a8 UHI.\IIiR(l:\L AND FINANCIAL Wheat Advanced One Uent on Reports of a Bond Lssve, 1T HAD PAEVIOUSLY SUFFERED A DECLINE Corn Recelved & Denl of Attention Farly, but Later the Market Was in a Weak Condition te the Close. ood Jan. 15.—On a report that the y of the ireasury had concluded to Issue §75,000.000 in bonds wheat advanced lc today. It had previously suffered a marked decline, however, on big Indian shipments, lower liberal reccipts and tho 1n- creased visible supply, and closing prices changed from Saturday's close. May corn is io May 4e lower and provisions siightly higher ali around t started out weak, with May !¢ and continued dow ard, Cnicaco, secrets cables. lower cables, liberal shipments from India aud only » small decrease in the quantity of wheat and flour on oce Besides the visible supply report posiings indicated increase, whiloopera- tors had calculated upon a decrease, and liberal receipts wera reported from the northwest, Butagood demand developed shorts became anxious to cover and a rapid ndvance followed. Besides the report about a bond issue thero was also a report that the crop of the Argentine had almost been ruined with drouth. ‘Ihe buying as prices ad yanced was liberal and May closed but 4¢ from the top figurcs of the day Corn ived a good deal of attention early, but later the market was in a weak condition and the ¢losing was very weak. Operations were almost exclusively local, one of the principal features being the un loading of a largo long lot held by Captain Phitlips, estimated at 1,000,000 bu. This and the free movement, the large increase in the visible supply and general decline in all the surrounding pits, created o great solling pressure. ‘1he cash mar<et was dull and heavy. The report of an Argentinu drouth caused a reaction, and May closed midway between the top and bottom figures of tho day Inoats the free selling by longs early, combined with the decline in other grains, caused weik but better buying and the advance in wheat produced a reaction later, and the close was steady, with May midway between the top and bottom figures of the session. Provisions opened wealk and lowor on ar- rival of live hogs largely in excess of the estimates, but on lizht offerings there was an improvement, which was also contributed to by the support accorded to the market by Arniour & Co. The feature of the day was the purchase of 1,000,000 Ibs. of May ribs by a prominent commission house and this im- parted renewed strongth, with the closing near the outside prices of the day. Com- ared with last night May pork is 12}¢c higher, May lard be higher and May ribs 6¢ higher. New Yok, Jan. 15.—The week opened on the Stock exchange with a firm tone in speculation in harmony with the strength of American sceurities in London and in re- spouse to purchases for the home and foreign accounts. After the“opening improvement whe market sagged off somewhav by reason of the dullness into which the tradmng lapsed rather than from any great pressure to sell, and except in some of the specialties there was very little movement m the list until the afternoon. A movement to cover short contracts was developed shortly after noon, which grew in strength as the day advanced and which was supplemented in the late dealings by purcnases for the long account. A factor in the situation was the very gencral belief that the conditions of the Umnited States treasury demands immediate relief, and_that if cougress does not rise to the occasion Secretary Carlisle will be forced to issue bonds under the existing law. The secretary’s lotter to Chaivman Voorhees of the senate finance committee, made pub- lic during tho afteruoon, confirmed th! view, and as a government bond issue is looked upon as a bull point the upward movement received new impetus. Among the local influences at work was the an- nouncement that the New York bond- holders’ committee of the Reading company had assented to the reerganization scheme, which was accepted as insuring its final adoption, and that at anot far distant dato. Reading 'stock and bonds were materially strengthened by this report and recorded substantial advances.
