Yonr, Jan. 3.—At the opening of business on the Stock exchange today a de- termined effort wus made by shorts to de- press stocks, which was partially successfut in the early dealngs. The bear campaign was not, however, of long duration, for the conditions did not seem to be eutirely favor- able, and many shorts turned tail and began to cover when they found that the market was strongly supported. Yesterday's disquieting rumors were not revived and the air seemed to be cleared when it was announced that the Holland Trust company the financial rumors yesterday reo- ferred to as going into liquidation had assets to meet all its oblig tions. The weakuess of the London market for American sccurities was a factor i the early depression here, and there were sales of St. Paul for the London account, which, however, decline in these shares of only 1y at, which was s00n recovered, and the final sales were 1y per cent above yesterday's close. Sugar was most actively traded in, and after an early advance of '¢ per cent wus attacked and forced down 13 per cent, but the stock was strongly supported from the inside and quickly rallicd on good buying, a gooa deal of which was covoring of shorts' contracts, and udvanced 81 per cent, of which only 1 ut was lost at the close. Sugar pre- pse 11 per cont. Western Union declined ¥ per cent in the opening trading and then {oolc & sharp upward turn on hovy purchases, said to have been for the account of an inside pool. The advancing low point of the morning was 25 per cent and the close was at the highest point of the day. New England rose ' per cent in the early dealing, then rose 1'¢ per cent, the late buy- g belng cr 110 tho New' Haven intor est. ‘I'ne stock closed at u reaction of i per cent. The general muarket was weak at the opening and rencted o fraction in the opening trad- ing, but quickly rallied and an advance of g t0 1% per cent was recorded, the latter in Reading Before 11 o'clock o reaction of 'y t0 1 percent had been effected, which was more than, recovered within the following hilf hour. ‘Ihen came u slight reactionnry wovement, but the markec swuug into the afternoon with @ steady guit, whici g New with an oo prices the day in the final deal ings. The market closed strong atan ad vance of 1§ to 8 per cent compared with yesterday's final wilep.
