Builders,” and never before shown to the public, It will be the greatest exhibition of American art ever com* prised in a single work, HILE every published view of the Fair has become familiar througa constant presenta- tion, these designs by the greatest artists in Amer- ifca, working wholly from original sketches, will be shown to the world only in this Memorial His- tory. It will be published in TWENTY-FIVE PARTS, APPEARING SEMI-MONTHLY DURING A PERIOD OF TWELVE MONTHS.
