Ihe placing in the hands of receivers late on Saturday of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe railroad was one of the several features which depressed the speculation on the Stock exchange today, more purticularly the dealings in the Atchi- son securities. Auotherdepressing influence was the uncertainty of the situation in gard to New England. The payment of the January disbursement is yet in doubt, and there were uncomfortable rumors that the control of the road will in the near future, if it nas not already, be taken out of the hands of the present management. There were free sellng movements in both stocks. Atchison, after a drop of 19 per cent at the opeung, rose 1 per cent on burchases of 6,600 sharés. Then the selling bewan ancw ana the improvement was entirely lost. During the rest of the the stock held firm, fluctuating between 13 and 13%; and closing av 133, which was only 1 per cent below the closing price of Saturday. The trend of sentiment seews to be that the re- ceivership will not be of very long duration, and that the interest of the stockholders will be carefully looked after. The London Stock exchange being closed today possibly m ited heavier selliog, as London is a larger holder of Atchison sccurities. 1ne announcement that the St. Paul earnings for the third week in December showed a decrease of over $173,000, served to de- preciate the value of the shares, large blocks of which changed nands, The other granger shares were also heavy, the declines from Saturday being 11§ per cent in North west, 1% per cent in Rock Island, 13/ per cent in Chicago, Burlington & Quincy, and ¢ per cent in St. Paul & Omah Sugar opened Iy per cent down, cent and receded 5 per cent ports that 4 moditication of the was in | s which would assist the ar s good buyers came into the arket whose purchases sent Sugar shares up 8 per cent. Realization of profits and some short sules caused a reaction of 1% per cent during the afterncon, with a final rally of # per cent, the gam of the day being 1% per cent. The declines, compared with Sat- urday's e, range from 'y 0 8 per cent. market closed weak. The Post says: London had a holiday again today und foreign operations hardly figured in the market. For local account, however, there was rather heavy selling from the start. The Atchison's confession of insolveny, made late on Saturday, was a feature. The stock at the opening nearly 2 points and the bonds # powts on active selling. Elsewhere the pressure of stock for sale bore chiefiy ou the granger shares, and here the movement was as- sisted by the decrease of $173.458 in the St. Paul’s gross earnings for the third week of December. These figures are, however, far less signiticant than the report of the No- vember net receipts, now due in two or three days. The stock market was irregular.
