Domestic soap breaks hard water. Check K There are a score or thereabouts of boys 1lving near the transfer who owe their lives at this time to the fact that they were not born to die by their own foolishness. Com- plaints have been made frequently of lato that they were in the habit of jumping on and off railway trains with a recklessness that made stout-hearted railroaders tremble at times for their safety. Saturday night ne of them, who had been stealing a rido on the Northwestern passenger train, jumped off just after the train had left the loca) depot. A train man who was watehing him aw him roll over after striking the ground and come within an inch of going under the wheels. But luck was with him, and, after picking himself up, he threw the rallroad man an_expressive jesture with his thumb against his nose and took his position to bo ready to cateh hold of the next train that came along. f Scanlan has decided that this prac. hall be stopped if the police can do ft, ued an order yesterday to all his pa- trolmen to arrest any boy who should b found jumping on or off trains while in motion. There is a city ordinance against it and Judge McGee will probably have a chance to use his judicial spanker unless the young Americas reform of their own free will. The same rule is to apply to the motor trains. Saturday night a couple ot boys boarded the rear platform of an Omaha train while the conductor was collecting fares In the smoker. They set the car to rocking up and down, and the first thing they or any one else knew they had rocked the fore trucks off tho track. By the time the conductor reached the platform whera they had been standing the culprits were far away. LIBERTY OR DEATH, iling to Break Outof Jail William Brown Swallows Pounded Window Glass, That William Brown is not chasing the jabberwock and the bandersnatch in the appy lunting grounds at this moment is not due to any neglect on his part, but to the fact of his possessing a digestion that is proof against pounded window glass, Wil llam has been in jail for six months for shooting a colored man named Harvey Washington, and a couple of weeks ago he had his trial before Judge Smith and was found guilty. With a term of perhaps ten ars in the penitentlary staring him in the face he determined that life was not worth living and he courted death, All Sunday afternoon the prisoners at the county jail were uncommonly noisy and Sherift Hazen suspected that something was in the wind. About 8 o'clock in the evening he heard seviral hard thumps from the interior of th: jail and ran outside the jail and looked in at one of the windows to se what was the cause. Some of the prisoners who had been stationed at the windows to wateh gave the alarm to their comrades and the thumping stopped. An investigation that Brown, Wilson, “the overcoat thisf, and Kild, the Beno burglar, had broken in pleces a heavy wooden bench and were using the two-inch plank which had formed the seat, as a battering ram. T had already broken out two of the chilled steel bars separating the cells fi the rear corridor, and were at work when discovered trying to break the bars over th outside window. A few minutes more and they would have accomplished their purpose and a part, it not all, the prisoners would have been at liberty, As soon as it was discovered the prisoners were all hustled into their cells, Brown belng put in with a man named Scott. Some time during the night Brown, having obtained possession of a razor used by the prisoners gave himself a slash across the left wrist penetrating the flesh to the bone. He evi dently intended to hit the main artery, but he missed it about kalf an inch and the wound stopped bleeding after a time of its own' accord. His cell mate found out what he had done ecarly yesterday morning and told the failer. After Brown found that he was still on earth he picked up a handful of pounded window glass and swallowed it as he would a handful of sugar City Physiclan Macrae was called and he gave him some medicine which was int 1 to prevent the window glass from holes in the Interior of his anatomy Brown took the first dose of the medicine he ventured the remark that he wished it was 50 much strychnine. “I'd rather go to h—I than to the pen for ten years,” he remarked The opiutons of physiclans who have been consulted iu that the dose of powdered glass will very likely be the means of closing up the somewhat remarkable career of Brown Wh money this year. People Persist in to County Treasurer Ree The mail received by County Treas Reed at this time of year is not only tremely heavy, but in some cases extremely amusing. Many property owners evidently have a high idea of Mr. Reed's capabilities, for they take it for granted he can by some special gift of intuition divine what Is in thefr thoughts, but not on paper. Some simply inquire what their taxes are, suppos- ing, of course, that so great and good a man as Reed knows just where their property is located and of what it consists. Others do not take the trouble to sign their name or give their postoffice address, for of course Reed knows all about it. If not, what is he there for? So numerous have such omissions been of late that the envelopes are preserved with religlous care, that at least the postoffice where such a letter was mailed may be deciphered from the stamp Sometimes even this hint of identifica- tion s too obscure to be of avail.
