New Yorg, Jan. b.—R. Dun & Co.’s weekly roview of trade will say: It is ques- tionable whether the working force in the great industrics has inereased as yot, though ubout the first of the year considerable in- crease was expected. The number of mills starting and stopping work is about the same. Sales of woul for the week amount to only 2,404,500 pounds, against 4,453,200 for the corresponding week last year, and since May 1 the decrease has been 40.6 per cent. Prices are somewhat weaker and few report satisfactory orders, Prices of cotton goods are further reduced to en- courage purchasers, Most of the shoo shops are moderately employed and the decrease in shipments for the week is 17 per cent, against 20 per cent far the last seven months of 1803, Still lower prices are recorded ip iron and steel, both at Phila- delphia and Pittsburg, without increase in volume of business. It is believed that the output of pig, though 40 per cent loss than year ago, exeecds the present consumption The volume of business represented by exchangoes outside of New York is 100.2 per cent less than for the same week last year. Regarding the extent of decrease in various branches of business during the lust half of 1803, actual sales have been reported from 1,175 houses or companies, aggreating $213,- 409,624 this year, against $304,460,103 in the same montlis last year, a decrcase of 20.7 per cent, Textile Manufactures, In the textile manufactures the decrease is 41 per cent, over 47 per cent in all woolens, 43 per cent_in silk, and37.1 per cent in cot- ton manufactures, 20.2 per cent in hosiery and 25.8 in mixed toxtiles, In dry goods the sales decreased only 10.2 per cent, stocks previousiy held having been much reduced, and the reporied decrease in sales of clothing is only 123 ver cent; in iron and steel manufactures the decrease is 39.8 per cent; in hardware only 185 per cent; in boots and shoes manufactures the decrease is 16.6 per cent, but in the retail trade only 1L1 per cent. The decrease in furniture is 26,1, jowelry 245 per cent, and in sales of hats onl 1 It is interesting and ercouraging that sales of groceries ave sslightly than last year, though a little less at the east and west, but greater at the south. The fact that in most branches the decrease appears smoller at the west than at the cast, and smaller at the south than at the wost, 1s one curious result of this ndvel investigation. Some explanations ave suggested elsewhere, Failures of the Year. The final classified returns of failuves for 1803 are not yet comyiete, but the reports received from the latter part of December swelled the aggregate of commercial ities 10 338,403,461, of which $167,- 545,08 are of 'manufacturing railures, $123,716,905 of trading failures and $47,220,516 of other concerns. Complate returns will be given, it is hoped, next week. For the past week the failures reported have been 511 in the United States againsy 52 1 year, and forty-one in Ganada against seventeen last year. The classified ‘liabilities in failures reported for the week pnding December 28 amount to 5,009,840, jof which 2235814 were in manufacturing. and §2,703,919 in trading failur: Deferred returns also swell the lisbilities for ¥he previous week to 9,08 dallure: S A CLEARING HOUSE FIGURES, Eiidstreet’s Compilation of the Business of the Banks of the Country. Children Cry for Pitcher's Castoria. Children Cry for Pitcher’s Castorla. communicato portion of the to speculation, Tho latter week has, howevoer, witnesse achango for tho bettor, with a marked recovery in stock vrices and a slight, though " sufficiently distinct rovival of hope fulness. Fears of disasters of considerable importance seem to have beon the oceasion for tho weakness and despondency which accompanied the turn of the year, and the fact that tho troubles which were supposed o be impending turned out to be really in significant in character furnisned the basis of subsequent improvement. Trade has been, and fnues to be, almost on- tirely professional, outside speculatlon being as narrow as ever, while the usual demand for investment of January income 1s notice- ably absent. The improvement of the past three days may, however, have boen somewhat assisted by a reflection of courage on the part of the investors, the strest being couvinced that the plethora of money, aud accordiagly low average of values, caunot fail to create a demand for stocks on the part of such interests. In addition to this, speculative sentiment appears to be in fluenced more or less by the belief that rai road earnings have roached thefr minimum, and t improvement in that respect, as well as in general business, cannot be longer delayed and that the market 1s prepared to discount any manifestations of this char- acter, however slight. VOLUME SOMEWHAT SMALLER. Small Mall Orders the Feature of the Wholaxale Trade. NEw Yonx, Jan. 5.—Bradstreev's will say General trade throughout the country has been somowhat smallor than last week, an indication of its character veing found in a report from Chicago that small mail orders constitute tho bulk of the gwholesalo pusi- ness. Stocktaking is also n feature, but the return of commorcial travelers to the rond is reported from nearly all points Prices for iron and steel are declared to have been still further shaded in castern centers since the boginning of the year and while there has been no further depression in prices, concessions are to be obtiined to permit of work in industrial lines in which there is much industry more than twice as many mills having started up in the week as have shut down, bit lower wages in all in- dustrial lines continug very numorous iu_cs tablishments which remain at work Woolen mills are doing a hand-to-mouth business on orders and interest in the cot- ton market is centered in receipts, which have begun to fall off rapidly, although still ahead of last year. The low cotton crop estimates call for u further shrin of r ceints Eastern dry goods jobbers are preparing for spring movement by ordering “supplies, while agents have begun to zet goods for- ward. Ihe feature at Chicago has been the heavy decrease of bank deposits and note- worthy purchases of bonds. mdition in Dry Goods. NEw Yonx, Jan. 5.—The action of the dry goods market hardly justifies expecta- tions, much loss hope. The general moy ment is slow and uneven. Mail orders while quite numerous, fail to cail forth the round lots noeded to make the volume of business that should be in progress at this timo of the year. All departments of the cotton goods market show a pathetic condition. Foreien dry goods rulo dull and barely steady. The jobbing trade shows moderato activit, et e The No 9 Wheeler & Witson with its_ro tary movement, is the lightest running machine in the market, and is unequalled for speed, durability and_quality of work. Mr. Heartz is the exceutive head of 40,000° bricklayers in this country and Canada. “I'ne workingmen throughout tho land have realized the fact that the only way to secure legislation favorable to theirinterests is to elect men to office from their own ranks,” he continued. *‘There has been too much devotion to party principlesin the past and not sufficient fealty to labor ivterests. Every candidate is the professed friend of the workingman before election, but they forget him as soon as the votes are counted. Such frequent cases of misplaced confidenco has disgusted wage oarners and they propose to adopt another plan. Lawyors elected 1o legislatures invariably work for corporation interests and ignore the voice of organized labor. In the past the great trouble in labor circles has been potty jealousies and lack of solidity of the labor vote, but 1 think tho present condition of the toiling masses has brought them to theirsensesand obliterated all po- litical lines in a universal demana for eman- cipation from monopoly dictaticn. 1 would not be surprised to see all the labor organ- izations feaerated under oue banuer for true iabor interests at the polls and clsewhere. The Knights of Labor will eveutually be consolidated with the American Foderation of Labor, as they will be too weak, numeri- cally speaking, in a few years, to stand alone. “Ihe cities throughout the country arc overcrowded with uile men, who are the worst sufferers of the present hard time This 18 4 poor WAN's panic in_ cvery sense ot the word. The west wus the tirst to feel the depression, and labor was the first to suffer. The result v that thousanas of men out of work, went east in search of employ- ment that dia nov watevialize. The building trades suffered more than any other class from the depression. Police judges in many cities are sentencing unfor- tunate idle workingmen for vagrancy, thus adding to the n ised by pauperized labor.” “Ihe aay of strikes is over,” concluded Mr., Heartz in dwelling upon the subject of capital and labor.
