COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Frespeets of a Cold Enap Caueed Wheat to Improve, CORN AND OATS SHOWED STRENGTH Provisions Were Firmer at the Opening, Due to Largely Reduced Receipts Over the Day's Estimate — Speculation March 20.—Wheat higher, was qulet after a CHICA but firm today, closing %e range of only %c. The prospect of some cold weather, liberal clearances and the small total afloat for Europe held the price, while the warm rains, lower cables and frec selling on the hard spots prevented advance. May closed only %c from the top. Corn was strong, and toward the close oats very strong, with an advance secured In of e from in oats. visions made a fair advance early, but m 1y all of it before the clos The developments of the market news dur- ing the afternoon averaged more favorable for wheat, but the price, after hanging for over half an hour within %c of the closing quotation of the previous afternoon, began to respond slightly to the féw bullish fea tures of the morning's news. There w no encoura in the early cablegrams which reflected the previous day's weaknesg here. The northwestern receipts were a little higher than on the day before, The reports from Missour, Kentucky and Ten nesgee sald that wheat was jointed and therefo ily susceptible to damage from late frosts, should they occu and the weather bureau here coming out with a pre diction of a cold snap caused enough appre- hension among the shorts to induce some cautious covering up of their exposed con- tracts The N York clearances of yester- day were quite liberal of wheat and flour, which likewise helped the price a little when reported. The total put afloat for Euro was 5,082,000 bu., which is at least 1,600,000 bu. under the estimated weekly requirements of the importing countries. Under the com- bined influences of the foregoing the price of May wheat rose from 67%c to b7%e, around which it had been playing for half an hour, to G8%c. Business was rather light, prin cipally on local account, but with some trade from New York, chiefly in the way of buy. ing, and with some orders from St. Louis on both sides of the market. Bradstreet's usual weekly estimates of the changes in warchouse stocks throughout the world gave a total decrease of 1,940,000 bu. The same authority estimated the decrease of the week preceding at 633,000 bu. There was a_con- tinuation of the Inquiry for cash No. 2 gpring wheat here, with 50,000 bu. reported worked by Bordoff & Co. early in the se sion. It is said there were orders in the market here for over 500,000 bu. of No. 2 spring at e under the price of May, which 50 ar the buyers have not been able to se- cure at the limit. The closing cables brought slightly lower quotations and the price al- most stood still at 67%c for forty-five min- utes near the close. The closing price for May was from 57%c to o8¢, and for July Go%e The corn market was firm and made a slight gain. The Liverpool market was quiet at’a slight advance and the estimated receipts for tomorrow show a large reduc- tion from the recent average. There was also a brisk demand from shippers. The opening price for May was 36%c and a grad- ual advance to 37%e¢ took place The ad- vance was well maintained throughout the session. A fair amount of business was transacted in oals at higher prices. The firmness in corn and a stronger cash market were also fovorable in retaining the slight strength that developed early. May started %c up from yesterday's latest quotation at 30%c, and s0ld up to 30%c. Toward the close the market advanced to 30%c and closed with sellers at from 30%c to 30%c. The late advance was caused principally by Car- rington-Hannah, who bid the market to 30%c when shorts were bidding freely. The provision market was firmer at the opening, due to the receipts of only 16,000 hogs, whereas 21,000 had been the previous estimate. There was some further ad- vance following the gain at the opening, but packers showed a disposition to sell at the better prices. Wooton was among the more promiuent buyers of pork early in the day. Armour & Co., later on, were sellers of ribs to a moderate extent, and Beasley was a buyer for the Cudahy Packing company, it ‘was thought. Estimated receipts of hog: for tomorrow are 23,000 head. Pork was relatively firmer than lard and ribs. In lard there a slight pressure to sell, as the market was coming to a close for the day, and all previous advance and 2%c be- sides was lost. Pork, after gaining 15c, closed with the modest advance of Ge, and ribs, after a rise of T%c, left oft at yester- day’s closing for May. Bstimated receipts for tomorrow: Wheat, cars; corn, 160 cars; oats, 150 cars; hoge, 23,000 head. The leading futures ranged as follow. With the exception of a slight movement in Burlington & Quincy and St. Paul, the trading in the rest of the list was sluggish and the sales of all com- bined did not equal the tramsactions in Sugar. At the opening Sugar declined % per cent and then rose % per cent, but before 11 o'clock a well defined selling movement in the shares had been inaugurated, which sent prices down rapidly until $8% per cent was touched shortly after 1 o'clock, making a decline of 4% per cent from the closing figures of yesterday. A large selling order. executed through “thq brokers of a well known bear operator, started the downward again | movement and led to the belief that the ; Juiy, | SuBar pool was liquidating necessarily. This "' | caused a rush to sell on the part of many holders not in the clique. There was evi- dence of strong buying, which caused a re- covery of 214 per cent, but in the final deal- ings, theselling was resumed and a reaction i1 ot 1% per cent’ was made, the closing being at a decline of 3% per cent on the day, the preferred stock receding 1 per cent. The gen- eral market opened firm at an ad- vance of % to 3% per cent. The fluctuations, except In some of the specialties, were confined to very narrow lim- 1ts up to noon, but Chicago & Alton rose 2 per cent and Edison declined % per cent Later in the day speculation took on a firmer tone and the best buying of the day was seen, which sent up prices from % to 1% per cent, Burlington, Western Union, Baltimore & Oblo gnd Oregon Improvement leading the upward “movement, The higher range of values Induced renlizations of profits and in the final dealings a reaction of from % to % per cent in the general list took place, th market closing easy. The rallway mis. cellaneous bond market was strong through- out the day The Evening Post probability is that the Sugar pool, whose sales caused the single break in today's market, were based solely and simply on the removal of the senate tarift bill into open day. The two days’ supply foots up about Co | 2,100 heavier than for Monday and Tuesday | 2 215 udahy Paoiiiig U of last week a ttle and 1,000 heavier as 3 T to sheep. In hogs there has been a falling BilipeaRor. & Doger oft of over 3,500 head i With twice as many cattle on sale here a week ago and rather discouraging re- ports from Chicago, sellers found it fmpos- sible to sustain prices, escept, perhaps, on the fat medium welght steers suitable for shipping. There was a very good inquiry from speculative shippers for steers with welght, fat and finish, but the demand from local houses was rather different. Most salesmen who did not happen to have so thing that shippers wanted were willing to take off 10c from Monday's prices, and on this basis most of the trading was done. Holders of the commonest lighter grades found it dificult to work them off at all, even at prices fully a dime lower, and in many cases more.
