COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Thers Was Bull Nows in the Wheat Mar- ket Yosterday. THAT CEREAL SUZPRISED MANY PEOPLE Corn Was Very Dull, but the Price Rather Favored the Bulls In the Forenoon, the Tendency the Other Wiy Later, 2. Ciicago, Jan. 22.—There was bull news in the wheat market today of the kind which usually excites the usual supporters of that sido to the be 10 do their worst. They wer to do battie on the danger now threatening the next crop. Tho bears stood paton their old and well-tried reli- ance, on the much worn text, “Sufticient unto the day is the evil thereof.” Bull news affecting next season’s crop was ineffectual as against an 80,000,000-bu. visible supply. Compared with Saturday’s closing price there was a decline of fc. sorn suffered from a 2,500,000-bu, increase 1n the visible supply and declined Xe. Provisions were strong and bigher on lighter receipts of hogs than had been looked for. Wheat surprised all people at the opening by the strength it displayed. Not that thore was anything in the early news of a bearish character, for quite the contrary was the case, but there has been a settled conviction among a large contingent of the speculative operators that whost was dead, but the signs of life it gave this morning raised a protest. Higher cables and predictions of a cold were the strong fouture: the session. The opening was from k¢ to 3 higher than Saturday’s figures, and after olding fairly steady for a while became weak, and prices declined from e to J¢ frum the top fizu ched, then rile quict. and the closing was about 3¢ lower than on Satnrday. May opened at 6514¢, and declined irregularly to (4 The corn market was v dull, but the price rather favored the bulls in the fore- noon, with the tendency in the other di tion later in the session. The receipts were less than tho estimuates, but the increase in the visible supply was heavier than was satisfactory to holders. Business was 7ery dull, with ten-minute inter between wrades in the middle of the session. May sold sparingly at 883c and graaually de- clined, closing at 381¢c, Business in oats was quiet and confined almost entively to local dealers, There was not much disposition on the part of holders to sell, and the tendency to buy was even smaller, Prices opened firm and sold off in sympathy with the larger markets. At she close the low prices of the day were made. May sold from 80'g@30'5c down to 29 Jo, which shows a decline of from 14¢ to 350 since Saturday. I'he provision market was sustained at an advance over Saturday’s closing prices. There were reactions in the course of the duy's advance, but there was always a BLron nd felt under the murket on its wenk spots. The days receipts of nogs wero only 24,000 head, instead of about 84,000 or 85,000 head, us expected, and the price at the yards was quoted from 10c to 20¢ higher. That was the reason given for the strength in the provision market. The estimated receipts of hogs for tomor- row are only 20,000 head, and that gave ad- ditional strength to the products. May pork was the article ov which speculators fouzht with much activity, closing 25¢ higher than Saturday. New Your, Jan. 22.—The feature of toaay’s stock market was the speculation in Sugar shares, which were very actively teaded in. A solling movement was orgun- ized at the opening of business, based on the belief that the tariff debute in the house today would demonstrate that the sugar re- finers had little to hope for inthe way of protection. The first price made showed a ak of 21{ per cont in Sugar preferved and 15 per cent i the common, followed by a further decline of }§ per cent in the latter. Insiders then began to buy and a regovery of 3{ per cent was made in the proferred and 14 per cent in the common, which Induced a fresh drive on the part of the short interest especially airccted against the common, which receded 11 per cent, the preferred reacting ¢ per cent, 'he debate in con- gress uot taking the turn anticipated, being devoted mainly to the bounty question, the bears grew frightened and began to cover their purchases. At the stavt professional scllers were both most numcrous and most vociferous. London helped in the sales, although today's foreign selling chiefly originated, doubtless, in New York. Senator Tabor was always a great theater-goer and he de- cided to give Leadvile a great play house. So he erected a then- ter on Harrison avenue and ordered the interior artistically painted and deco- rated by some of the best manivuiators of the brush in the conutry.
